The ZAGGbox Personal Media player is a pretty amazing device. It records, stores, and plays all your videos, photos, and music in a single device. It automatically reads and transcodes any video codec into two formats at one time: one for television viewing, and a separate version optimized for mobile viewing.

Checking Your Website with Browsershots

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 1:10 PM on February 21, 2010

I always forget about this website.  When I finally go there to check my site amongst OS browsers, I always find one small problem. Quick change in the CSS and everything is all better.

I am talking about Broswershots. They simply take my site and call it up using different browsers on all Operating Systems. Linux, PC, Mac and BSD checking the following browsers:

  • Avant
  • Chrome
  • Dillo
  • Epiphany
  • Firefox
  • Flock
  • K-Meleon
  • Galeon
  • Iceape
  • Iceweasel
  • Internet Explorer
  • Kazehakase
  • Konqueror
  • Minefield
  • Navigator
  • Opera
  • Safari
  • SeaMonkey
  • Shiretoko

I can also view the many versions of the browsers. Let’s say I am optimizing for Internet Explorer. I can check IE 4.0, 5.0, 7.0 or 8.0 on a Windows format. Check the boxes, enter the URL and away we go.

What Dillo sees of my websites from Browsershots

The process is not instantaneous. The service will set a 30 minute time limit which you can extent, but you have to physically be there to do so. If you checked all boxes, then you will definitely need to extend the process a couple times. It can also really show you how slow your website might load if you have an influx of users. One website I checked came up with all versions in about 10 minutes, yet another website (a little more PHP process driven) took a little more time.

Once your screenshots appear, you can view and download. Of course, this is dependent on the Internet connection at both sides, so you may have to request a new screenshot if you don’t see the proper results. For instance, IE 8.0 came back with a blank screen. I then told Broswershots to retry and the end result was perfect.

This website is pretty useful in detecting problems. Although I do have a PC, Mac and Ubuntu machine, I am really happy I don’t have to load up every browser on those machines. It’s about 80 different browsers and their versions to choose from. I am hoping soon they will also check across phone browsers. That will be a perfect addition to Browsershots.

Apple thinks Skin is Porn!

Posted by geeknews at 11:23 PM on February 20, 2010

Someone over at Apple is a bit nervous about women in Bikinis. As they have banned “every” iPhone app that shows any skin. The rumor on the street is that if you have a picture of a woman in a Afghani Burqas you are good to go. All pictures of men, require that they be wearing long sleeve shirts, any hint of chest hair requires that the shirt be buttoned all the way to the top, ties are optional.

Once again Apple proves that if you have a business model that they suddenly feel is impacting their idea of appropriate you are going to be out of business. Odd that the Playboy application is still online? Maybe Apple has just signed a multi-billion deal with the Porn Industry, with the porn industry magazine sales down, and with the iPad coming online it could be pre-cursor to being able to pick up Playboy on the iPad / iPhone. After all I bet those applications will sell and bring in more revenue for Apple than the Bikini applications.

Those bikini application companies are now out of business probably the folks that have puppy apps are next. Sucks to be them, but come on did anyone think it was really going to last. Apple has thrown the morality flag, any image in any application that may be considered titillating in any way will be rejected.

Did I say the Playboy application was still available!

Ohhhh I almost forgot you do remember that you can go to any website in the world with Safari.. After all the Internet is a completely sterile place. I suppose they will have to remove Safari from the iPhone as well. Ohh and might as well remove the camera from the iPhone after all someone may take a picture at a swimming pool. Jeez I wonder if they are going to start searching my Macbook for pictures as well?

The Ultimate Bug Zapper

Posted by Andrew at 9:17 AM on February 19, 2010

At TED 2010, Nathan Myhrvold of Intellectual Ventures Laboratory showed off  its Photonic Fence proof of concept.   Basically, this is a very capable mosquito killer, which uses lasers to shoot the wee monsters out of the sky at up to 100 times a second.

The concept is targetted (sorry) for malarial regions, potentially hospitals or schools, and the technology is able to tell the difference between a mosquito and other objects based on size and wing-beat frequency, thus allowing mosquitos to be zapped but bees to be left alone.

The setup does require some configuration with a light reflective screen – you can’t just plonk the gadget down and let it get on with it – and while malaria control is a worthy goal, I can’t help but wonder if there are better commercial opportunities in protecting high-value crops.

There’s a video on the Ventures Lab site (link above) which shows the device in action.

Apparently this is just a proof-of-concept made out of readily available parts and they’re looking for commercial partners to see if it’s a viable concept.  Expect to see the mosquito laser turret in a few years.

Top 25 Coding Errors

Posted by Andrew at 8:41 AM on February 19, 2010

The Mitre Corp has produced the 2010 CWE / SANS Top 25 Most Dangerous Programming Errors which identifies the most commonly encountered coding errors that can potentially lead to web sites being hacked or PCs being compromised.  Some of the errors are well-publicised in the technical press, e.g. “cross-site scripting”; some are downright stupid, e.g. “use of hard-coded credentials” and others are the results of carelessness, e.g. “improper validation of array index”.

However, what makes this document better than the usual Top-X lists is that it provides guidance to programmers on how to prevent or mitigate the errors.  For example, to avoid cross-site scripting it suggests, “Use languages, libraries or frameworks that make it easier to generate properly encoded output.  Examples include Microsoft’s Anti-XSS library, the OWASP ESAPI encoding module and Apache Wicket“. There’s additional information for the technically-minded that goes through the different stages of software development starting with initial design, through to compilation, implementation and testing.

One of the best pieces of advice is in the discussion around checking for unusual or exceptional conditions, “Murphy’s Law says that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Yet it’s human nature to always believe that bad things could never happen, at least not to you. Security-wise, it pays to be cynical. If you always expect the worst, then you’ll be better prepared for attackers who seek to inflict their worst. By definition, they’re trying to use your software in ways you don’t want.”

So, if you are into web programming in any way, this has to be mandatory reading to keep the bad guys at bay.  Even if you are not, the discussion elements for each of the errors is illuminating in showing exactly what is going wrong and why it’s bad.  Just skip over the technical bits in between.
