Cell Phone sales in Japan Slump (No Kidding)

Posted by geeknews at 2:31 AM on April 14, 2004

I had to chuckle when I read this. While at my wife’s families home in Okinawa last week I noticed that every adult above the age of 13 had a cell phone. I kinda laughed as we went through the process of me updating my Japanese Cell phone with all of their numbers.

When a part-time visitor to Japan has his own cell phone and quite literally everyone I know in Japan has one the decline in sales does not surprise me. Everyone Already has a Phone. Although my phone is a pay as you go type like they have here in the US, my sister-in-law who works for “AU” (One of the biggest cell companies in Japan) re-charges the phone if I am gone for more than 90 days to keep the phone from expiring and I pick it up when I am in town. By sending text messages 90% of the time I reduce my annual cost to less than $100.00 better than not having a phone in one of the most connected countries in the world. ][DesignTechnica]
