Are you selling used hard-drives on the Internet?

Posted by geeknews at 11:46 PM on March 23, 2004

I have covered this subject once but it seems the subject is in the news again.

First of all if you answered that question yes. Then I am only going to say one thing (actually not) your being pretty stupid. Ever wonder why the US Government smashes hard-drives before they send older outdated models to the their government liquidation warehouses.

Seems people are still selling their old hard-drives on the Internet and people are still gleaning a significant amount of data from them. Take this friendly advise take a hammer to those old hard-drives have fun doing it and don’t try to make a quick buck unless you know what your doing to completely wipe the info.

I totally agree. Selling on a harddrive is very dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing to securly wipe it (if that can really do done). Just smash it up, the price of harddrives are so low now you are only going to make a few quid from it and most people don’t realise that a format doesn’t mean people can’t get stuff back! I am surprised I have not seen stories of people being arrested for owning illegal material from harddrives they have sold on eBay, etc. Actually saying that I wonder about the legal issues that would arise if the police bought a harddrive from someone they suspected to be involved with child porn and then used it to recover information such as images, etc to use as evidence?
