Preparing to move overseas with technology (Not Todd!)

Posted by Nolan at 8:48 AM on August 6, 2009

airplaneMy wife and I, contributing editor Nolan, are just 4 weeks away from moving to a developing country for at least a year of humanitarian work.  So what about moving with technology?  First off what is not making the move?

  1. Desktop computers and second monitors.  Nope not going to make the suitcase.  To much weight too much space.
  2. Television & Players. Our 22 inch Samsung and dvd player are being given to a friend.  Will certainly miss the screen and its vivid movies.
  3. Bose audio system.  This was a tough one.  Its is a small 2 speaker/1 woofer system that sounds wonderful.  I really debated taking it.  The end decision came down to trying to clear customs in entering the country.  It would probably “get lost” in transit.
  4. Cell phones. No CDMA where we are going so the 6 year run with Verizon is over.  Going to try to beg out of my contract to avoid the fee since I have 5 months left on my contract.
  5. Printer.  Once again to much space.  Will look for one in country.

What is going to make the trip?  Small in size items.

  1. My wife and I each have a mac. They will both make the trip.  Mine, newer, will be covered by international travel insurance against theft and accidental damage.  My wife’s is 3.5 years old so we will pray over it!
  2. Four portable hard drives in our carry-on luggage. All Seagate Free Agent drives.  1 drive for each computer that will be our daily back-up drive.  1 drive that serves as our clone and will be backed up once a month at the second office location. 1 drive that contains all of our home media (interpret that how you will, but no DVD’s or CD’s are going with us).
  3. One desktop drive packed in a suitcase. Belongs to the organization and contains video footage (Reverse backed up to one of the portable drives).
  4. Two still cameras.  One point and shoot and one DSLR.  DSLR will be insured.
  5. One HD SSD video camera and cordless mic system. Getting decent video and audio will be important in this trip, but needed a small size without a huge (and thereby dangerous) investment.
  6. Two iPods. One Nano and One Touch.
  7. Power converters. These are heavy and will cost some extra money, but having dependable converters for stateside stuff is important.  Those easily available in country are not dependable (learned that the hard way last trip).
  8. Google Voice, Magic Jack, Local Phone. Another article later on how we are able to use these for easy stateside calling later.
  9. Prayer and a rabbits foot. Somehow we need all of this to not be stolen, confiscated, or taxed up the wazoo.

What is the condition of the internet over there? First off, I have left off the exact location for personal and safety reasons.  Let’s just say it is a developing country.  The internet is present but slow.  I expect upload speeds of somewhere between 56-128kb.  It seemed like a solid connection most of the time since our VOIP calls to them work well.  The pricing is either by the MB or unlimited at about $20/month.  Everything works well as long as there is power and/or the back-up power supply lasts.

So here we go.  A technology geek, hobby web-developer, going over to help people.  5 years ago there would have been zero internet.  Going now I am blessed.  Looking forward to corresponding and writing in the future from yet another technology perspective.

FCC vs AT&T, Apple, Google

Posted by John Parie at 1:13 AM on August 6, 2009

In what is sure to be one of the strangest and most debated Heavyweight technological showdowns of the 21st Century the FCC has called AT&T, Apple and Google to the principle’s office to get the bottom of things.

Since Apple introduced the App Store some people have defended them and their approach, “If we control the apps it will provide a better experience for everyone.”

Leading up to this, they (Apple/AT&T) have crippled the function of some major applications such as Slingbox and now Google’s apps, which have much better support on other devices on the same network such as Blackberry.

I think Apple is stuck between AT&T and the contract that they signed in trying to get their iPhone out the public with the best deal they could secure at the time.

But that excuse is starting to wear thin. In no way am I going to confuse my phone and a service that I signed up, was invited, then accepted and then installed the app on phone for the basic dialer on my phone.

My guess is AT&T viewed the next iPod of the cell phone market as the greatest thing ever for their bottom line, but underestimated the effect on their network.

When geeks across the world started using and creating programs for this device, that was bad enough, but when it hit the mainstream like AT&T had hoped it would like the iPod did they started to see the box they had opened.
Not only did they have one of the hottest selling technology devices, but it was back by a group that knew how to use it and wanted a lot from it. If that wasn’t bad enough, Apple and users were showing even more things to do with it other than check email and see some dumb down version of a website.
Now with the Google Voice app, it isn’t their data network that is in possible trouble, but their over priced SMS messaging service (Free on Google Voice) and number portability that is offered.
The outrageous data rates on SMS charged by carriers is  a know fact, the number portability is the thing that I think really gets them going. Take a tech savvy crowd, a free phone number for life, and no commitment to the old number that the carriers use to hold over you if ever though about moving on. That is the beginning of carrier impendence; the carrier and number are no longer the concern. Then it becomes the features and rates offered to you.

