Major WordPress Attack Underway!

Posted by geeknews at 9:02 PM on September 4, 2009

If you are running an older version of WP version 2.8.3 or before you need to upgrade immediately. You risk having to re-install WordPress, this is a pretty major attack. If you host your blog at wordpress.com you are ok. This attack is reportedly growing by the hour.

Update:  Matt at WordPress and some remarks from Robert Scoble on how bad this Worm that is attacking older WordPress installs is!

Crux of this story here is you better have backups of your sites at all times!

My first Librivox audiobook chapter recording

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 10:39 AM on September 4, 2009

Electronic readers have been a hotbed as of late. Audio books are other ways to get the content on the go. Last week Google posted a bunch of open domain books, but did you know that there is also a service that lets you download open domain audio books?

Audiobooks iPhone Application

A couple weeks ago I found out about Librivox.org – a place to go to get audio books in the open domain. For the last few years, volunteers have been reading chapters to these books. I was so impressed with the service, I decided to contribute to the service.

I went to the site, signed up for a chapter, read and submitted it. I chose a book on musical notation by Karl Gehrkins. The chapter was short, but challenging enough – I had to remember how to pronounce those latin words you see all the time in music. After all, Molto Dolce is not just a coffee.

If you have an iPhone, check out the application “Audiobooks”. You will find that there is a book for whatever you want to read. I just got done listening to “How to write and speak correctly”. Hopefully it shows in this article, but I think I will be going back over that book for items I may have missed.

My iPod Touch Wish List

Posted by fogview at 9:31 AM on September 4, 2009

itouch-imgI was one of the first to get a Zune when it was announced. I also was one of the first to get an iPod Touch. Being first is great but like most “version 1.0″ products, you’re left wanting more.

There are rumors that Apple will refresh it’s its iPod line next week and I’m hoping that includes the iPod Touch. I’ve enjoyed my first generation Touch but I wish it did more. In fact I wish it was just like the third generation iPhone, without the phone (and the monthly bill).

Apple, if you’re listening, here is my wish list for a new and improved iPod Touch:
1. Camera. There are rumors this will be included and it would be a killer product if it had the iPhone camera that could do stills and video.

2. GPS and Compass. I realize that the iPhone uses GPS and google maps to show you where you are and you need an internet connection to update the maps, but there are a few turn-by-turn GPS programs that store the maps in the iPhone and don’t rely on a Internet connection. This would be perfect for the Touch. Also, wifi is showing up almost everywhere so I think it still makes sense.

3. Built-in mic and speaker. Yes, I know the 2nd generation Touch has a speaker but I want to make sure it stays in for the 3rd gen (my 1st gen Touch doesn’t have it). A built-in mic means you could use the Touch as a recording device (for voice memos and video), as well as for services like Skype.

4. Music subscription service. I know this isn’t specific to the iPod Touch, but since you are rumored to be coming out with big announcements, why not shock everyone and offer a monthly fee for a service that gives you unlimited (DRM-encoded) music (similar to what Microsoft offers for the Zune). That would really take the thunder out of the pending Microsoft Zune HD release.

5. Approve Google Voice application to run on the iPhone/Touch. Oh sorry, this is for a different blog post.

So, 09/09/2009, is the big day and I can’t wait to see what Apple announces. What is on your wish list for Apple announcements?

How Dangerous is Your Facebook Account?

Posted by susabelle at 9:13 AM on September 3, 2009

There have been some articles appearing lately about how you should not announce vacations on Facebook, lest you set yourself up for a home burglary.  When I first read these, I thought, “no, duh, of course you shouldn’t post that stuff on Facebook if you have a public profile, and if you only have true friends on your Facebook, you should be fine.”  Since I’ve had a few days to think about it, however, I have rethought my stance.

My Facebook friends/followers, and people I friend, are only those that I know in person and have contact with other than just through Facebook.  They are people I work with, members of my family, members of my spiritual family, and other friends.  I often post status messages that indicate what I’m up to or what my plans are, and I still think, for the most part, if your friends list are people you know in real life, this is still a safe practice. But, and this is a big one that some people may not think of, when I post a response to a status message, wall post, or information post that someone else has made, suddenly everyone who is friends with that person has access to what I’ve said in those comments.

