GNC-2009-08-14 #502 Batting a 1000 Tonight!

Posted by geeknews at 1:55 AM on August 14, 2009

Tonight show is complete but a small confession the first 12 minutes where recorded twice, first time I have done that in years. As soon as I started the show firefox crashed, the tricaster ran out of hd space, and a host of other things made it a complete circus. Don’t worry I save both the audio and video for a best of clips. Your host is 95% healthy again and I am announce a pretty cool new contest where you can win a Zune HD you will have to be creative to win though and will have to get on this pretty quick more in the show.

WordPress Theme Link Scam Site!

Posted by geeknews at 11:50 PM on August 12, 2009

Tonight I was working on a website I have not touched in years. I decided to install WordPress on it and went looking for a new theme. Being the Theme directory at WordPress is  useless in actually finding a topical theme I went to Search Google for WordPress Themes to see what other sites are out there.

I found a website with really nice themes that were free. Normally I have paid for each of my themes but I found a great one on the website. I downloaded it, and installed it in taking a close look at the page at the very bottom of the page I was shocked to see three linked url’s led to sites that I would never link to ever!. Here is what it looked like at the bottom of the browser window, believe me you do not want this on your website.

scamwp

Loading the theme editor and looking at the code in the Footer I found that the author had encrypted php at the bottom of the page. Needless to say alarm bells went off big time and I deleted the theme from the site.

Do not and I repeat do not download WordPress themes from wordpressthemesbase.com they are running a link farm scam in all of the themes I downloaded that will cause you a lot of harm when Google indexes your page.

You may get a free Theme but you will be pretty disappointed when your page rank goes to zero!

Conspiracy on US Chief Information Officer

Posted by geeknews at 2:54 PM on August 12, 2009

This morning John C. Dvorak published an article essentially accusing the US Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra of being a Phony! Generally when Dvorak publishes something as accusatory as this then where there is smoke will soon follow fire. Almost immediately Om Malik semi-refuted some of the educational concerns in Dvoark’s article but there is much more to this story than academic qualifications.

What I find the most disturbing is that for all purposes it appears at face value that the US CIO obtained the position through more political favor than technical knowledge. After all he was the CEO of some sort of a tech company that earned an amazing 67k.

I am sure managing a 67k budget with his last company qualifies him to distribute billions in stimulus money after all it’s only a difference of a few zeros. Our government at work folks.

MSOfficeiWord (yes, pun intended) comes today that a Federal District Court judge has barred the sale of Microsoft Word until further notice.  The ruling stems from a patent infringement lawsuit brought byI4i, a software company located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  The infringement relates specifically to customized XML being used in the creation of XML and/or DOCX files. In addition to the ban on sales of Microsoft Word, part of the Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft has been ordered to pay over $287 million in restitution and damages.

Microsoft plans to appeal the decision, which means that any implementation of the ban could be put off indefinitely.

In the meantime, Microsoft can start working on removing XML functionality from Word or find another workaround to the ban.  And I imagine with a bit of extra greasing of palms, this whole thing will go away as if it never happened.

Here is the summation of the ban from the court record:

Microsoft Corporation is hereby permanently enjoined from performing the following actions with Microsoft Word 2003, Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft Word products not more than colorably different from Microsoft Word 2003 or Microsoft Word 2007 (collectively “Infringing and Future Word Products”) during the term of U.S. Patent No. 5,787,449:

1. selling, offering to sell, and/or importing in or into the United States any Infringing and Future Word Products that have the capability of opening a .XML, .DOCX, or .DOCM file (“an XML file”) containing custom XML;

2. using any Infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML;

3. instructing or encouraging anyone to use any Infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML;

4. providing support or assistance to anyone that describes how to use any infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML; and

5. testing, demonstrating, or marketing the ability of the Infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML.

Forget IE6 – Update Your Windows XP

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 11:49 PM on August 11, 2009

So I was given another friends’ computer to fix. They were having overheating issues, which was easily deduced to a blocked fan. Nonetheless, when I turned it on I was greeted with the same issues that so many have not taken care of.

It was still on XP Service Pack 1.

What this meant was I was stuck doing the upgrades. I really don’t mind, but it made me think a bit about how people look at and use their computers; How they say they’re “Computer Stupid” and don’t know all the technical jargon I spew.