Now am I in no way trying to defend Apple in their choice to disapprove these items, I think it is their duty to their customers at the very least to explain exactly why programs such as these were declined and not hide behind a blanket statement.

I think if Apple had made this phone available to at least two carriers when it launched, much of the end user problems would have been avoided due to the simple fact of market competition and Apple being able to point the to the other carrier’s support or lack there of an application.

As much as I love and depend on my iPhone for my day-to-day business, I will really have start wondering what is a better value for me.

As always I can be contacted at Jparie@gmail.com, please let me know how your feel.

WiFi As It Should Be – Free

Posted by susabelle at 9:51 AM on August 5, 2009

Barnes and Noble Barnes and Noble, long in cahoots with AT&T for the paid Wi-Fi service in their brick and mortar stores, has gone free.  The service is still ATT, but it is free to anyone in the store.  I have always had access to their paid WiFi through my ATT account (high-end DSL users have access to all ATT WiFi hotspots), but for some, this hasn’t been an option.  I always wondered how long paid WiFi would last; once in place, WiFi services have a very low overhead and low maintenance costs, so to me, the $6.99 for one hour charges were excessive and unnecessary.  Not having free WiFi was often the reason I chose one cafe or bookstore over another.

So if you’re counting, some rather big retailers have now gone to free WiFi.  Panera Bread (based right here in St. Louis where I live) has always had free WiFi with no conditions.  Starbucks went free on their WiFi last year, although it comes with a few conditions.  The only remaining big-box bookstore without free WiFi is Borders, who has a contract with TMobile for their WiFi access, at an incredibly high price.  Many tiny cafes and independent bookstores have offered free WiFi for years, and most libraries offer WiFi as well, which is, of course, free.

Now it’s time for hotels to step up as well.  Every time I travel on business, I get nickel-and-dimed for WiFi access in a hotel room that I paid a pretty good price for to begin with.  Yet, if I book myself into the local Best Western instead, I can usually get a hot breakfast for free, plus all the WiFi I can consume in my hotel room.  The business hotels only offer free access in the lobbies if at all, and exhorbitantly priced access in the rooms themselves.  If the Best Western can get it right, why can’t the Milleniums and the Regencies and the Westins?

A Fun Day of Updating the iPhone

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 1:37 AM on August 5, 2009

I never expected it to go all day….

It started off by connecting the phone to my laptop. During the sync, it asked if I wanted to update to 3.0.1. I said yes – And the fun began.

The 300 Meg download was  quick and it loaded into the iPhone without issue. The phone rebooted and it said “Verifying Download”. The phone showed a USB cable and the icon for iTunes. That is where it sat for over an hour.

After 30 minutes, I started to get concerned. I read situations where people would update and it would brick the phone, something I didn’t want to deal with. Nonetheless, it was stuck.

I did the one thing that is not suggested – I killed iTunes and disconnected cable. Even after reboot of the phone, it still showed the USB cable. I hoped all it needed was to do this again.

I plugged the phone back in and iTunes said something to the effect the phone needed to be restored. Great – I don’t want to loose data on the phone, but I had no choice but to accept and let it fix the problem. Only thing is – it got to the exact same point and stayed there for another 30 minutes.

At this point I was Twittering everyone and scouring the internet trying to find an answer. After 3 tries, I realized the problem. When I set up my iPhone, I did that on my desktop. I learned of a trick to make the notebook and the desktop sync without removing any data. You basically make iTunes think it’s on the other machine by matching the unique ID.

Apparently when I updated the phone on the notebook, it hung on the iTunes because of confusion. When I switched it over to the desktop, the restore happened and the phone properly updated. I ended up loosing data from the last few days, but that was acceptable because it remembered all my settings.

I am glad I learned about this limitation now. 3.0.1 was a small update that I believe didn’t mess with the kernal. If this had been a major OS update, I might have locked the phone up to the point of no return.

From now on, I update on the desktop and leave the notebook to sync the music (because if I go back and forth, the iPhone will replace all songs with whats on the desktop, and vise-versa). Lesson learned.

Geek News Central Podcast Consumption Report

Posted by geeknews at 1:15 AM on August 5, 2009

I was shocked tonight when I was looking at some of my podcast consumption data. While the below screen shot is only a small part of our podcast statistic service I am seeing some amazing trends in just how people are downloading and consuming my show.

How my listeners are downloading and listening to my show is a radical change from just one year ago! I will let you digest it yourself, but the most remarkable thing I am seeing in this report is how blackberry downloads has exploded onto the charts who would have thought.

Note: The following data was a snapshot of Geek News Central Podcast consumption for July 2009 percentages are accurate within 0.25% and are compiled with the free Podcast Statistics my company makes available to podcasters worldwide.
