If you are looking for a program that will allow you to share one keyboard and mouse with multiple Macs, I think I’ve found the program for you.
How do you share a keyboard and mouse with multiple computers. What program do you use and do you like it?
While Google Buzz made quite a, ah…sensation, when it debuted, it seems to have become rather overshadowed now. Other than the news this week of the settlement they have reached there’s been no real, well, buzz around it. But strangely I have almost four times as many followers on there as I do on Twitter, and it goes up daily. And all of my Buzz, like those of most people I follow, is forwarded from Twitter.
All of this got me thinking about a Google property that I use a lot – Reader. One thing I like about Buzz is that when I am in Reader I can share cool articles I find to Buzz very easily. When you click the “Share” button at the bottom of a Reader article it should automatically post to Buzz for all of your followers to see. If it doesn’t then make sure it is set to Public by going into the left column and clicking “Your Stuff” and then “Shared Items”. At the top make sure that “Your x shared items are” is set to Public.
You can also allow your shared items to post to your Twitter feed via Twitterfeed. Just go to your Google Reader Shared Items page, copy the Atom feed and paste it into Twitterfeed. Then just authorize your Twitter account to sync them up.
Of course the easiest, but least high-profile way of sharing items from Google Reader is to simply click the good ol’ “Email” button at the bottom of an article and forward it along to whoever you think may be interested.
I am sure there are many other ways to share Google Reader content, but these are the simplest that I have found.
Sony have launched a series of high performance HDMI cables to meet the needs of the latest developments in audio and video entertainment, including 3D and Ethernet.
All the cables in the DLC-HE series offer:
- HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), allowing the cable to not only carry audio and video, but also data.
- Audio Return Channel (ARC), permitting audio to be transmitted in both directions.
- 3D support, for the latest movies.
- Quad Full HD, for resolutions up to 3840 x 2160.
- 48 bits per pixel colour depth, giving richer colour reproduction.
Obviously, the TV and the connected device, e.g. an AV amp, have to support these features to take advantage of the cable.
Although the press release doesn’t make it 100% clear, I believe that these features mean these new cables conform to the HDMI 1.4 standard.
There are five different cables in the range, from general purpose to premium, with variants using horizontal and vertical swivel connections. There’s also a special cable for connecting from HandyCam or Bloggie cameras that have the HDMI type C connector.
The cables come in a range of lengths from 1m to 10m. Additionally the HDMI connector body has been redesigned so that it’s easier to see which way round the cable is before trying to plug it in.

I’m sure that this will be all over the Interweb very shortly, if it isn’t already. Absolutely fantastic and really shows off the possibilities of augmented reality.
Apparently it’s test footage from an upcoming game called Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner. I’d almost buy an iPod Touch just for this.
Update: I’ve been thinking about this overnight and actually, while it’s still amazingly cool, it’s not really that good a demonstration of augmented reality. The Manhattan skyline is only the background to the action and doesn’t appear to take part in the game itself. What would be very clever would be if the TIE fights could fly behind the buildings, but I don’t think that they do, unless someone has better eyesight than me.

VidaBox today announced it’s new ThinClientV2 Media Extender. For those wondering where all of the Media Extenders have gone since the Windows Vista days – and the question is asked a LOT on the Media Center sites – here is a brand new one that is top-of-the-line.
It features eSATA, 10/100/1000 LAN, VGA, HDMi, SPDIF, and 4 UDB ports all on the back. There’s an additional 1 USB port on the side, and, on the front, it has 1 USB, 1 analog stereo, and 1 headphone jack.
It’s relatively small, measuring just 1.5″ in height and 7.44″ in both width and depth.
As for the internals, it sports an AMD Neo Dual Core processor with 2GB of DDR2-800MHz RAM and an 80GB hard drive. It accepts NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuners and PAL/DVB-T formats. It also has built-in 802.11N, as well as a built-in multi-format card reader.

While their press release states “The new ThinClientV2 design uniquely balances both performance and low cost,” I have not been able to find pricing as of yet so I can’t say if it is truly a good deal. As for the performance part of that statement I don’t doubt that it will be very fast and efficient. It has all of the bells and whistles as far as its hardware specs, connectivity options, numerous USB ports, and even a card reader. While the 80GB hard drive may seem small I don’t think that’s an issue since this device really isn’t for storage, it’s for accessing files stored remotely on an HTPC or media server. My one complaint is that they didn’t go with USB 3.0 since devices are now starting to appear for the new spec. It may have been an effort to control the price though.

There’s no doubt that Apple Macs and Linux PCs are far less likely to suffer from virus infections or malware when compared to their Windows cousins, but there’s also no doubt that newer technologies such as cross-platform scripting can lead to vulnerabilities across the board. Besides no-one wants to be blamed for passing on a virus infection as payload in a file, even if your computer isn’t actually infected.
McAfee and Kaspersky have had Mac security products for awhile and now Sophos joins the list by offering its Anti-Virus Home Edition for Mac and best of all, Sophos is offering it for free!
Apparently “based on Sophos’s flagship security software, which protects over 100 million business users worldwide”, the software has protection, detection and disinfection capabilities for viruses and malware on OS X. It will also detect Windows viruses present in files but aren’t activated. As with most Windows anti-virus products, the Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition runs in the background, scanning files on-access. I’m not a Mac user, but if I was, I’d already have Anti-Virus Home Edition downloaded and installed. Yes, I know that it’s arguable that there aren’t any OS X viruses right now, but you can bet that they’re coming and when they do, the viruses will burn through the Mac community like wildfire as most people don’t have protection. It’s free to download so what have you got to lose except a few CPU cycles?
The UK’s Information Commissioner today confirmed that Google breached UK’s Data Protection Act when the Street View cars captured personal data while collecting wi-fi network information.
As a result of this, Google will be required to sign an undertaking to take steps to ensure that breaches of the Act don’t re-occur. Google will then be audited in nine month’s time to confirm that the required policies and training has taken place. Finally, once any legal obstacles have been cleared, Google will have to delete the personal data from the UK.
Currently, the Information Commissioner does not intend to fine Google, but will take further action if necessary
The Commissioner, Christopher Graham said, “It is my view that the collection of this information was not fair or lawful and constitutes a significant breach of the first principle of the Data Protection Act. The most appropriate and proportionate regulatory action in these circumstances is to get written legal assurance from Google that this will not happen again – and to follow this up with an ICO audit.”
What’s interesting about this is that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) had previously decided not to take action against Google because the sample data shown to the ICO was considered to be fragmentary and therefore unlikely to constitute personal data.
However, Google’s Alan Eustace admitted on Google’s own blog that, “A number of external regulators have inspected the data as part of their investigations (seven of which have now been concluded). It’s clear from those inspections that whilst most of the data is fragmentary, in some instances entire emails and URLs were captured, as well as passwords.”
The Commissioner then infers that because this happened in other countries, it happened in the UK, even if most of the data was fragmentary. You can read the Commissioner’s letter to Google Inc here.
Personally, I’m pleased that Google is being held to account. Far too often it seems that big business gets away with abusing our personal information.
