The BoogieBoard from Kent Display

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 9:06 AM on January 28, 2011

The Boogie Board

Do you remember when you use to hang a white board on the refrigerator or on your door and when you wanted to leave a note you would take the pen that was always hang by a string to it and try to write a note. I say try because most of the time the marker was either dry or worn out. Maybe its a piece of paper with a pencil hanging from it. What ever the case the Boogie Board is here to replace it.

It is a light weight only 4.2 oz and very thin 1/8 of an inch thick. It uses reflective, pressure-sensitive, plastic liquid crystal display that you write on. Although it comes with a stylus, you can use anything to write on it as long it creates enough pressure. To erase the board, you simply push a button at the top of the board. This will erase the whole board, at this time there is no way to erase a part of the board.

The messages on the board can be seen best in normal room light and the writing will appear dimmer as the room gets darker. It is very durable and can be used more then 50,000 times. The Boogie Board can be found at Amazon or Brookstone along with the Boogie Board web site for as low as $39.95. Joe from Kent Display at CES 2011 also showed Andy the an electronic skin for the iPhone or iPod called the Skin-flick. The design on the Skin-Flick appears or disappears by flicking on the skin. The Skin-flick should be available later this year.

Reese’s Minis with Chris Pirillo

Posted by Andrew at 8:58 AM on January 28, 2011

Jeffrey Powers shoots the breeze with Chris Pirillo over a few Reese’s Minis, the latest offering in the Reese’s line of peanut butter cups from Hersheys.

You’re probably wondering why Hersheys came to CES to launch candy. Watch the video to find out. Frankly, it’s tenuous but it’s fun.

Love them or hate them, Reese’s Minis are available now in USA and Canada.

Why I am not going to SXSW

Posted by geeknews at 8:52 AM on January 28, 2011

First of all they need to rename the Interactive portion of SXSW to Waste of Time. What I expected from SXSW was a social experience where you met a lot of people, network and get a lot out of the conference tracks. The conference tracks last year where 50% pitch, 25% the person had no clue and 25% awesome. The evening events for the most part are so loud that if you want to talk to someone you have to yell, terrible food and bottom shelf liquor. Meeting new people is ok sp long as you self initiate a 100% of the time, 90% of the time people had their heads buried in their phones and laptops not a lot of interaction. Be prepared for a lot of looks of why are you invading my space.

If your going to cover CES as press, here is my suggestion, bring your DSLR that can record video and interview some of the upper echelon celebrities that go, do not focus on vendors or many of the unknown session speakers. You should be prepared to deal with attendees that are rude, and interrupt interviews just so they can say hello to someone they admire. The best press thing I attended was a SXSW sponsored 10 minute pitch session where 6 vendors pitched the press for 10 minutes each.

They had an exhibitor area at the show, which I was able to walk through it in about 30 minutes. From that walk through I think I stopped to talk to one company, who today is not even on the radar map. Everyone says it is the place to be, well everyone else can go, and I will read the self centered blog posts from the comfort of warm and sunny Honolulu.

My experience with SXSW last year was not worth the money spent. SXSW is very expensive from a attendee standpoint, and hotel accommodations are simply grossly too expensive as compared to standard Austin pricing. Does SXSW have some good points, sure, but overall my experience in attending the interactive portion sucked.

Ubisurfer Netbook

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:29 AM on January 28, 2011

Ubisurfer Netbook

Ubisurfer is a services where you pay for the cost of the netbook which is $250.99 and get free Internet access for up to 30 hours a month for a full year. Right now in the UK if you want unlimited access it will cost you an additional 5.99 pounds a month. The cost in the U.S. has not been determined as far as I can tell.

The Ubisurfer is made to work over wifi or 3G, you choose which one you want to use. There is no plan or activation fee. It is a 9 inch netbook and weights only 700 g. It has a screen resolution of 800 X 480 with a full QWERTY keyboard. It runs on an ARM processor, has a 1 gb ssd drive and an additional 50 gb of online storage. There is also a USB port and an SD Card slot. It uses the Datawind web browser, there has been some complaints that the browser is slow. However since you are getting the access for free I am not sure these complaints are valid.

This sounds like the perfect computer to bring to your local coffee shop, where you just want to browse the Internet, or post a couple of emails or if you are traveling and need be able to get on-line but don’t want to carry your main lap top. The Ubisurfer has been on sale for a while in the UK and uses the Vodofone network, it is just starting to be come available in the U.S. They are also expecting to put out a 10 inch netbook later this year and some tablets.

Dish Offering HD Satellite TV on the Road

Posted by Andrew at 2:29 AM on January 28, 2011

Jeffrey chats with Marcel at the Dish Network about HD satellite TV for RVs and tailgate parties. With thousands of channels on offer, even in the wilderness you can still get your TV fix.  The new pay-as-you-go subscriptions also mean you only have to pay while you are travelling and not sign up to long-term contracts.

And with the latest Winegard aeriels, it’s even possible to watch HD while the vehicle is in motion. Drivers, keep your eyes on the road, please!

Zigbee Alliance: Helps You Control Your World

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:22 AM on January 28, 2011

Zigbee logo

Andy talked to Kevin at the Zigbee Tech Zone. Zigbee tries to help people centrally and remotely control the devices in their homes and businesses. Zigbee creates a wide range of devices that work together intelligently to help you control your world. The devices work wirelessly together in a mesh network and are made to work in most western homes. They work either through ac outlet or batteries and use little power.

The devices are also created to work with the new smart meters. They include sensors/smart plugs, and displays. You can monitor your electric usage in almost realtime. This allows you to control your usage and save money over time. Zigbee not only creates products that can be used to control electric usage, but also home security, medical monitoring, home entertainment and even blind, drapery and shade controls. Zigbee continues to work with all levels of government and other industries to create a standard for these types of device.

As we use more and more devices in our homes and businesses, we need an easy way to control them both in the home or business and remotely. this is where Zigbee fits in
