A Personal Reality Check for Bandwidth Caps

Posted by Andrew at 3:35 AM on March 5, 2010

Over the years of GNC, I’ve heard Todd rail on about broadband bandwidth caps and while I’ve enjoyed his rants, it’s been low priority topic for me.  Why? Because I think I’m a power user with a good selection of podcasts, a fair bit of online TV viewing, some (legal) music downloads. However, in a single month, I have never got anywhere near 50GB.  I think 30-something gigs was the most.

And then came the email from my service provider telling me that if I continued as I was going, I would exceed my bandwidth cap shortly.  Although I wouldn’t be cut-off, daytime bandwidth would be throttled.  I was a bit surprised but when I checked the firewall logs, it was correct – if anything, they were under-measuring by a few GB.

So, looking back, why the surge in data usage?  Well, I’m going to blame Todd and the Tech Podcast Network coverage of CES.  It was so good, I downloaded every single one of the videos, watched a few of them on-line, just couldn’t get enough.  I even downloaded some of the them twice, once for my PC and once for my Palm Pre!

Removing tongue from cheek, yes, it was the coverage of CES that bumped up the stats but it showed me that a bandwidth allocation of 50GB per month doesn’t actually go that far once you start getting into video.

Recently, I’ve also bought an Archos media player that can go online and stream content direct to my TV.  I’ve been pretty impressed by the viewing experience, even with only a wireless connection.  Although I can do the same with my laptop, having a dedicated appliance is far move convenient.

I don’t have any doubt that online distribution of films and TV programmes will take off in a big way, especially when it comes built-in to the TVs.  As an aside, a built-in media player is far more attractive to me than 3-D!  It’s also clear to me now that the telecoms companies are going to have to up their game to cope. If they’re smart, it’s an opportunity to make money and the competition for broadband services in the UK is pretty healthy.

For consumers like me, it’s time to start looking for deals with caps bigger than 50GB.

Quick – Tweet Now! You Might Be the 10 Billionth Twitter!

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 11:30 PM on March 3, 2010

Well, the craze is on. 10 Billion Tweets will probably be hit by time you read this. 600 tweets a second (2.16 Million an hour). So in about 18 hours – Depending on how many people go Tweet crazy – The 10 Billionth Twitter will be posted.

The 5 billionth was held by Robin Sloan, who posted “Oh Lord”. It was a reply to another tweet.

I am guessing you won’t get a new car or $10,000 iTunes card. You will get some recognition as the Deccabillitweeter. I know that’s not a word, but maybe it will catch on….

If you want to catch all the madness – even have a Twitter countdown party – You can go to GigaTweet and watch the proverbial Twitter Ball drop. Wear a funny hat and a blow into a noisemaker. Maybe even drink some champagne. I think that is what Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone will be doing.

Firefox Addon Site Launcher

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 7:58 PM on March 3, 2010
I am a member of a Web site called MyLikes, it was previously called Likeaholixs. As a member of the Web site I signed up to do sponsor ads for them on my personal Web site, Musing and Gadgets. Yesterday I was sent a message that a sponsor ad was available and it was for a Foxfire add on called Site Launcher. This is an add on I had not tried before, so before I did a sponsored it,  I wanted to make sure I tested it out. So since yesterday I have been testing it on Firefox and I have to say I really like it. It is an app I would recommend to any Firefox user. It allows you to easily open up a favorite Web site using three key strokes. This video shows how to set it up and use it. I hope you enjoy it.

Has Six Degrees of Separation Really Become Three?

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 9:04 PM on March 2, 2010

I was rummaging through my photos and videos the other day and realized something. There is no more six degrees of separation. I have met people in the last year that have in fact hob-nobbed with the celebs. I have Friends on Facebook being friends with other friends of facebook – And I don’t even know how they know each other. It really begs the question: Is the 6 degree thing really a lot closer than that?

Six degrees of Separation is a movie and a Kevin Bacon game. How many people can you go through til you get to Kevin Bacon? It really started as a movie reference – you would name a movie that had 2 people in it, then you pass through other movies and TV shows to see when they knew Kevin Bacon. Sometimes, you would get to the end in less than 6.

But now with so many movies out and different actors in different roles (not to mention IMDB to link it all), you could most likely find less than 6 degrees there. And the cool part is that it’s not just celebrities that this happens to – It is everyone.

Example: Yesterday I saw a post to an old friend from Facebook. I went up on their page and interestingly enough, another person is both our friends. That seems to happen all the time. I go to someone’s page and notice that we both know person C, person D and so on. My friends have become friends – with my other friends.

