EmFinders an Emergency Location Device – Service

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 9:02 AM on January 31, 2011

Todd Cochrane spoke with Harry G. Smeenk, VP of Sales for EmFinders. EmFinders makes a emergency location device, that you wear like a watch. It is made for people who are cognitively and developmentally impaired individuals. like someone with Autism or Alzheimer’s It uses a cellular based solution instead of GPS so it can work inside of buildings. Mr. Smeenk said many times the wearer will go somewhere that seems comfortable to them, which is often inside. It uses the gsm network. They talked about how the clasp is hard to open so the user can’t take it off.

Mr. Smeenk indicated that the way the system works is if an individual wearing the device disappears. The caregiver would then call EmFinder. EmFinder then activates the device and gets a signal. They then send that signal to the 911 dispatcher in the area where the signal is coming from. They also provide information about the wearer to the 911 dispatch. Normally once the signal is sent out it takes on 10-15 minutes to find the wearer. The devices cost $200 and there is a $25.00 monthly charge. It has has been in the market for only a year and is being directed toward consumers, law enforcement and senior institutions. As the population gets older these types of devices are going to become more popular.

TMS-2011-01-29 #10 Catching Up Part 1-2

Posted by geeknews at 8:51 AM on January 31, 2011

Seeing I have been on travel just about every Saturday for the past month doing a Saturday Morning Tech Show has been pretty tough. But today we spend some quality time talking about all the cool things we saw at CES 2011 along with some timely tech news.

We spent so long talking that I had to break the program up into two video files. I will try and keep it to 90 minutes on the next show.

Take the time though and watch both programs as we get pretty deep pretty quickly.

Multitouch Display

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 4:50 AM on January 31, 2011

Multitouch

Tom Newman spoke to Timo of Multitouch Display about the multitouch display they are working on. These displays are multitouch and multiuser. You can have multiple people using the display at the same time. You can put up to 14 of these displays together. This system can run on a wall or tabletop. The displays are stackable and can be movable. The displays themselves are between 32 and 42 inches. They hope to get the display down to less the 6 inches. All the displays are run through 1 PC. The system can work with Windows , Mac OS X and Linux. They will be offering SDKs for programmers. The system will take programs created in C++, Flash or Silverlight.

Right now these displays are geared toward business and large organizations. It is found in business lobbies, museums, and hotels. However they do plan toward the consumer market. Since the what is on the screen depends on the application that are being given to it. It is just a blank screen without the applications. One possible consumer usage could be for games. This is an interesting technology and will only get better and more compelling over time

The Squealer: A Remote Control Toy

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 3:28 PM on January 30, 2011

If you know a male from age 8-80 you know they like remote controlled vehicles. (Actually quite a few of us females like them too.) The more controls and the tougher they are the better. That is the idea behind the Squealer by Interactive Toy Concept. The remote controls the vehicle six different ways. It has a range of about a 100 feet. You get about 30-40 minutes of playing time off the installed battery.

You can get a second battery and change them out easily. It is tough and durable. It is built to take punishment and go over any obstacle in its path. The forward and reverse is a proportional control, the brakes are not. It can be used either indoors or outdoors. The Squealer should be available this fall. Right now the price should be between $59.00-$69.00 depending on the model. Interactive Toy Concept has a full line of RC vehicles including hornets, flying ducks and cars.

Casio Hybrid GPS Camera

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 3:20 PM on January 30, 2011

One thing that everybody wants when they take a picture today is to have the camera save the GPS information of where it was taken. Most new cameras have GPS tracking installed, which works great when you are outside. However once you go inside there is no way to keep track of your location by GPS. This is the problem that the Casio Hybrid-GPS Camera attempts to solve. The Casio Hybrid-GPS Camera figures out your last GPS point and then tracks how far you are from it and the direction you are going. Using this equation it can keep track of where you are even inside. It is set up to enable precise positioning with out the lag of other cameras with GPS installed. It also has a world atlas preloaded which can show you pictures of landmarks near by and how far away are they.

The Casio Hybrid GPS Camera has a 10x optical zoom with a 3.0 inch monitor. The auto mode can quickly determine whether its night or day, whether the background is a blue sky or a forest of trees. It also is aware if there are faces in the frame. It optimizes every setting need to take a great picture simultaneously. There is also a setting which allows you to capture panoramic images simply by keeping the shutter button pressed. The camera runs around $349.99 and was a CES Innovation Award Winner

SplashTop Remote Delivers Your Desktop to Your Tablet

Posted by Andrew at 3:16 PM on January 30, 2011

Andy McCaskey visits SplashTop and chats to Sergei about their SplashTop Remote app that allows you to see and use your PC desktop on your iOS or Android device.  Why would you want to do this? Perhaps you want to edit some Ms Office documents on your tablet while sitting in the living room. Or perhaps you want to play your favorite (Flash) game that’s not available for the iPad. Basically, SplashTop Remote allows you to use your PC by remote control (if you’ve ever used VNC, you’ll get the idea). There are two components to the setup – there’s a program that’s installed on the PC and then app for the mobile device. Naturally, there’s more info on the website.

It’s available now. $1.99 for the iPad and $4.99 on Android.

Wydeye PicsChecker Anti-Sexting App for Android

Posted by Andrew at 3:14 PM on January 30, 2011

Jeffrey talks sexting with Jeremy Witkins of Wyd Eye Software, on how their PicsChecker application can help parents keep on eye on children’s texting behaviour. It works by sending an email of all the texts and pictures sent by the phone to the parent every day. The parent can then review the content for any SMS or MMS sexting material. There’s also a web portal if the parent wants to get a immediate view of what’s going on.

It’s available for Android phones and the price point is $2-$3 per month. Check it out if you are a concerned parent.

Casio fx-CG10 Prizm Graphing Calculator

Posted by Andrew at 3:10 PM on January 30, 2011

Tom and Andy interview Mike Reiners from Casio America, who’s brought along the Casio fx-CG10 aka Prizm graphing calculator. This calculator is a long way from the 9-digit, 8-segment LCD calculators I used in my school education as the Prizm comes with a hi-res LCD color display (216 x 384 with 65k colours) making it the “first” full colour graphing calculator. There’s no touchscreen but there’s a little joypad for navigation.

You might be thinking that a colour display will munch through the batteries but Casio’s new Blanview LCD is extremely frugal and 4 alkaline AAAs will give 140 hours of typical use. Which is great because you really don’t want to run out of juice in the middle of an exam.

The video also demonstrates the use of a Flipbook, a series of photographic images which demonstrate an effect, such as acceleration or simple harmonic motion. The Prizm can then help the student understand the nature of the effect.

The Prizm won Design & Engineering Showcase Honors at CES in 2011. Congratulations, Casio.

Children today just won’t know the joy of putting in 5376606 and turning the calculator upside down.

Available now for $129.99 in Best Buy and on-line.
