SD Card Association

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 1:11 PM on February 14, 2011

SD cardAndy McCasky and Esbjorn Larsen spoke to Alisa Hicks from the SD Card Association, a standards body for SD cards. They make sure that SD cards work in all devices. SD stands for secure-digital. The cards are created with copyrights protection (CPRM) installed. So that content providers are willing to allow their creations on the cards. Right now the cards works with standard definition videos only, but they are working on a high-def version.  The association represent over 1100 members, including camera makers, card makers, card readers and others. Two years ago they increased the storage capacity of the cards up to 32 GB. At that time they said they were working on increasing the speed of transfer.

At CES 2011 the association announced the second speed increase (since increasing the capacity) up to 312 mb per sec. The speed classes guarantee a minimum write speed, not the maximum speed. If you have a class 10 card, then the minimum write speed is 10 mb per second for that card, but it could be higher. The best way to find what card is best for a device is to look at the manual.  The SD Association doesn’t issue the license for the cards that is done by a different group. The association is currently working on an SD format for digital books.

Global Caché Controlling Your World

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 1:02 PM on February 14, 2011

Andy McCasky spoke to Josh of Global Caché.  Global Caché creates modules that connect to the local network. They can send an IR blast , RS 232 signals or close contacts to control devices. They allow you to control electronic products from a smartphone, tablet devices or laptop.

Global Caché  uses an open architecture and an open API so developers can easily design applications that work with it. They have already partner with several companies who make the applications that can be installed on a smartphone, tablet or computer that use the Global Caché.  Josh showed some smaller single purpose units that run around $170.00 for wireless devices and $100 for wired. They also offer rack mount multifunction units that start around $400.00. They have a line of sensors that sense voltage, video, contact closure and give you feed back. The units have a discovery beacon, so you can just plug it into the network and it will show up. You do need to know computers and how a network works to install it correctly. Because of this Global Caché works mostly with professional installers, one of their biggest projects so far was when they were installed in the Miami Dolphin Stadium.

Do not Sell your site to the Text Link Farmers!

Posted by geeknews at 12:08 PM on February 14, 2011

Every single day, I get at least 2-3 emails from companies looking to buy text links on Geek News Central.  To date non of them have come from what I would term a valid vendor, most of them are poker sites, or some site looking to boost their page search rank. It has become so common that I send the following email in response.

“I understand your desire to purchase as you describe them targeted text links on this highly valuable website, and because you have taken the time to email me, I would like to inform you of our rates for text links. The cost is $10,000 a month, per link, with a 12 month minimum run payable in advance. All links will have the nofollow tag plus will be put in an area of the website that clearly indicates a sponsored link. Here is my paypal address to make payment”

This is usually enough to get them to go away, but some are persistent and will come back with a counter offer of $100-$500 for a 90 day run.  I ignore these responses do they really think I’m stupid.  What’s sad is that I am sure a lot of sites would sell them text links for that kind of money.

Google has specific policies for link schemes and a site risk being de-listed from the Google search engine for participating in those types of activities. Now I am not sure how I would react if someone actually took me up and deposited the money in my paypal account but at what point will link farm agents start advertising legitimately instead of wasting time trying to get me to risk all the work I have put into this website.

With the news this weekend of JC Penny getting busted doing this, it does not surprise me that 3000+ website owners sold their soul for a few bucks to help JC Penny have a banner sales season during the holidays.

So while the lure of money is great, don’t sell you soul to the text link farmers.

Tabgrip Making it Easier to Hold on to Your iPad

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 1:02 AM on February 14, 2011

Tabgrip is a device that secures to the iPad and provides a grip on all four sides. There are also legs that come out of all for grips so you can lean it how you want in both portrait and landscape mode. It makes it easier to pass the iPad and helps to keep fingerprints off the surface as you are passing it. It protects the iPad’s sides and back, while still keeping the iPad light. The iPad can still lay flat, but be suspended above the surface. It’s $50.00 but can be found on sale at both the Web site and on Amazon for as low as $35.00. Great for both home and business.

Snapstick Transfers Content From Smartphone To TV

Posted by Andrew at 12:51 AM on February 14, 2011

If you mention “TV” and “smartphone” in the same sentence, most people will think about watching TV programmes on their phone. Some people will probably think of Sling. But what if you want to do it the other way round? What if you want to see what’s on your smartphone on your TV? In that case, Snapstick may have just what you want.

Jeffrey and Esbjorn ask Balaji Krishnan, Founder of Snapstick, why you’d want move from your smartphone to your TV.

Think about it, you’re browsing away on your smartphone and you come across something that looks really interesting but it’s on the tiny smartphone screen. Wouldn’t it be great if you could watch it on the big TV screen. That’s what Snapstick lets you do – hand off content from your phone to the TV.