And distance is not a factor anymore. I had a friend in TX, but last year another friend went to TX and met that person, then THEY became friends. Social Networking tells me this.

What about Kevin Bacon? I could do that in a couple step easily. I met and talked with Anthony Edwards last October at Blogworld. Top Gun – Mystic River. BAM! Done. Oh wait. Another – Top Gun – A Few Good Men. BAM! Done again.

While I cannot boast 1 degree of separation, it’s pretty dang cool to say it can happen in 2. This social experiment is really showing us that we are more connected with each other.

21 years ago, Tim Berners Lee mapped out the basics of the Internet. Nowadays, that basic roll has moved to a wireless mobile level. But did Tim Berners-Lee think that this would bring us all closer together? Maybe. He did know that we could at least communicate better.

Communication; Or at least the thought you are communicating. I don’t think I would get a response from Ashton Kutcher simply because I follow @aplusk on Twitter and reply to something he says. But it could happen: And then I still have to wonder if that was Ashton that said it, or someone helping him control his reply box.

So I think it’s time to retire the “Six Degrees of Separation” idea and take it down to at most – 3. After all, if you cannot get to another through 3 people, then you might just be a Hermit. At that point, this social experiment wouldn’t even matter…

Geek News Central at SXSW

Posted by geeknews at 12:29 PM on March 1, 2010

I will be in Austin for SXSW from March 11th to 15th. Unlike CES I will be going Solo and this will change the way I cover this event. Expect more intimate interviews some audio and some video dependent on the situation, location etc.

I am also going to try and live stream some of the events as well but this year is more exploratory to see what we can do next year on a larger scale.

If you would like to meet with me at SXSW please contact me as soon as possible so I can get you written in.

Palm & WebOS 1.4 – We’re Getting There

Posted by Andrew at 7:35 AM on March 1, 2010

Late last week Palm pushed out an upgrade to its WebOS operating system for the Palm Pre and Pixi phones, taking them to version 1.4.  In the past few weeks, Palm has taken a fair amount of flak, primarily from analysts but also from users.  Its performance in Europe hasn’t exactly been stellar though it seems to have done well enough in Germany and even the US numbers weren’t as good as expected.

However, with WebOS 1.4 I feel the phone and the platform is really getting somewhere and Palm is starting to get it right.

First of all 1.4 was pretty much released simultaneously to all phone users.  Previously, there were weeks between the CDMA version coming out and then the GSM version being released.  As a GSM owner, nothing irked more than a new version coming out on CDMA and everyone talking about features you couldn’t yet have.

Secondly, not only are bugs being fixed, but new features are being added.  For example, in addition to video recording, there is now video editing on the phone.  Brilliant for taking videos of the kids,  removing the rubbish parts and forwarding to the grandparents.  I played around with the video recording over the weekend and it’s surprisingly good.

Thirdly, the WebOS is ready for Flash, which is coming Real Soon Now via a download from the AppCatalog.   And by the way, the browser scores 92/100 on the Acid 3 test.

Fourth, the AppCatalog is filling up nicely (albeit there still aren’t paid apps in Europe yet either.  That’s coming RSN too.)  I’ve got to the point where I’m only waiting on two apps to be released before I can leave the legacy PalmOS apps behind and one of these is already available in the US.  The other – DataViz’s Documents To Go - is hotly anticipated by many Pre and Pixi owners.

Fifth, Palm Synergy might be Palm’s unique selling point tying on-line calendars, contacts and email back to the phone and merging them seamlessly, but it’s also encouraged others to think similarly.  For example, RSS readers that sync with Google Reader (Feeds Free), finance apps that link with an online version (ClearCheckBook), info organisation (Evernote),  task tracking (Outline Tracker) and so on.  I love being able to do stuff when I’m out and about on my phone and then have access to exactly the same information when I sit down at my desk.

Finally, multitasking.  WebOS has always had this but the ability to have more than one app open at a time is the only way to go.  Right now, I have Tasks, Feeds Free (an RSS reader), Tweed (a Twitter client),  DrPodder (a podcatcher), Email, Videos and Outline Tracker, all open at once.

For awhile there, I was really kind of “take-it-or-leave-it” about Palm and WebOS.  I’d felt a little let down that the features and programs I’d been used to on my Treo 680 just weren’t there.  With the release of 1.4, I’m feeling better about the Pre and what it can do for me.  We’re getting there.
