Buffalo MicroStation SSD Review

Posted by Andrew at 5:17 PM on December 9, 2010

Buffalo LogoIf you’re the kind of person who has to have the fastest processor, the quickest memory and the nippiest hard drive, then you might as well stop reading this review and simply go out and buy a Buffalo MicroStation SSD. Because it’s fast. Probably not the fastest SSD out there, but in comparison to a spinning hard disk drive, it’s like a Formula 1 car racing a family runabout – no contest.

So what are we actually talking about here? The Buffalo MicroStation SSD is a 2.5″ form factor internal SATA solid state drive aimed squarely at the laptop upgrade market.  With an additional mini-USB port on the SSD and Acronis True Image software, it makes swapping the hard drive for the SSD as easy as possible.

Box contentsIn the box, you get the MicroStation SSD, a quick setup manual, the True Image DVD and a USB cable.  In your hand though, the SSD is a pretty boring lump of plastic.  An HDD is much more solid and satisfying but that’s progress for you. The model reviewed here is the SHD-NSUH256G-EU.

Let’s say you want to convert your laptop from an HDD to an SSD.  You’ve two choices.  Option 1 – rip out the HDD, stuff in the SSD and re-install Windows and all your software, then somehow copy your personal files off your old disk.  Not a great option.  Option 2.  Connect the SSD via USB, boot from the Acronis True Image DVD, clone the HDD to the SSD, swap the disks over and boot the laptop.  Job done.  It really is that simple.

You do need to set aside an hour or two to clone a 256 GB HDD and if you want more control, e.g. changing partition sizes, then you have to install the full version from the DVD.  However, it’s all straightforward.

USB PortOnce you’ve fired up the laptop, you’ll be totally amazed at how much faster it’s become.  It’s like buying a new computer!  In my thoroughly unscientific testing, with the HDD installed my laptop took about 50 seconds to get to the Windows 7 login screen from power on, of which about 10 seconds was the BIOS checks.  On logging in, it took 20 seconds to show the desktop background and a further 40-odd seconds to show the Windows Sidebar.  Basically from pressing the power button to having a working laptop takes 2 minutes.

After installing the SSD, it took just 28 seconds to get to the Windows 7 login screen, 8 seconds to show the background and only another 20 seconds to show the Sidebar.  Total time about a minute.

Launching applications was amazingly fast.  Word took about 2 seconds from clicking in the Start menu to a blank document appearing.  Sun’s VirtualBox started in a similar time. Even iTunes started in about 6 seconds. That normally takes about 18 seconds from the hard drive. It’s just stonkingly quick.

In slightly more scientific testing, hdparm -t consistently gave disk reads of 234 MB/s. By comparison, the fastest disk drive I tested performed at 98 MB/s.  On disk writes, the peak was about 140 MB/s with the average not far below that. The full technical specs for the SSD are available from Buffalo.

It may seem blindingly obvious but the other surprise was the SSD’s silence. I could only tell that the laptop was doing anything by the flickering of the disk activity light.

But easy as it is to change the hard drive for the SSD, it can be hard on the pocket. The MicroStations come in a range of sizes from 32 GB to 256 GB, with former costing £110. However, the 256 GB MicroStation SSD costs a whopping £500, so if you want speed and silence, you pay for it.

Overall, this is a great upgrade for any laptop and Buffalo make it as easy as possible to transfer your data.  But you’ll need big pockets for the big capacities.

Thanks to Buffalo Technology for the loan of the MicroStation SSD.

Xmarks Officially Announces They Will Stay In Business

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 3:46 PM on December 9, 2010

I think by now everyone has probably heard that Xmarks will not be going out of business as they had previously announced.  After an outcry from users they relented somewhat and looked into possibly becoming a pay service, as was previously reported here.  Many users, myself included, pledged to pay for the service.

Then there were whisperings of a purchase by another company.  A deal with delicious.com, Mozilla, and even one with Google were all rumored to be possible.  But, LastPass was ultimately the one to save the great bookmark syncing program.  For those wondering what that would mean to Xmarks’ future the answer came in an emailed announcement this morning.

Hello,

Thank you for your recent pledge to keep Xmarks alive. After a
near-brush with shutting down, we’re happy to report that
Xmarks has been acquired by LastPass, the leading password and
data manager.

https://lastpass.com/

The acquisition means two things for Xmarks users:

1) Xmarks will continue as the same free service that you know
and love.

2) Xmarks now offers a Premium service for $12 per year that
includes the iPhone and Android apps, advanced features, and
priority support.  See http://buy.xmarks.com/premium.php for
more information.

We hope that as an Xmarks user who pledged your support to keep
Xmarks alive, you will consider upgrading to Xmarks Premium to
gain access to these features. Your support will not only
ensure our long-term viability, but will also help accelerate
the introduction of new features and service improvements.

To upgrade to Xmarks Premium, visit
http://buy.xmarks.com/upgrade.php

We’re excited to continue providing the best data-syncing tools
out there!

Thanks,
The LastPass & Xmarks Teams

This means that Xmarks will continue to operate as it always has, and that’s great news.  It’s possible that the 2 services will eventually be merged in some way, which wouldn’t be a bad thing.  And if you were one of the ones who pledged money to keep them alive then it’s now time to listen what they have said in this email and pluck down the $12 annual fee for the premium service.

