New Cell Phone Tactics

Posted by geeknews at 9:51 AM on December 3, 2003

How many of you have moved to a new cell phone carrier now that number portability allows you to take your old number with you? Well I did some investigating and I am not real happy with the change in tactics by cell phone companies. They are now offering as standard to get good plans a minimum of a 2 year contract. Obviously this is having an affect as those that are in long term 2 year contracts now are totally screwed and will be stuck on that carrier for a very long time.

I have a unique situation where I am expecting a job change which could take me overseas and if that happens I do not want to be locked down in a new contract and have to deal with a possible penalty when and if I need to cancel. My entire point on this is consumers need to vocalize to these mobile phone companies that they are not going to accept these tactics. [ZDNet]

Yeah, the whole you-can-take-your-number-with-you hoopla is pointless and useless when most people are stuck in contracts. My contract isn’t up until July of ’04. So much for number portability for me.
