Solar Charger for the iPhone

Posted by susabelle at 8:02 AM on May 19, 2010

We should all chip in and get one of these for Todd.  Surely there is enough sunshine in Hawaii that he could take advantage of for charging his iPhone.  Offered by Novothink, the device becomes a case for your iPhone, along with having a solar panel on the back side.  It also includes a charging cable for hooking up to your laptop’s USB port to charge the iPhone that way.

Imagine, driving down the road, iPhone on the dashboard of the car, charging while you’re driving.  Or when you’re at the pool.  Or in the back yard.  Or on a camping trip.  Or simply by placing it on a window sill.  Of course, depending on the tinting of the window in question, you may or may not get a decent amount of charge, but on long trips, I can see this working pretty well.

And yes, it works on the iPod too.  I don’t have an iPhone, but I have a very beloved, and abused, iPod.  I can see me using such a device.

Costs start at 69.95.  Somewhat pricey, but considering how much the device cost in the first place, and how often you may run out of power and have no way of charging your device (especially the power-hungry iPhone), the cost would be worth it.  And the best part?  The Novothink Solar Surge is Apple-certified!

On my Way to Explore Ford Motor Company!

Posted by geeknews at 11:15 PM on May 18, 2010

I am sitting in the Red Carpet lounge here in Honolulu about to get on a flight that will take me to my home state of Michigan as special guest of the Ford Motor Company. I was contacted a month or so ago and asked if I would be willing to come out and tour facilities that are not normally scene by the general public. I have my standard load of HD Pro Cameras, Tripods, Wireless Microphones and several Digital cameras to capture what they let us film.

We have been given a schedule on what we will see and I want to share that with you know so you know what to expect in the Special Media Feed next week in regards to videos.

  • Manufacturing Ergo Lab
  • VIRTTEX Lab
  • PowerWall, CAVE and iVR
  • 2010-2011 Model Drive Opportunties
  • Steering and Handling
  • High Speed Track
  • Product Review Center Safety and Technology Demos

Overall it will be a very big day. As a disclaimer Ford is paying for my airfare and lodging in Dearborn. I have opted to stay a few days later and will be paying for my Rental Car and additional lodging.

In recent days Ford continues to lead the way in innovative programs. Ford executives and students from the University of Michigan recently unveiled two Ford Fiesta cars that are equipped with customized applications to start out on an American Journey 2.0 with the first ever social media-connected road trip. Today they announced that they are testing a next-generation technology – originally developed for the Department of Defense and University of Iowa’s Virtual Soldier Research (VSR) Program – to simulate motion and provide feedback on forces against the human body – all done in a virtual avatar environment.

The new avatar – who goes by the name “Santos” – is an enhancement to Ford’s current virtual reality and design processes where human limits with dynamic motion can be fully seen and analyzed.  Santos has been programmed with a complete biomechanical muscular system, so he is subject to the normal laws of physics.

I am not sure what surprises they have for us in Dearborn but I am going to make sure I get as much of the really cool stuff on tape as possible.

iPhone and Android OS Updates

Posted by Nolan at 7:46 PM on May 16, 2010

Apple introduced the new iPhone and iPad OS 4 to be released this summer and fall.  In January Google released Android 2.1.  Now this week at it’s own conference it will introduce 2.2.  What’s the difference?   How soon it will make it to the phones.

Because of the open nature of Android each manufacturer is tweaking or establishing a cover interface.  And now 3 months after the release it is just now making its way to the phones.  This isn’t an OS comparison piece.  Android is an incredible mobile platform.  It will probably carry the majority world wide before long.  It will have multiple features I will wish my iPhone possessed.  However it seems it could face a road block similar to the Windows OS.

In another year we will have 100′s of Android models on the market.  This “one” is still on 2.1 and can’t upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3.  This “one” can but the manufacturer is late in getting the upgrade out and it is filled with bugs.  Could this not lead to market confusion or OS instability?  I am aware that the iPhone 4 software will only work on the 3GS and above but there are significantly fewer models for confusion.

Apple has a closed app store with some inconsistent policies.  Apple frustrates me with it’s seemingly anti-competitive stance on some apps that provide competition to their own.  However, Apple makes my phone really easy to update, use, maintain, and service.  I love only going to one store for all my shopping.  I like the easy button I guess. I may be naive or foolish, but I do believe that by staying with the iPhone it will remain easy, cutting edge, and of course overpriced.  Eventually I would love to try out an Android phone for a while.  I think the system totally rocks and I love open source.  I’m just concerned that with it “easy” disappears.

Should Google Buy Blockbuster? Why Not?

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 2:58 PM on May 15, 2010
Google Blockbuster

Google Blockbuster

The once-king of movie rentals is now losing on market share big. Their online rental system is non-existent, thanks to a patent battle win by Netflix in 2006. So how can Blockbuster cure part of their problems? Maybe sell to Google?

Back in 1985, David Cook put together the first Blockbuster store in Dallas, Texas. Scott Beck, John Melk and Wayne Huizenga took it to franchise – which would then be bought by Viacom.

From there, it was pretty much opening stores and gobbling up others like a Pac-Man game. I remember a local company called Doorstep video that was acquired by Blockbuster by 1990. By 2000, Blockbuster was the dominant movie rental chain.

Enter the Online Movie Revolution

Once the Internet began to infiltrate, the ability to order movies at home caused concern to the rental industry. The only thing to do is join the revolution. Blockbuster and Netflix show up with rental business models. What a great idea – Rent a movie from the computer and wait a week for a disc, watch it, then wait another 2 weeks for the next disc.

Of course within time, that model would get better. No late fees, return at any time. They even found it worked on a gaming model with Gamefly.