Lazyscope Review

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:07 PM on December 8, 2010

This is a review of the application Lazyscope which was release as a beta recently. There are a couple of things that I hope they fix or add in the future. The first is they need to add Facebook any more that is a must for any social media application. Something tells me that this is in their future. It is an air application, which makes it a nonstarter for a lot of people and also limit it to the desktop. Finally my biggest complaint so far is that when you close and reopen the application the feeds you added are gone and you have to add them again. This is something they definitely have to fix before going publc. If you are not afraid to try a beta application and don’t mind a few hiccups I would recommend trying this application. Below is some screen captures on how it works.

Lazyscope Overview

media_1291603222022.png

This is how LazyScope looks like when you first open it. Your twitter account information on the left hand side, in the middle are the updates and on the right hand side is where the stories open up, when you click on them.

Subscribing to Feed

media_1291603929698.png

If you pull up a story from a Web site and you want to follow that Web site rss feed, you simply click on subscribe. Now when that web site updates it will show in your stream along with the incoming tweets. You can also add feeds manually by clicking on the top plus button and just add the url.

Reading Feeds

media_1291605128719.png

If you just want to see a particular rss feed update you just click on it. Then you will just see the updates from that feed.

Viewing Content

media_1291604646773.png

To open up a story in the right panel just click on the arrow within the update. If you want to close down the right panel just click on the arrow on the far right

Posting Content.

media_1291604849329.png

There are two ways to post with Lazyscope, the first is to hit the post button and it will post with no credit to the original poster. The second way is to hit the repost button within the update and that will give credit to the original poster.

Garmin Maze Adverts

Posted by Andrew at 7:13 AM on December 8, 2010

Garmin LogoGarmin have been running a series of poster and print adverts in Europe suggesting that we’re all too busy going from A to B that we miss the interesting things along the way.  The campaign was created by the advertising group Advico Young and Rubicam. It’s very cleverly done – if you can’t see what’s going on, move back from the screen.

Verizon Releases Update For Motorola Droid X

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 1:29 PM on December 7, 2010

Verizon has released an update for the Motorola Droid X phone that adds some great new functionality.  The update is, confusingly enough, called 2.3.340.  But, despite the name, it’s not Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which was also in the news today.  This is strictly a Verizon update – or so far as I can see.  You can find it and download and installation instructions on Verizon’s Droid X update page.

Just a quick word of warning for those who don’t have a PDF reader installed – despite Verizon’s endorsement of Adobe Reader in that screenshot, I recommend using Foxit reader which is MUCH more secure and also free.

The new features and updates include:

The download and installation is pretty painless as long as you follow the instructions.  You should be back up and running in under an hour and probably well under that.

Worst Mobile Carriers

Posted by susabelle at 6:47 PM on December 6, 2010

Consumer ReportsPersonally, I think they are all pretty bad, but our friends over at Consumer Reports have released their annual report on wireless carriers.  AT&T is at the bottom again this year, dropping another six points from its low-ranking standings from last year.

Wireless users were surveyed for all major companies, including U.S. Cellular, Sprint, Verizon, TMobile, and AT&T.  U.S. Cellular was at the top of the list for user satisfaction, which included questions relating to customer service, voice and data service, problem resolution, and staff knowledge.  AT&T, the only carrier for the iPhone (and AT&T reports that half of its mobile phone users are owners of iPhones) continues to claim that its network is 20% faster and can handle more load than any other network, but as most AT&T users know, “fast” is relative.

I am an AT&T customer, but only because switching carriers at this point would be a huge, expensive nightmare (gotta love those contracts that keep you trapped).  I have been unhappy with the lack of coverage in places there should be coverage.  I often find myself with no signal, yet AT&T claims “97% coverage in the United States.”  I must live and visit the only 3% that isn’t covered, then (so far, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Colorado are the places I’m in the most, and often have sketchy coverage).

But in addition to decent coverage and data plans, which most of us expect, when we have a problem we want to be able to resolve it.  Poor customer service and lack of staff knowledge are killers when it comes to making customers happy.  Fortunately, I’ve not needed customer service often, but I, too, don’t always get the answers I need in a timely manner.  That can be frustrating and time-consuming, and time is one of those commodities not too many of us are willing to waste.

Verizon is still rumored to be getting the iPhone in early 2011, which may force AT&T to up their game to keep current customers, as well as get new ones (right now AT&T adds up to 2.6 million customers each quarter).  But then again, if the customer service and satisfaction isn’t there, there’s no reason to change in the first place.

Trojan Toolkit For Sale

Posted by Andrew at 7:10 AM on December 6, 2010

GData LogoGerman security firm G Data put out an interesting press release last month regarding the expected successor to the Zeus trojan, which infected millions of PCs and captured bank account details.  The new trojan, Ares, has a similar modular design, allowing it to be easily configured for a range of target activities.

Malware is big business and a software development kit for Ares is already available to buy on-line, either for an upfront payment of $6,000 or else on a licensing model for when modules are subsequently sold on.  There’s even a cut-down version at $850.

The developer of Ares talked about the new malware in an underground forum. According to the author,  Ares is “not focused on banking. Every copy of Ares is unique to its customer and it has the same banking capabilities as Zeus & SpyEye which can be added provided the customer wants it. I actually consider this more of a platform which is customized to each buyers liking.”

Ares Interface

Without a doubt, malware and virus writing is no longer the domain of the insecure nerd trying to prove his expertise to his peers.  This is now business, criminal business, with significant money involved. And when they catch the writer, I hope that the penalties will be commensurate.

Unless you want to be a victim, make sure you have virus and malware protection in place and keep it updated.