This means that if I brag to a friend on their trip to Phoenix by saying, “I’m headed to Chicago this weekend!”, then I’ve suddenly opened my plans up to people I do not know personally.  And while I may not have specific information on my Facebook about where I live, or even my exact name, the risk still exists that someone I don’t know can victimize me or my family.

The risk increases with teenagers using Facebook, as well.  My teens have Facebook, and plenty of friends on their list that I may or may not have met personally (but of course “know” in one way or another), and an innocent post or response to a comment could let out a whole lot more information than should be out there.  As we all know, our teens think they are invincible.

So I guess it’s time for mom to get out the “Internet is bad” hat and have a talk with the teens about their Facebook activities.  In this case, forewarned is fore-armed.

Hide what you want in Facebook

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 7:15 PM on September 2, 2009

Working on Facebook everyday, I have been noticing more and more friends using the applications. They may be fun and enjoyable, but today I pulled up the program and about 75% of the posts were either Garden requests, quizes, high scores on some game or another program that bluntly, I just don’t care about.

I stopped using applications when Facebook changed their site around last year. I have a couple applications, like a birthday one and the origninal Hugs app, but that’s pretty much it.

The best part about this version of Facebook is that I can hide certain things. If someone is posting too much, I can hide it. If someone is being annoying, I can hide it (luckily I didn’t have to do that yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve been hidden simply because of how I use Facebook).

Nonetheless, I can not only hide a person, I can also hide an application. Here is how you do it.

First, go down to the post in question. Place the mouse cursor on the right side and you will see a “HIDE” option.

A Facebook application

A Facebook application

When you see the “HIDE” option, hover over. It will give you options to hide the user or hide the application. In this case, I want to hide the “Sunshine Garden” app.

Hide the App

Hide the App

Once I select, the application is forever hidden – at least I would hope it is.

The only 2 downfalls to this:

  1. I have to do this process on every new program that comes across. Therefore it’s a constant battle. I really would like to see Facebook make a “Hide all notifications from applications” option.
  2. If I am accessing from an iPhone, I do not have an option to hide things. However, the newer version of Facebook for iPhone has set it so if you hide it on the webpage, it will hide it on the iPhone app. The previous version didn’t, so I had to endure with all those posts.

I emplore Facebook to look at these options. I am not an application user. I want to be informed on what people are doing. I don’t want to miss some good information simply because some people are tending to their underground garden or are virtually drinking heavilly.

After all, what fun is that?

An Unusual Fish Finder

Posted by fogview at 8:26 AM on September 2, 2009

CIMG1748 I was out running on the levee this morning and a small fishing boat zoomed by with a man and a small  dog. I watched as the dog ran to the front of the boat, started barking and then turning in circles. The man immediately stopped the boat and dropped his fishing line into the water. The dog was still barking and watching the water. A minute later the man pulled out one fish and then another. This went on for a few minutes and then the man and dog took off for another site unknown.

So what does this have to do with tech? It just goes to show that some times the best solution is not always the latest high tech gadget, and can be something as simple as man’s best friend.

2009 Podcast Awards

Posted by geeknews at 12:53 AM on September 2, 2009

pca-2009 It is Podcast Awards Season again and for many of you that helped me in 2008 you know  how much hard work it is to put this event together. I had contemplated not holding the event this year. But the number of emails that I have been responding to convinced me to go ahead and get the ball rolling.

We will follow the same rules as 2008 and will be looking for sponsors to provide some great prizes for all of our winners. Last year we were able to give away more than $5000.00 in prizes to all of the award winners.

Nominations open on Oct 4th, 2009 at 2100 EST. Details are on the Podcast Awards website. We will be putting the site into pre-nomination mode tomorrow when our good friends from One Technologies login and get the site ready for the 14 million visitors over the next 60 days.

Last year the servers nearly melted we will see if we can actually bring it to it’s knees this year.
