Why should I pay someone to have this service. It is utterly ridiculous to put so much faith in one company. I hope they do well but what happened if there site went dark today and never came back what would the impact be.

I pay for hosting, a domain and that is the extent of my monthly cost to maintain this blog why do I want to pay someone a sum of money for something that should be built into the basic application and does not cost me another penny.

It's your company and your customers decision to proceed how they should but you should at least educate people on the cautions that should be associated with using a third party service for the lifeblood of ones rss feed.

www.yourdomain.com/index.xml or
feeds.feedburner.com/yourwebsitename?

What about:

feeds.yourdomain.com/sitename ? Feedburner supports you using your own domain name with their service. And you've oversimplified the issue. For example: I have hundreds of subscribers who use Bloglines, but Bloglines (intelligently) only requests my feed once. So my stats would show one subscriber where there's hundreds.

Feedburner's built a business on handling this one area of functionality really well -- what's wrong with having everyone focus on the task they do best?
