The Verizon Refund Debacle

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:00 PM on October 5, 2010

In case you missed the news yesterday and today, Verizon Wireless is refunding approximately $50 million to about 15 million of it’s wireless customers.  This stems from incorrect billing that the company did over the past few years.  In a statement posted to Verizon’s website they stated:

“We have addressed these issues to avoid unintended data charges in the future. … When we identify errors, we remedy them as quickly as possible.”

However, the FCC investigation into this is still ongoing.  According to FCC rep Michele Ellison:

“But questions remain as to why it took Verizon two years to reimburse its customers and why greater disclosure and other corrective actions did not come much, much sooner.”

The question still remains if the FCC will fine Verizon (Ellison did not rule that out).  They are still attempting to determine if Verizon “intentionally” charged a $1.99 per MB data charge to phones that did not have data plans.

Obviously the ramifications if Verizon was knowingly charging people for the data they didn’t use would be disastrous for the company.  At this point we can’t even speculate if that was the case, and honestly, we may never know.

But here’s what I do know.  I (and my wife and daughter) are Verizon Family Plan customers.  I have a smart phone and pay a $29.99 monthly data plan.  However, my wife and daughter do not have smart phones (they both the LG Cosmos).  My daughter just recently got her first phone so there has not been a problem with that, but my wife, periodically, over that past year or so noticed a data charge for her phone on our bill.  It wasn’t there every month, just a few times.  It usually ranged from $2-4.  A couple of times she called and inquired, but never got a satisfactory answer.  And, let’s face it, the charge was too small to put much effort into pursuing.

I can’t say that Verizon did this intentionally and I want to believe they didn’t because I really am happy with the service.  I can say that if I were going to set up a scam I would certainly think that billing a lot of people a little bit would be the best way to do it and not get noticed.  But that proves nothing.  I will withhold judgement and continue with our service with them.  But what I am a bit upset about is the settlement amount – between $2 and $6 per customer.  First, I have no idea how they have determined who the affected 15 million customers were and if we are even on the list.  Second, I calculated the total amount we were overcharged to be a good bit more than the refund that may be coming.  Granted it’s still a small amount of money, but it does leave a bit of a bad taste behind.

Blade Runner Revisited in Gigapixels

Posted by Andrew at 2:00 AM on October 5, 2010

In “Blade Runner Revisited”, François Vautier has produced an experimental homage to “Blade Runner”, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir classic.  In creating the film, François ripped 167,819 frames from the “Final Cut” version and digitally pasted them together, making a single image roughly 60,000 pixels square.  In digital camera terms, it’s 3.6 gigapixels.

Much of the film involves floating above this giant image, zooming in on key events from the film accompanied by soundtrack and vocals from the film itself.  It’s quite stunning and slightly overwhelming, but definitely worth 4 minutes of your time.

You might want to check out some of this other films, including the ant farm in his scanner….

Three Announces Pay Per Day for 3G

Posted by Andrew at 9:55 AM on October 4, 2010

Three LogoUK-based mobile telco, Three, today announced a new pay-per-day mobile data option.  For only £2 ($3), you get a day’s worth of internet access with a limit of 500MB.  There’s no monthly commitment.

Three’s Director of Mobile Broadband, Joe Parker, said: “Three’s Pay Per Day deal is the ideal proposition for business travellers, iPad owners and students who have a fixed broadband connection at home but also want the flexibility of being able to snack on mobile broadband whilst away from their home.”

I fully agree with him.  Most of the time, I have access to wi-fi at home, at work or at client sites.  However, there have been a couple of times when I needed 3G access on my laptop for a few hours but I wasn’t going to pay the £10 ($15) for 1GB of data that expires after 30 days.  This would have been perfect and I’m sure other carriers will follow suit.

I’m already Three customer, but if I wasn’t, I’d switch just for this.

Update: Three has confirmed that the “day” finishes at midnight on the day after the purchase is made, so if you timed it right you could actually get nearly 48 hours out of your “day”.

Cyclus – A Personal Electricity Generator

Posted by Andrew at 4:32 AM on October 4, 2010

Cyclus USB charger on desktSatoshi Yanagisawa is a sustainable designer based in Farnham in the south-east of England.  He’s developed “Cyclus“, a concept for a wind-up USB charger that will give around 30 minutes juice for a couple of twists.  Based on a spring and DC motor, this is simple technology in a great design and is a far more elegant solution than other solutions such solar (photovoltaic) chargers or external batteries.  In particular, the Cyclus can be easily carried with you, doesn’t need the sun, doesn’t weigh much and is infinitely re-chargeable.

It’s certainly not the first wind-up charger but it’s definitely the best looking – this is one design concept that I hope makes it to product.

Xmarks shutting down? – Well maybe not!

Posted by Mike Dell at 9:30 PM on October 3, 2010

Xmarks (formerly foxmarks) is a bookmark plugin that keeps all of your bookmarks synced up between computers, no matter which of the big 4 browsers you use. (Firefox, IE, Chrome and Safari)  They announced in this blog post, that they were shutting down “..in about 90 days”. A bunch of users (Thousands?) were left wondering what we would use after the shutdown. Quite a few comments for that post stated that the users would pay some sort of reasonable amount to keep the service open.

