TV Habits When Traveling

Posted by susabelle at 8:44 AM on July 30, 2009

What are your television habits when you travel?  Do you take your television with you (Slingbox comes to mind)?  Do you bring extra cables so you can hook your laptop up to the hotel’s television and watch media through your laptop?  Or do you bring an even smaller device to do the same thing?

The bigger question:  how do you consume your media when you travel?

I do not watch too much television.  The local news, episodes of Clean House on the Style Network, and Cardinals’ Baseball.  None of these things, in general, are things I can get when I’m traveling, except through my laptop and the hotel’s Internet connection.  When I am gone for more than a day or two, I like to catch up on my hometown news just to be sure nothing horrific happened in my neighborhood.  I can do that by loading up one of the local television station’s websites, and watching their broadcast of the news live.  I can catch up on epsiodes of missed television shows by logging onto that show or network’s website.  The only thing I can’t get is my baseball, and I’m not going to die without my baseball.

I have been known to pack a couple DVD’s for a trip, or load them onto my laptop for viewing.  I have a video ipod, but watching a movie on that thing is not a great experience for my eyes, so watching through the laptop is preferred.  When traveling with the family, we usually pack the portable DVD players, which can then be easily hooked up to motel televisions.

Some hotels are getting into the act these days and providing easy ways for you to hook up your personal media to their in-room systems, including providing docks for media players and easy-t0-access video ports.   Most of these are higher-end or business hotels, which means the local Motel 6 isn’t going to have these kinds of amenities.  I would argue that maybe they should, to accommodate traveling families.  Along with free WiFi or Internet access, I would argue these should be standard accommodations these days.

How do you consume media when you are traveling?

DYMO LableWriter 450 Twin Turbo Review

Posted by geeknews at 12:41 AM on July 29, 2009

DYMO 450 Twin TurboOver the past 2-3 years I have reviewed other DYMO printers, and when the latest model showed up at my door the question in my mind is what’s different.

Like every product we review here, we really test it. For over a week the review unit has sat in place of my older DYMO Printer, the first thing I noticed is that it is much faster. Having a variety of labels here for the DYMO, I played around with various Label sizes to see if they had improved the feed mechanism. One of the challenges I have had in the past was switching out the label spools. They did not disappoint because it took less than 30 seconds to switch out a spool. The printer is thermal so it never needs ink which keeps the cost of ownership down.

The best part is that this unit had a dual print head. Perfect for having postage labels in one bin, and regular address labels in the other. One thing that my wife likes is that she can print address labels for boxes she is shipping to her family in Japan. One thing I noticed is that the software has been updated and it validates addresses for you as well. The unit handled all of the International label printing as well.

Overall very impressed, I did not think a product line like this could get better but the folks at DYMO did not disappoint. The DYMO LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo is faster then ever, and it is a product line that I use here at GNC. Check out the full line of DYMO Printers at Dymo.com

Disclosure: Review unit was provided to Geek News Central by DYMO for Review purposes. Companies are never guaranteed a positive review. All products reviewed at Geek News Central are put through a minimum of 3 days of real world usage. The above unit was used in a standard home office for over a week, views expressed by Todd @ Geek News Central are based on real experiences with the products we review.

Yahoo is Done Searching. Microsoft Gets Their Way (Sort of)

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 12:36 AM on July 29, 2009

bing yahoo

Well, it was a deal that was a year and a half in the making. Actually, it’s been longer than that – nonetheless, Microsoft has finally gotten what they want. While it still needs to have a final stamp of approval, it looks like Yahoo search will become Yahoo Search powered by Bing.

The real history is this: Back in 2005, Microsoft talked ‘Partnership’ with Yahoo to thwart the ever growing Google. That was during the Instant Messaging days – When it was announced that MSN Messenger and Yahoo IM would be able to talk to each other.

By May of 2007, Microsoft and Yahoo were in talks of an apparent $50 Billion dollar merger. While that didn’t happen, we started seeing the beginnings of the Mass Exodus of Yahoo. Employees such as Farzad Nazem – who was Yahoo’s CTO at the time – took retirement. That was followed by other key players in Yahoo’s stable.

However, the battle didn’t really start until Feb 3rd, 2008, when Steve Ballmer offered $41 Billion to take over the company. It was a long – drawn out battle that gave people like Carl Icahn a seat on Yahoo’s board and Jerry Yang the heave – ho as CEO. Since then, Yahoo has plummeted in stock price.

