Microsoft site slammed when rushed for updates

Posted by geeknews at 2:33 AM on April 15, 2004

I was quite shocked when I read that Microsoft’s servers where swamped by the number of people downloading updates for their computers. I personally noticed the slow download times last night when I tried to patch 7 machines all at the same time. They said they saw 50 gigs per second being downloaded. That made me shudder as we would have burned through our monthly alloted bandwidth in 2 seconds if we had been hit with such a barrage.

People wonder why the video blog has not taken off and one of the reasons is most of us could not afford to host streaming video feeds. [ZDNet]

I’m solving my bandwidth problems. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I ordered T1 to my house from Birch Telecom. :) $399/mo gives me unlimited 1.544mbps bandwidth. Pricey? Not really considering the money I’ll save with not having to pay 3rd parties to host my websites. =)
