PodSpam the new Vile of the Podcast Space

Posted by geeknews at 12:53 PM on May 16, 2008

Recently we have begun to see a whole new marketing ploy made by those that have largely been running websites that try to sell you something that you supposedly cannot get anyplace else.

We have all seen these sites that will sell you the secrets of real estate, money markets, stock market etc etc etc. Well these sites are now not only using the old school templates that have been recycled for 10 years they are also creating media.

Usually the media is produced YouTube style and the person does his best to pitch his or her skills and tries to encourage you to visit their webpage which usually has a offer you cannot refuse.

Well now they are wrapping that content in a RSS feed and applying at podcasting sites to be listed. They are pretty easy to spot. The show title goes something like this. “Best Stock Market Advice” followed by a description that has a embedded URL and some other cheesy Google enhancing keywords.

They then produce in quick succession a number of infomercials with the hopes of getting some google love due to the syndication of that content. Well today we removed 166 shows from one of our properties that we felt were what I call PodSpamming.

We have permanently banned the RSS service mypodfeeds.com and trafficgeyser.net due to a high amount of PodSpam and hope that other podcasting service will follow our lead.

    Hey Todd,

Wanted to let you know that these guys have been hitting MANY different podcasting directories. Basically, they show up where ever there is any sort of community around the shows. My podcast is listed within an education related community and they were getting hit with 30+ spams a day.

It’s really not a good rap that they’re giving all of us bloggers/podcasters. Thanks for speaking out about it – maybe we can get some traction on it.

    Best,
    James

Yeah, I just read where this last week, we celebrated the birthday of Spam from the original Arpanet. Yeah, Happy Birthday spam….kidding. No one can respect a business that has that as their model for advertising. At least I hope not.