Carol Bartz took over as CEO in January 2009 with a renewed hope. However, the Yahoo name has been pretty stagnant until just a couple weeks ago when they revamped email. Closing services like Yahoo Music and Geocities helped Yahoo score a profit in Q2, but the search side had remained at a plateau.

Then along came Bing.

“I think actually Bing is a good product. ” Carl Bartz announces in a transcript. “It actually extends sort of the experimentation around search and how people use it instead of just thinking like a standard blue link.” She goes on with “…Microsoft should be given kudos for Bing.”

What is supposedly proposed is that Microsoft will take over the search engine side of things. Yahoo will continue with ad placement on the site. Yahoo is expected to get 110% of search ad deals until 2011, in which it will drop to 90%, according to Allthingsd.com.

The drama is expected to unfold in the next 24 hours as it is said to be a ‘done deal – with the formalities happening later today’. Right now, neither side is ready to comment.

Why I Don’t Like those ‘Who’s Online’ Toolbars

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 9:07 AM on July 28, 2009

Who's Online

It all started with Facebook. A little blue bar on the bottom saying who was online. I turned off the online chat. Then MySpace did it. Then YouTube did it.

I don’t mind that they have these little “Widgets” around the site. Still – You should really ASK me before assuming I want that option turned on. Especially if you add the bar.

It’s not that I don’t want to connect with friends. It’s not that I don’t want to be social. However, when I am deep in work, I really don’t want people messaging me at the wrong moment. Especially since some of these items create sounds – with no way to turn off.

Think about it. You are showing your Boss how to do something. You are on a GotoMeeting session showing off some websites that help with your brand. You get up on Facebook to show how that cool application will post to the social network site, when you get and IM “Dude – This girl does all kinda crazy http; // bit . ly / someurl”.

OK, maybe you as the masses might not be on that level yet, but you might in a couple years. I wasn’t there last year, but now I am doing more online meetings and PC requests than ever. I got off of IM’s like Yahoo and MSN Messanger because of this phenomenon; The ability to contact someone at anytime.

I did it because I have a little bit of ADHD. If I am engrossed in a project, someone might message me and we’ll get into a long back – and – forth conversation. In the meantime, I may loose focus on what I am doing. It’s not a multi-task issue. I multi-task all the time. Just now, I am working on remixing some music I recorded, adding to my own Podcast show notes and writing this article.

Maybe it’s because of the special attention – The conversation happens in real time as oppose to something I can write – then review – then post. Don’t take too long on replying to a message, or else you might just get a “Dude – you still there?” post. Sometimes, websites take certain advantages to our good nature.

For example: Have you ever gone into Facebook and turned off ALL email notification, then a month later find that they are emailling you again? You go into the settings and find they put up a new radio button on how to contact you and turned it on?

These are small privacy issues, but we are still talking privacy here. If Twitter was to inform people that I was online, I would most likely ask for a privacy button, or stop using the program alltogether.

Now I have said this before: If you are online, in some ways you forgo your privacy. I could run a program that could tell me everytime you use your computer, then send you a list of when and where you use it from. I would need specifics from your computer to do that, which would take a bit of legwork to do.

I will go online to talk at times. Then I can choose my program and turn it on. When I go on uStream, for example, I would like to talk to people. When I call up my IM – same thing.

There are those who love the toolbar; For that I say “Use it to your hearts’ content”. However, don’t assume I want to use it. Ask me if I want to use it – That way I am not surprised when someone says “Check out this Hottie…” when my boss is looking over my shoulder at my computer screen.

Firefox Add-ons, What Do You Use?

