Project: mini PC

Posted by geeknews at 3:39 AM on February 2, 2005

Oh boy if the Mac Mini I bought doesn’t work out I guess I could convert it to a Windows PC and have it run in the same case. This is hilarious. [KevinRose.com]

PC mini in a Mac mini case

This is an abomination. But I am not sure which group, the Windows Regime or the Mac Mob, will consider it the greater heresy.

The problem with this project is that he has ended up with with a system with signifiicantly less performance and capability than the stock mac mini. Although a G4 won’t clock as high as an x86 chip it is more efficient, generally considered from most benchmarks to be 1.5x a p4 performance. So a 1.25 GHz G4 would be comparable to about a 1.9 GHz p4. On the other hand the Via chips are the opposite. A 1 Ghz Via cpu is about on a par with a 750Mhz p3 or athlon. Also he was no longer able to fit the cd drive in.

So effictively he has cobbled up a machine that will give him maybe half the performance he had to begin with and less functionality. The only possible benefit to this project might be a little less power consumption, which is the one benefit of the Via CPU.

Fun to show that it can be done but there is definitely no reason to ever reproduce it, at least with the hardware that he used. Now if some company could be build a 6in square board that could hold A64/3000 and a radeon 9600/128MB that would be a worthwile project.

You should keep us up to date on how you like your Mac Mini. I am a PC user thinking about adding a Mac Mini to my network.

Keep up the good work on your podcast too. I am always looking forward to it.
