Students of all ages need to know this...

There are absolutely NO terms and conditions which allow for (any) people of authority (teachers included) to violate a persons rights - privacy being one of them. Those teachers are liable, and CAN be held against charges.

Stand up for yourself and make a statement - the data on your phone is personal, and can only be viewed by others with the permission of the owner, or the parents (if owner is a minor and refuses permission, or if minor is charged with a crime, not the case here)

The people involved need to be fined at least...A principal is not a judge, or a cop...and has no business reviewing anyones data, unless it's stored on a school-owned resource.

I dare someone to violate my sons privacy - they will be made an example of.

Wow, that's crazy that they just read through their txt messages and called people in the phonebook like that. I would be getting some people fired and hiring a lawyer. That's a pretty bad privacy invasion. If that was me, I would have never given them my cell phone in the first place, they would have to litterally pry it from me.