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 11:12 AM on July 26, 2009

I decided to do something a little different  on this post, instead of talking about one specific application I decided to talk about the Firefox  add-ons I use. I am wondering what Firefox extensions do you use and why. Every Firefox user has their own list of add-ons, which is one of the reason Firefox is so popular you can tweak it to your liking. Here is my list:

  1. DownThemAll
  2. Downloadhelper
  3. Foxytunes
  4. Twittytunes
  5. Ubiquity
  6. Feedly
  7. Stumbleupon

The first two application both aid in downloading items. The first Downloadthemall allows you to download all available files from a page or a specific extension from that page.  You can use it to download all software, image files, or video files. I use it a lot if I want to download multiple podcast feeds from a page.   I actually prefer  Downloadhelper for  downloading video files.  Downloadhelper will not only download the video file but it will also convert it, so you can play them on your various applications. It works great with YouTube video. Foxytune allows you to control various audio systems such as Itunes, Pandora, Xbox Media Center, Lastfm, Foxyplayer and Rhapsody directly from Firefox. I use it along with Twittytunes, which allows you to tweet what you are playing directly from the url field.   This is especially useful when its MusicMonday on Twitter.  Ubiquity is one of the most powerful of all the add-ons I have, it allows you to do multiple task, everything from adding events to your Google calendar to zooming your Firefox windows.  All of this without having to open up another tab. It is a great time saver and getting things done tool.   Feedly is a great way to read your rss feeds and share them on various social networking sites. It is set in a magazine style and is based on Google Reader and Twitter. Last but not least is Stumbleupon which is a great way to find new Web sites or a fun way to waste time. When you hit the Stumbleupon button it takes you a random page on the Internet, you can  control what type of page you stumble to.  If you stumble to a page you like you can share the page with the Stumbleupon community.

There are thousands of add-ons available through Firefox.  The  one of thing that you have to be aware of is what I call add on syndrome. This is where you start adding every extension or add on that people recommend, which will cause Firefox to either slow down to a crawl or  crash so often it becomes unuseable. Every once in awhile I go through my add-ons and really decide if I am using them or not. I remove the ones I am not using or have not been updated to work with the latest Firefox version.  The availabity of add ons is clearly Firefox’s biggest strength and why its so popular. So again my question is why Firefox extension do you use and why.

Apology from Amazon Over Kindle Orwell Flap

Posted by susabelle at 7:18 AM on July 25, 2009

From Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon:

“This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our “solution” to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we’ve received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.”

As reported earlier by another GNC contributing editor, Amazon had removed pirated copies of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 from people’s Kindles, and refunded their money.  Their public reason at that time was that the publisher requested their removal.  Later that week, they amended the reason to state that the copies that were uploaded to the Kindle Store (through their self-service platform that services third-party vendors) were pirated and/or illegal.  I have used the self-service platform myself, and had to go through a pretty rigorous gauntlet of authentification, so I find this a little difficult to believe.  But perhaps someone wasn’t paying attention.  And I imagine the third-party vendor involved has lost their right to upload anything or list anything on Amazon at this point.  At least I would hope so.

Users of the Kindle visiting the Community Forum seem to be happy with Bezos’ apology.  It probably should have come before they started yanking people’s copies back from their Kindles.

Walmart: Technology Destination

Posted by susabelle at 6:57 AM on July 25, 2009

walmartlaptopWalmart, retail giant and arguably the Store for the Common Man, is making a push to be a technology leader as well.  At least, when it comes to laptops and desktops.  While other retailers are floundering in the sea of the depressed economy, Walmart continues to post profits.  Everyone is looking for a deal, everyone is looking to squeeze all they can out of what few dollars they have.  And kids are going back to school in a few short weeks, requiring more and more electronics.

And that doesn’t mean we have to buy our kids netbooks.  Not when you can get an HP laptop, running Windows Vista with 3 gigabytes of memory and a 160-gigabyte hard drive, for just $298.  Or for $548, you can pick up an Acer-made Vista laptop with an eight-hour battery, 3 gigabytes of memory and a 320-gigabyte hard drive.

At those prices, every Common Man (and Woman and Child) can have a laptop of their own.

The naysayers believe Walmart cannot provide what people are looking for – expert sales help and assistance after the sale.  But when you can get a laptop for $400 or less, having “expert” sales help is not necessarily a key to a purchase.  The people needing the help will still go to electronics stores for their laptop and desktop purchases, while more tech-savvy and economically-minded individuals will be hitting the local Walmart for laptops for their kids and even themselves.  And these days, more and more people are becoming tech-savvy or know someone who is who can recommend an item for them.  I know, I’m asked all the time what I recommend and where to go.  I’ll likely be adding Walmart to my list of places to pick up discount laptops that will do the job just fine.

Verizon working on 4G sooner than later?