Blockbuster sweetened the pot with the option to return to their stores and get more movies while they wait for the next titles. Add no late fees – It looked like a great option. Netflix went a different route. They went the online way – Movies from your computer right now. Through the web or through a set-top box.

Movies on Demand – Netflix on everything

Netflix’s model seemed to be more powerful than Blockbuster’s. Of course, you could only get Blockbuster on limited devices. Netflix is on the web, through your Boxee, Roku, TiVo and more. Last year, Netflix subscriber base grew and Blockbuster lost share. They closed stores, but that was not enough to keep up with Netflix and now emerging Red Box locations – where you can rent movies in the grocery store (which you have to go to anyway).

Lawsuits

Franchise owners sued Blockbuster for their “Total Access” feature. Netflix sued Blockbuster for copying their online model. Blockbuster was also investigated for their “No Late Fee” claim. The issue was over it possibly being misleading. Blockbuster would charge a “restocking fee” for any movie 30 days late, as well as charge the renter the full price of the video if it also was over 30 days late.

It’s probably a good thing they didn’t buy Circuit City in 2008. Blockbuster might not have been around today if that acquisition came through.

So why should Google buy Blockbuster

After all that, you may be wondering why I think Google should buy Blockbuster. It seems like the company is a failing business model, but that’s not completely true. It’s just disorganized.

Blockbuster needs to enter the on demand market the same way Netflix has – ASAP. What a better way than through Google.

YouTube by Blockbuster

YouTube has struggled to get their online rental model going. Distribution companies like Paramount and Universal try to limit the on-demand option by at least 30 days. On Demand rentals turn into a “let’s watch this movie while we wait for the new stuff”. Hopefully you can find something in the sea of B-movies.

With Blockbuster’s online rental, along with brick and mortar stores and YouTube’s on-demand models, it might be a great marriage. Add to that, YouTube has reach on Boxee, Roku and TiVo already, along with a host of other devices. For $14.95 a month, you could get the best of both worlds.

How moving Google on the block would change Blockbuster

There is still something to be said about the store on the corner. Google could definitely take advantage of the older business model. Just look at how popular the Apple store is.

Google Blockbuster stores could not only have movie and game rentals, but also be the place to try out the Android OS. Maybe play with a Android tablet or phone. You could buy some Blogger wear and get expert advice on Google Adsense or maybe how to make a good YouTube video.

Get in on the Gaming

Oh, yeah – we didn’t even touch game rentals. Of course, Google would enter in a new market. They would compete with Game Fly for rentals and Best Buy for purchases. The “games on demand” market is in it’s infancy. When it explodes, Google will be right there to cash in.

Win-Win?

Google would get local exposure, while Blockbuster’s model would grow dramatically. YouTube would get a boost on their online movie rentals, Android might get a home and Google would get into the gaming market at the right time – when it is low.

One should expect that to change when people start spending again, because there is still a great predicted growth in this market.

Blockbuster is trying to cut costs to keep investors happy. Their stock price is bordering on losing their filing. They have put their international assets on the market and will be closing stores in the next quarter to compensate. Google stepping in and paying a modest price including stock buyout would keep the company from going under.

Of course, this is only a suggestion. Other companies would also profit from getting Blockbuster – Best Buy and Walmart for example. Even Apple could see great advantage to incorporate what Blockbuster has. It’s just a question of who’s gonna do it.

Talking to Phone Customers Before they go Over in Minutes… What a Great Idea!

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 1:41 PM on May 12, 2010

Cell Phone Overage

Yes, there was sarcasm in the title. But the FCC proposed a really is a great idea. Tell people when they are about to hit their limits.

I remember when I got my first overage bill. It was $130 more than expected. While I was a bit perturbed, I understood and paid it off. Definitely took a hit in my pocketbook.

Of course I did have a Land line and my Nokia phone (which still was just for calling people) had only 250 minutes and $.40 a minute after. I also could walk 20 feet to the west and all of a sudden get “Roaming” charges. So going over on a plan was easy – in 1998.

Nowadays, the land line is gone in liu of Skype and Google Voice. The Cell is the primary contact for calls, texts, emails and facebook posts. I have an unlimited text and data plan and if I go over in minutes, I have a backlog of rollover to keep me safe. Then again, I pay $130 a month…

Stopping the Overage:

37 years after the first cell phone call was made, companies are finally realizing that someone might go over in their minutes. O.K, the FCC is realizing this and trying to make the phone carriers comply. If the user hits their limit, they get a message stating that.

The user then can choose if they want to rack up additional charges or turn their phone off until the next month starts. Wait – you can turn a phone off?

Similar but Sad: Data Plan overage

Vodafone in the UK – who nixed their unlimited data plan – announced they will be offering a free text service to warn people if they hit their limit. So those of you in the UK who watch their soaps or Dr. Who from the phone during lunch might not be able to watch more than 1 episode for the whole month.

Remember last year the Chicago Bears fan who watched the game from his netbook on a cruise ship? He got $3000 in overage fees for his wireless data plan.

It’s all about a text

I get texts from AT&T whenever my bill is ready; Or if I haven’t paid last months yet. I suppose it’s time of month to see that text message aga…. oh wait. Here it is. They are so eager to make sure you pay your bill, but not that eager to let you know if you stretch your limits.

Automation

It’s not like someone has to sit by their phone and text everybody that goes over “Dude: You’re hitting your limit.”. We have automated scripts that can do that. Just like my bank has an automated script to tell me when my account hits below…. oh wait. Just got THAT text message, too.

I totally agree on an alert system. I can’t log into the website everyday to see where I am in minutes. Then again, if I ever go over
