Signal to Noise,

Posted by John Parie at 10:39 PM on April 30, 2009

This morning I received an e-mail that I had been chosen to join the Geek News Central Team. At first I was ecstatic to pickup a spot in a great Internet news source, but then I realized, my passive days of Internet surfing were gone.

In past career endeavors I managed a newspaper and worked as a journalist. I spent my down time like most trying to hone my craft and learn from others. A lot of that time was spent reading online post from sites that I respected and enjoyed visiting. I’ve spent the better part of the day trying to figure out what my first post on the site would be, after re-reading most the of the site’s history to make sure I wasn’t duplicating something that had already been discussed, I was at a lose.

I wanted to post on my social media sites, that I had finally gotten the opportunity I wanted since I had left the old media company I worked for, but I decided to hold out until I had published my first post.

After reading Geeknewscentral.com for hours on end I saw some posts that intrigued me, mainly around social media sites.

I currently earn my living as a private IT consultant. The first thing I do each morning is check my Email, iGoogle RSS Home Page, Facebook, and Twitter updates to see what posts I’ve missed since last time I’ve checked.

While each one has there purpose I think each one is invaluable to me in my day-to-day life.

Email – It is my direct connection to clients, press releases, and the occasionally long uncle who has left millions of dollars to me.

IGoogle – This is the place I read about the new from the different blog that I follow, most of them specific to one type of technology or another.

Facebook – This is where I catch up with past and current friends to see what is going on in their lives. By far this is the most rewarding of any place I visit, due to the mere fact that I know these people and to be able to reconnect with these people after many years and miles is the definition of the magic of the Internet.

Twitter (The Internet Stepchild) – While this is the most debated source of information on the Internet and the most static filled of them all, I find this the best place to find the most current news on the web. While the argument can be made that this is just a place for people to “sell” themselves as stars, I find that the benefit of using Twitter is all based on whom you follow. If you are following people in the “know” or people that care about technology then you are far more likely to get valuable pieces of information far quicker then the average person and a far lower signal to noise ratio then those that follow the Oprah-Shaq-JplusK combo.
My basic point is the Internet as whole is a tool where each thing is meant to fill a specific void and I don’t think that one tool will be perfect to meet the criteria of one person.

Again this is first post of hopefully mainly on this site, so please let me know what you think. I can be reached at jparie@gmail.com.

Why Twitter Gets More Airtime than it Deserves

Posted by Matthew Greensmith at 8:24 PM on April 30, 2009

I love an ironic post title!

Twitter is not something that has made any impact on my day-to-day tech life.  It just does not provide me with any appreciable value.  The signal to noise ratio is just too high for me, and what it does offer for me I can do through other means.  It seems that I am not alone in this regard with Nielsen today re-affirming their estimate that the drop-off rate for Twitter is around 60%.  This recount factored in the use of Twitter based applications and websites that might have been clouding the results.

So Twitter seems to be gaining a lot of new people to it, unsurprising given the buzz it receives, but is not providing enough value to keep them.  Despite this the pundtry seem to have a facination with the world changing ability of the platform.  I do not mean to be derisive of the technology, I am more interested in the disconnect.

The opinion I have come to is that the Twitter model offers specific value to the celebrity-fan relationship.  I am using ‘celebrity’ a bit broadly here to represent anybody who has extensive one to many communications with a regular audience.  In these relationships the fan has a greater interest in the individual activities of the celebrity, whereas the celebrity is more interested in the aggregate activities of their fans.  While new media might go some way to correcting this imbalance, is is not practical for most celebs to have that personal relationship with their fans.

Twitter becomes a method for a celebrity to approximate a more personal relationship with their fans.  They can offer more of themselves easily and get a relatively concise subset of what their fans wish to tell them at any period of time.  The fan gets a chance that the celebrity might actually reply to them and the 140 character limit prevents the whole thing from getting out of hand.

The information communicated in this medium is by no means only of a superficial or personal nature.  Having the stream of communication open also allows the celebrity to get information to the fans they might not get through other means.  Whether this is a spontaneous appearance, rallying them to an action/cause, directing their attention or correcting a false rumour/report.  This is why the appeal stretches to more types of people than would typically be covered by the term celebrity.

So if you are a Todd Cochrane, a Leo Laporte, a PUSA or an Oprah, there is a much greater value to Twitter than if you are a generic user of the product.  This value also exists, although to a much lesser extent, if you are a fan or interested observer of one of these people.  Which does suggest that to get money for their value, Twitter should charge for accounts that have high numbers of followers.

The people who get the most value out of Twitter are then precisely the same set of people that are most visible reporters of technology trends.  If they see much more value than the average user does it stands to reason that the focus they give the product will be higher than their audience would expect.

Do you think I am on, the money, on the right track, or way off base with this?

I am starting to see some very interesting uses for Twitter.  I won’t link to it as it is not child safe, but the No Agenda stream uses Twitter as a control mechanism.  News stories, requests and listener comments come in via Twitter and are automatically inserted into the stream.  I do feel though that Twitters value to most users is when it is coupled to some other communication method.  If messages can be direct, personal, narrow cast, or broadcast, Twitter is an option for broadcast.  Whether it has the strength to thrive with such a narrow focus remains to be seen.

