i am soooo glad i weaned myself off microsoft. the pain and degradation of all the money i spent keeping it running and the anxiety of how much more i would have to spend was unbearable. i was fortunate to find a much more reliable and dependable alternative and to my utter amazement it was totally free. i am happy, joyous, secure, and free now that i no longer use microsoft products.

p.s. hehe, ain't y'all glad i didn't mention linux once? ooops!

I absloutely hate the way PC manufacturers do this. And they are doing it to their least tech-savvy customers at that.
As part of my job, I have purchased and set up dozens of new PCs from Dell in the last few months. These are purchased through our corporate account, and they all ship with a set of recovery discs. Ironically, we throw them in a box, and re-image them from a pre-built image.

Also as well. You can make a Hardware specific DVD for the computer right after you get back into it. This would be the same as having a disc on hand as if the manufacture (Acer in this case) had supplied one.

Of course laptop manufacturers are "more interested in selling you new hardware than allowing you to repair the ones you already have". They want you to return the machine to them so that they can charge you to fix it.