So, a couple of days later, they announced that they were thinking about changing their minds (see this post) The CEO of Xmarks says:

we’re revisiting the idea of Xmarks as a premium service. We’ve set up a Pledgebank page where you can sign up if you’re willing to pay at least $10 a year for Xmarks. No credit card is required, but please only pledge if you are genuinely willing and able to pay

Go to the Pledgebank page here:http://pledgebank.com/XmarksPremium if you are interested in keeping xmarks going.

I use xmarks to keep all the browsers on all of my computers synced up and it’s the only service that is this easy to use.

Chrome and Firefox now have their own sync services but they don’t work across other browsers like Xmarks does.

CES 2011 Sponsorship Details Posted

Posted by geeknews at 12:36 PM on October 3, 2010

We are just 90 days away from the start of our coverage of CES 2011. This will be our 6th year covering the show, the team and I are really excited about what we have planned. Last weekend we finished our third planning meeting and all I can say is we are gonna rock the show.

In 2011 we will be streaming live for the very first time from a broadcast booth on the show floor and we cannot be more excited. Along with our regular floor teams we will have nearly 20 people on the floor at the show.

Over the past 30 days I have been sharing our sponsorship plan with select companies, who we have worked with in the past. While those discussions are still ongoing, we wanted to make the details of our 2011 opportunity public.

This is the opportunity of the new year that will deliver millions of impressions to those companies that we team up with. Pass on the following link to your bosses, and your marketing folks as we know that we will deliver a major home run. Tech Podcast Network CES 2001 Sponsor Opportunity.

Will We Ever See The New DirecTiVo?

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:02 PM on October 2, 2010

When I signed up for DirecTV back in 2004 I received the, now legendary, DirecTiVo (the Samsung S4040R).  I loved it.  I almost cried in late 2007 when I bought my first HDTV and “had” to give it up for a DirecTV HD DVR.  Time marches on, though, and DirecTV and TiVo were no longer partners.

TiVo joined forces with DirecTV in early 2002 with units made by Phillips, Hughes, and Sony.  Later RCA and Samsung joined in.  Then in late 2006, when NewsCorp gained control of DirecTV, They phased out TiVo in favor of another NewsCorp company, NDS, which was already manufacturing DVR’s for the European market.

In late 2008, with NewsCorp out of the picture, DirecTV again announced a partnership with TiVo.  And, since then, we have waited….and waited….and waited.  Delay after delay has been announced.  It’s really gotten to the point where DirecTV subscribers are starting to think of it as gamers think of Duke Nukem Forever!

The latest release, which was scheduled for late 2010, has apparently been pushed to early 2011.  Rumors persist that beta units are floating around, but I know of nobody who has received one and requests to DirecTV are denied.

So, is this the ultimate Vaporware?  For that matter, after reading reviews of the new TiVo Premiere, do users really want it?  The current DirecTV HD DVR (the HR23-700) has a 500GB hard drive, which is more than most other DVR’s issued by cable and satellite providers.  The software (interface) isn’t that bad either.  I am starting to think that TiVo, as much as we all pull for them, are verging on extinction.  They seriously need to get their Comcast and DirecTV boxes out the door yesterday before the battle is completely lost.

Where Will Zune Go Now?

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 8:00 AM on October 1, 2010

With the impending release of Windows Phone 7 rumored to be October 11 or 25, depending on who you want to listen to, what is being overshadowed in the next version of Zune.

A new version of the Zune software is coming pre-Windows Phone.  We do know that.  There have been some leaks about what will be in this supposed version 4.7.  It will include syncing for the new Phone and apps for said phone.  It will divide movies into DRM-free and Purchase categories.  It will track past purchases and make them available for streaming.  Biggest of all, for many users, will be the integration of Xbox 360.  Supposedly you will be able to continue a game on your phone that you saved on your Xbox.  I am sure that will be huge for the gamers among us.

What isn’t entirely clear is where the Zune hardware will go.  Will the software integration into the phone make the stand-alone Zunes disappear?  That would be a shame.  I, for one, prefer having the separate device.  Even though my phone plays media very well, I don’t want to use it’s battery for that purpose.  Microsoft already eliminated all but the Zune HD with last year’s lineup refresh.

Will they continue to sell the Zune HD, and update it’s software to be compatible with Windows Phone 7 apps (if that’s even possible)?  If they can, and do, do this then it’s a credible competitor to the iPod Touch (providing the apps are built).

It seems unlikely that Microsoft will bring back the smaller Zune version that was sold the past 2 years, even though Apple continues to get mileage out of it’s competitor, the Nano.

We are coming down to the wire now and should have most, if not all, of these answers within the next month.  I am still using, and loving, my Zune and hoping for the best here.  It seems like it may be on shaky ground though.  I won’t be shocked (only disappointed) if Zune becomes a software-only item.