Adobe: We’re Fixing Reader

Posted by susabelle at 9:35 AM on April 30, 2009

At least Adobe has apparently responded.  They are working on a patch for all versions of Adobe Acrobat and Reader, for Unix, Mac, and PC.  It should be released in the next month, and should close up the now-well-known security hole.  In the meantime, Adobe is suggesting disabling javascripting in both programs, which can be done through Preferences, under Edit.

After F-Secure released the sternest warning yet on Adobe (“stop using Adobe”), it is encouraging to see that Adobe is working diligently on a fix for this particular vulnerability, and including other vulnerabilities that it has since discovered.

The real trick, I think, is getting the public to buy into the fact that Adobe Reader needs regular updates, and Adobe needs to be sure the updates don’t take long long minutes to download and install, and that they are not interrupting other operations on a computer while they are doing it.  I often reject updates because they come up just as I’m opening  a document, which is all well and good, but then ties up my computer for the next five to eight minutes (or more) doing a download and install.  A cumbersome update is going to be ignored virtually every time.

Goodbye Geocities.

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 7:56 AM on April 27, 2009

Yahoo announced over the weekend that Geocities will be phased out. Started by a small company out of Beverly Hills (That’s where I wanna be – Gimmie Gimmie), it became a very popular free service. Yahoo saw the opportunity and in 1999, they snagged this internet portal up for 4.7 billion.

Ever since, Geocities has gone downhill.

Part of it was not Yahoo’s fault – Geocities still required you to know a little HTML. The page builder got better with time, but ultimately sites like MySpace and Facebook showed people you didn’t need to know that icky code to make a web page.

Still, Yahoo did to Geocities what it does to all the other items it acquired in the last 10 years – buy it, pat it on the back and say “Have a nice day at school. When you get home, the TV will be on and ready for you”.

Yahoo’s ideals of how to handle their business just completely confounds me. Why don’t they try to put this up for sale? I bet with the right management, this program could get a new life.

The demise date is not set. Only mention of “Mid-year”. Hey, guess what? We ARE in Mid-Year. Oh well, there’s only one thing left to say…

“Hey Hey Hey – Goodbye!”

Ustream.TV Blows it in their Latest Updates!

Posted by geeknews at 11:55 PM on April 24, 2009

Ustream.TV in an attempt to improve the interface for listeners and those of use using the service have caused a large number of content creators to cry out in protest of some of the changes.

During my Live event last night, all of the listeners where complaining about the new chat interface. In fact I could not participate in chat at all last night as the chat auto scroll was broken. Plus as part of the change I can no longer chat from the Broadcast Console it forces me to a separate web-page. This is problematic as I have 20+ tabs open on every show making it impossible to follow the chat.

2009-ustream4

The biggest issue I have with the changes is that when I am not streaming it is impossible for someone to watch my previous show from my video page here at Geek News Central. In order for people to watch an archived show they get driven back to the Ustream.TV website versus being able to watch here at Geek News Central. Plus the videos they are presented are the oldest versions. Which is really stupid.

2009-ustream2

One of the worst things is that visitors to my site no longer can quickly watch my previous episode which will result in lower revenues for both me and ustream as they cannot show any more ads to my viewers.

2009-ustream3

Another big issue is that Ustream is now promoting other shows that I do not approve of in my player window, whether I am live of off line on Geek News Central. This is a big issue why would I want to promote shows that I do not endorse!

2009-ustream

On the Ustream site on my once personalized show page they are promoting other shows as well, which is frustrating, because as I visited over 20 shows that Ustream.TV was promoting on my show page and non of those show pages were promoting my show in reverse. This is BAD BAD BAD BAD as these shows get free advertisements on my show page and I don’t get any return love.

Are Geeks coming to my site going to want to watch some an Owl Cam? How in the hell can that be a recommended show?

2009-ustream5

It is obvious that they are working very hard to keep people contained within the Ustream.TV website but they have effectively destroyed my ability to build my live show on my own website. Because the player on my dedicated video page does nothing but drive people away from my site and onto Ustream.TV website.

Gateway in the Dead Pool

Posted by susabelle at 1:23 PM on April 24, 2009

I’ve been watching this one for a while, but it appears that Gateway as a brand may be headed for the dead pool.  It’s not even putting up much of a fight, either.

In 2007, Gateway sold off its professional division to MCS, formerly Micron Computer.  This mean all small, medium, and large business, as well as education and government contracts, went with it.  That was all well and good until MCS started to fail, and is now in full bankruptcy receivership.  MSC began to spiral in mid-2008 and could not pull itself out.  They were delisted from the New York Stock Exchange by November, 2008, which pretty much sounded its death knell.

While all this was going on, Acer bought the Gateway brand, promising to keep operations as they were.  Gateway computers are on the market and still being sold, but no new models have been released recently, and it doesn’t appear that will change anytime soon.  Those buying Gateway from retailers should probably see no difference in sales and service at this point, but anyone using Gateway branded products in a business setting is pretty much out of luck when it comes to service and support.

We are primarily a Dell campus, but we do have a few Gateways, including my beloved, abused, and still fully functional Gateway M275 convertible notebook/tablet that is now about six years old and still used daily.  Up until December, we were still able to get the Gateways serviced under existing warranty; this past week we discovered that there is no longer support of any warrantied Gateway equipment.  Any service these machines will need will have to be paid for by us.

Buyer beware.  I wouldn’t buy a Gateway at this point, not even from a retailer.