The Snapstick is a combination of an app and a small box that you connect to your TV via HDMI. The box runs a custom version of Firefox and what happens is that the URL of the webpage or YouTube video gets passed by the app to the Snapstick box, which then displays that webpage or video. Data isn’t actually streamed from the smartphone to the TV, just the location is transferred.

Snapstick is currently in talks with hardware vendors to embed Snapstick into media players and a trial version may be available from D-Link. If you want to see Snapstick in action, there’s a YouTube video.

YooTechPros Android Tablet

Posted by Andrew at 12:43 AM on February 14, 2011

Todd talks with Ernest Wolf, CEO of YooTechPros, creators of an Android-based tablet PC that actually looks quite good.

Using the same LG touch screen as the iPad, this tablet offers twin USB ports, a microSD slot, front- and rear-facing cameras and runs Android 2.2. It’s also slightly lighter and thinner than the iPad. Unfortunately, the model in the video is a non-working prototype but it does look good. $399 for the 16 GB, wifi version and available in the Spring.

For the germ-adverse of us, YouTechPros offers an antibacterial screen film for tablets called the iProtector for $19.99.

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 10:06 PM on February 13, 2011

Andy McCasky spoke to Maxium about their new product the Dijit. The purpose of Dijit is to simplify media discovery and control in the home. There are three parts to the application the first is it replaces multiple remote controls with one. It works with almost all major cable companies’ boxes and Netflix along with other devices. For those devices that can’t directly with the application Dijit is partnering with Griffin Technology who created the Beacon which allows infrared devices to connect to the application. The remote is highly customizable the buttons can be switch around to the user liking.

The second part of the solution is discovery. Dijit makes everything easier to find either by keyword search or by program name.

The third part of Dijit is how it makes it easy to share what you are watching on Facebook or Twitter directly from the application. The application is made for the iPhone, but will work on an iPad and an Android application is coming. The application is free and available in the iTunes, the Beacon is $79.00 and will be available soon.

Grandcare: Keeping the Senior Citizen Independent

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 10:04 PM on February 13, 2011

GrandcareAndy McCasky and Esbjorn Larsen spoke to Charles Hillman, PE of Grandcare. Grandcare goal is to help seniors stay in their home, while allowing the caregiver to have peace of mind. The system consists of a central unit similar to a TiVo box that connects to any size TV or monitor. Then a series of motion sensors can placed around the house that measure motions.

There is also a wellness system that can measure blood pressure, weight and other health measurements. The monitor has a series of buttons, that can be set by and changed by the caregiver. The buttons can be big as needed and give a tactile feed back to the senior citizen. On the buttons are pictures to indicate who or what the senior will connect to. Push a button and the senior citizen is connected with a family member through Skype or a video plays that the caregiver has chosen for the senior citizen, the possibilities are endless.

The Grandcare system is set up to prevent malware and virus, and unwanted communication to the senior citizen. It is simple to use and no computer knowledge is necessary by the senior citizen. Grandcare has distributors and dealers that install the system.

TabSafe Medication Management System

Posted by Andrew at 3:29 PM on February 13, 2011

Carissa talks with Jim from TabSafe about their award-winning TabSafe Medication Management System. Aimed at keeping an ill person at home when they would otherwise have to go into care, it not only reminds the person when to take their medication, but it also records vital readings such as blood sugar level and blood pressure, and prepares them for the physician to give a picture of wellness over time.

TabSafe is modular to cope with multiple prescriptions. For as-needed medication, it monitors the frequency of use and will prevent overdosing by refusing to dispense the medication when it detects excessive use.

The setup of the prescription regime is programmed via the TabSafe website so it can be done by the carer or the patient. If the medication isn’t taken by the patient, an alert is sent by phone to the carer.

Priced at $1099 for purchase or $50 per month rental. Available now from their website.

Hauppauge Streams Live TV To iOS

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 3:12 PM on February 13, 2011

Brice Washington, of Hauppauge, stops by to chat with Andy about streaming live TV to iOS devices via their Broadway.  In this video you will get a look at their new device that can hook to your over-the-air or cable TV service and then broadcast, wirelessly, that signal to any iOS device within range.  Just access the stream by entering the IP address of the Broadway.  Better yet, connect the Broadway to the internet and you’ll be able to access it’s stream, not just from your home network, but from anywhere in the world where you have internet access.  You can also hook other video sources, like a DVD player to it.

Retail price will be set at $199 and should be available within the next month.  Not a bad price considering all it does, and if you have an iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV then it will be pretty handy – both at home and on the road.