I hate that term – “Computer Stupid”.

To begin with, it’s not grammatically correct. With that aside, it’s not about if you know how to put together a computer. It’s about whether you read the signs – after all, if you didn’t read the road signs while driving, you might get lost. Then again, I know people that DO read the signs and still get lost…

So you turn on the computer and the first thing that pops up is an error message. What do you do? Do you 1. try to deduce the problem. 2. Consult a fellow IT friend or 3. Ignore the message altogether and select through it?

It’s amazing how many people do #3. Just like looking at that little “Change Oil” light in the car. After all, it looks so pretty when it’s on for the next 12 thousand miles…

Funny thing about these computers is the Windows Update feature is turned on. It says on the bottom there are updates to be run. Probably has said that on this computer for a long time. After all, I had to install Service Pack 2.

Recently, an initiative has come out trying to make people aware to the fact that they need to upgrade from IE 6. The initial push to IE 7 was slow simply because the added features caused online programs to not function and security holes to be created. The job at the time definitely did not want to make the upgrade because the banking software (for one) didn’t work with IE7.

Awareness has shown the masses that IE might not be the browser to run: The “Million Download” Firefox attempt brought more awareness to what we use for a browser. Still – 8 million downloads (now the Guinness record) is a far cry from as many computers that are out there. Since then Firefox has boasted 1 billion downloads – but how many computers really have the software on and how many people just didn’t go back to IE6?

It’s all about awareness. If the dirty dish is in the sink and you need to use it – you wash it. If the bag is in the hallway and you are coming through, you move it. Therefore, if the computer is telling you to update… You get the picture.

That’s not being “Computer Stupid”. It’s about being aware.

It’s even understandable if you select off it a couple times simply because you are working on something. But eventually, you should really just “Do it”. After all, it’s not going to go away. You might just end up paying for waiting in malware issues. In fact I am surprised this computer is not riddled with malware – especially since there is no Anti-Virus on it.

But that’s a whole other subject.

For now, don’t ignore the issue. Update the computer.

Here is hoping Apple loses

Posted by Nolan at 6:00 AM on August 10, 2009

A headline from a news article on AppleInsider, FCC investigates Apple, AT&T for Google Voice app rejection, reminded me of my secret wish.  I wish Apple would lose some anti-competitive lawsuits.  I don’t wish lawsuits on anyone, but sometimes it is the only way to shake a company loose.  So here are the questions of a Mac fan boy:

1) How is it legal for Apple to refuse any stand alone 3rd party browsers or mail clients for the iPhone? Would Apple redo how they allow software to be sold for OS X  now that most software is downloadable?  An app store for OS X maybe so they could keep any programs from duplicating their own functionality?  Hmm.

2)  How can a company that has it’s OS foundation built on an open-source technology, be so stinking proprietary? “Hey everyone we think you all should adapt the open-standard mini display port!  It will help all the consumers.”  “No, you cannot install our open-source core Unix software on any hardware but a mac.”  “No we will not license out the Magsafe power adapter to other companies for their products.”  Why do that?  It would only make you more money, while saving the electronics of the families you say you serve.  Time to release the death grip.

I must admit that on days like this I really want Apple to lose an investigation.  Not so that big government tells free businesses what to do, but so they begin to act fairly and openly.  Turn the corner Apple, play it straight.  Open up the company, release developers, license out the technology that people need.

Google Fights Back

Posted by susabelle at 4:36 PM on August 8, 2009

I have to give it to Google; they are 99% of the time ahead of the game.  They are bringing to bear things that other companies have only dreamed about.  And when they get push-back, they give as good as they get.

Today comes news that after Apple rejected the Google Phone app, Google has retooled the app and has made it available as a web site instead.  Take THAT Apple.  Of course, the developers at Apple are likely scrambling to find a way to block it, but they can’t block every website that comes up with another way to present an iPhone app that was rejected by Apple.  If they start, where will it end?

The cool thing about this is Google has shown/proved that you can get people what they are looking for and need without going through traditional channels every time.  How long before other developers follow suit?

The fact is, the availability of functionality in the iPhone is ultimately what will make it a success.  And that function comes through apps.  Without the apps, the iPhone is just another cell phone.