Posted by Nolan at 6:03 AM on July 25, 2009

Verizon and AT&T are going to transfer their systems over to the 4G LTE systems throughout 2010 according to past releases.  It appears that Verizon could be accelerating that time schedule according to a report on Appleinsider. Could it be to accomodate a new 4G equipped Apple product?  Who knows.  Anyway I digress.

So I was in my local Verizon store switching up some details of our family plan (one family member now moving on to their own plan. Yeah!)  And naturally, being an Apple fan, I slipped in a bit about the iPhone.  The salesmen said, “Well you know it won’t be with only AT&T forever.  It could be here some day.”  I added that it certainly would as Apple is greedy and wants to sell more phones, but that it wouldn’t happen until the change to 4G later in 2010 and early 2011.  He suddenly became coy with a slight smile.  Hmm.  Could it be word is sifting down that the change over is accelerating?

Verizon fans are salivating.  You know it.

Put That Thing Away Before You Get Us All Killed*

Posted by susabelle at 7:42 AM on July 23, 2009

Guilty.  I am definitely guilty.  I’ve done it before, I might do it again.  And I know lots of other people that do it too.

I’ve used my cell phone in the car while driving.  I’ve used it to talk, and I’ve used it to text.  More than once.  And I think I’m incredibly lucky not to have gotten killed (or killed someone else) by doing so.  In the last two or three months, I’ve made a definite effort toward not using my phone in the car unless I’m parked somewhere.  I’ve not stopped entirely, but I’ve reduced it considerably.  And I think I”m ready to give it up entirely, for my own safety and the safety of others on the road.

Distracted driving is distracted driving.  Talking on a cell phone, even hands-free, is distracting.  You are concentrating on the conversation, not the road.  You may think you’re concentrating on the road, the drivers around you, and that deer jumping across the lane in front of you, but the truth is, your brain puts the conversation first, which means the majority of your attention is there.  You’re driving a 3- 4- or 5-thousand-pound vehicle, a deadly weapon, and getting distracted by a phone call.  Any rational person can think this through, obviously, but how many of us, when that phone rings, can’t help but reach over and grab that phone and say hello?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently released studies that indicate that hands-free is no less dangerous than holding the phone up to your ear.  Plenty of stories have been in the news lately about cell phone accidents involving cars, commuter trains, buses, and even people walking down the sidewalk.

Harvard psychiatry professor John Hatey, in his research on attention, posits that the use of electronic devices like cell phones and MP3 players gives you a “dopamine squirt,” giving you a sense of well-being and connectedness that is addictive, almost drug-like.  No wonder we reach for that phone when it rings, even when it isn’t the right time to do so!

I hate to think that we need to legislate ourselves out of this, but if we can’t be responsible enough to put that thing away, then maybe that will end up being the only answer.

*Props to anyone who got the title reference to Star Wars.

Plastic Logic eBook Reader is a Go

Posted by susabelle at 6:59 AM on July 23, 2009

partners_programs_headerThe announced-with-much-hype Plastic Logic eBook reader looks like it is finally going to be available.  First announced over a year ago, the actual product has been hard to find in the wild, and so no one really knows if this is a legitimate contender for the eBook market.

I’ll wager that it is, and hope to get my hands on one soon.  The Plastic Logic eBook reader features something no one else in the market today can:  a reading space of nearly 8.5 x 11 inches!  This outdoes the Kindle DX by nearly half, and will allow true real-time navigation of documents and periodicals.  This, in my mind, has been one of the failings of the Kindle, and other ebook readers.  If you’re reading a novel or simple text, the Kindle is great.  I have one and love it for such things.  But if you need to read something with graphics, side-bars, footnotes, and other details, the Kindle, even in its DX form, just does not cut it.  The Plastic Logic model will handle these things with ease.

As an added bonus, the Plastic Logic reader is extremely lightweight while being extremely sturdy, since the entire device, including the reading screen, are made of plastic.  While I wouldn’t call the Kindle “heavy,” my DX does take some arm-strength energy to hold onto for more than a few minutes.

Plastic Logic has teamed up with Barnes and Noble and will be the recommended eBook reader for their newly-opened eBook store.  They have also teamed up with AT&T’s wireless network for speedy downloading.  Those using the device will be able to to use it on existing AT&T WiFi hotspots as well.  No price for the product, or the download service, has yet been announced.
