I understand the concern here, but if you didn't want it linked in any way, shape or form, you should not put it on line for FREE.

There is a downside, as seen above, but just relax for a bit; Marshall is a good person and they are on the road right now covering events for all of us that can not be there!

Yes it is a serious issue; just as serious as copyright violation is. Trust me, I'm an ex-musician that has recorded works out, I know how important copyright violation is!

For now - take the fact is at stands --- You may now get new fans to your work. So don't turn them off by ranting too much. :)

Exposure is great, and the internet in general is a fantastic place to do that. Promote, market, expose, spread and preach what you believe in.

Remember - Good Press or Bad Press is all the same. It's still PRESS. Just as that PRESS is PRESS; good or bad --- this is ALL (SplashCast) still is even more exposure for YOUR WORK.

Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the ride we are all on.

We over at podcast.com do as much as we can, based upon the info in the feed to provide as much info as possible on the publisher with links.

If there was a need to provide a locally cached and normalized version for any reason, we would use the 'source' element in the RSS feed header to point to the originating feed.

They could be good things to have internally in a feed directory system, in order to reduce database hits - but you should never point to that publicly. Always point to the original source feed url.

I would say that by now, things like that are now an 'unwritten law' in this game ;)

I can't believe that we still have sites pulling this. This is NO DIFFERENT than you taping your favorite TV show, rebroadcasting it on a new station you start up, and making sure you have it listed in TV Guide and billboards all over town.

What part of intellectual property theft don't these bozos understand?

Todd...I have a call with Marshall tomorrow and will let you know. In addition to just hijacking the feed, if it is video, they download, transcode and host the video themselves. This is just as bad -- if not worse. I know that they have the best intentions...but this is not good.

A couple more notes to clarify where things are at now:

First, links back can be found in the player in the little blue "i" for info buttons at the top and bottom left hand side.

Second, the RSS feed you see when you click RSS button is the feed for the channel aggregating all the individual feeds in it. We'll be adding the original feed URL to that screen asap when we get home to Portland.

Let's keep talking!

Network2.tv has similar links but they do it right...

http://network2.tv/show/4952/

Got get 'em, Todd. I may not understand all of this, but I understand hijacking, and you are losing out by them not using your direct links. I don't see why they are not just fixing it, unless they are trying to fraudulently boost their OWN numbers for advertising purposes...

Like I said I have no issue with my show being listed in the directory, just get the RSS feeds pointed at my Feed and remove references to the hijacked feeds.

The aggregation of the data is not the issue, a lot of sites do that and it is something I support, as exposure is good so long as it attribution is their.

The feed manipulation is the real issue here. Replace their feed with mine and its no longer a issue.

Thanks for posting my comment Todd. We are certainly not going to ignore what anyone is saying. The team is on the road right now but we're engaging with these issues and communicating about them as much as we can. We'll keep the lines of communication open and hope that we can find a satisfactory solution for all.

I see that GeekNewsCentral has been added to our directory - we added a lot of feeds ourselves, but a user added yours. Do you want us to take it out or do you want to wait and see if we can find an amiable solution to these issues before doing so? Let me know, either in comments here or by email.

Thanks
Marshall

Wow Todd thats a tough one. Since they are linking to a 'feed' and not directly to your MP3 their use of your content to value their business is likely not a Creative Commons violation. That at the lowest level will be your double edged sword.

If their use of your content is ok under CCL then there isnt a lot technically you can do. Morally I dont think its right but legally I dunno. I understand the reasons for your anger since for you and a lot of others podcasting is a commercial endeavor.

It's an unfortunate side effect that when you make something written, recorded, or broadcast 'free' (as in speech) then others will take it and can take it and do with it as they wish.
