All Not Well in RSS Advertising Land?

[Updated #2] Following my post about Dick Costolo of Feedburner publicly stating that RSS feeds with ads are not losing subscribers, based on the many thousands of feeds Feedburner manages, several publishers stated just the oposite.

Hi folks, I just wanted to quickly note that what we try to provide for publishers is a sense of circulation, of the total number of subscribers and subscriber trends for a publisher. This seems to us like a good balance between publisher stats and subscriber anonymity, which you always get in RSS right now (unless you create one feed per subscriber, which we never do).
Regarding feed updates, we carefully monitor this, and I think we've done a great job of making sure feeds are updated at least every 30 minutes, and then right away if we're pinged by the publisher. The one issue we're aware of are those cases in which the source feed becomes invalid, and then later becomes valid but then doesn't mark the feed as updated. Since we use if-mod-since to check whether a feed's been updated, that would cause an issue. We will start providing additional tools that help notify publishers when the source feed is invalid, so that we can be more proactive about that.
We are wide open to suggestions about the best way to provide ad services to publishers in a way that balances the subscriber desire for a simple and consistent experience. Thanks.
