Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock & Bed Shaker Review

Posted by geeknews at 11:56 PM on April 30, 2011

When the folks at Sonic Alert reached out about a month ago and asked me if I would like to review the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock and Bed Shaker I did so under one condition. That condition was that if it could get my  14 yr old out of bed in the morning, then I would declare it the best alarm clock ever made.

I am here to report that the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock & Bed Shaker is the best Alarm Clock ever made! My 14 yr old daughter is a night owl like me, and she could sleep through anything to include being an absolute bear to get moving in the morning. I have half a box full of so-called alarm clocks that even if taped to her eardrum would not wake her up. Here is what Sonic Bomb does different. The Alarm while loud 113 db comes with the “bed shaker module” thus the alarm clock is the two piece combination. On the first night I strategically placed the shaker in the middle of her double sized bed, one part touching the mattress the other touching the wood base that supports the mattress. I placed the Sonic Bomb out of reaching distance for maximum effect.

The first time it rang she took about 10 seconds to get up cussing the thing out confusion factor on here part on how to shut it off made it the comedy event of the week. The true test was three weeks in, if it could still wake her up then we would have a winner.  She has developed some strategies to try to defeat it but overall she is still getting up on her own. The folks at Sonic Bomb could improve the design just a little. Make the cable that plugs into the alarm from the shaker one that attaches via a locking knurled knob versus a plug . It is way to easy to unplug the shaker. Make the shaker cable about 5 ft longer would help as well, getting the alarm clock out of slap distance is important with a 14 yr old.

But overall this thing is better than any Big Ben any day of the week. The $42.00 price tag may scare some, but I have an annoying Seiko alarm clock that cost $50.00 that I was given as a gift in Japan 30 years ago that still is annoying enough to get me to roll out of bed.

We are getting double duty out of the Sonic Bomb because my boy’s room is next door to their sisters, and it usually motivates them to get moving as well. One thing for sure a lot less yelling to wake up is going on here in the morning. Believe me I have done everything in the arsenal and then some in the past to get the kids to roll out on their own. Someday I will talk about the bucket of water I used on my podcast sometime.

So if you have a person in your home that sleeps through anything, and hates to get up in the morning check out the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock & Bed Shaker. If nothing else you will get some good vibrations from the 113 db alarm and the pulsing of the bed shaker to start your day off with..

Hands On: Netgear WN2000RPT WiFi Extender

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 7:21 PM on April 30, 2011

Recently I received a review unit of the Netgear WN2000RPT WiFi Extender.  It’s a tool that I am surprisingly well qualified to test.  You see, we live in an old, restored Victorian and my office, and router, are on the third floor.  However, most life takes place on the first two floors, where a laptop, tablet, and smartphones are in use.  Connectivity is there, it’s just not great.  It’s a long way for a “G” router to throw it’s signal.

The WN2000RPT comes with a simple setup and simple controls.  There are 4 wired ethernet ports on the back, along with a power switch.  On the front, there are five indicators that show your current status.  Colors change from yellow to green based on connection.  Different indicators light based on what you are doing.  It’s very simple and straight-forward in use.  You can place it anywhere that you have at least a small connection to the router.

Find a place to put the extender, plug it in, and turn it on.  Once it makes a connection to your home network the LED indicator will turn green.  Use your device to connect to the extender.  Once connected you will need to open your web browser – it doesn’t matter which one you use, any web browser will work here.  It should open to the site http://www.mywifiext.net  From there the wizard will walk you through a simple set-up process.  Once finished, the network name will change to YourNetworkName-Ext.

Our laptop normally has one or two bars on the first floor – not exactly unusable, but it makes web site load times a bit slower than what they are on the desktop with it’s wired connection.  Of course WiFi can never match ethernet, but it can come reasonably close.

Once I reconnect to the Extender with the laptop I received four full bars.  Web sites loaded much faster – noticeably so.  The extender is sitting in the same room as the laptop – there was one bar when connected to the router, which is two floors overheard.  The WN2000RPT requires very little signal strength to get a foothold and boost the signal up.

To further test the difference the Netgear device could make I used an app on my phone called WiFi Analyzer.  I took a reading near where the laptop and extender were located.  The router is graphed in blue, while the extender if depicted in red.

The Netgear WN2000RPT retails for around $70 – about the same price as a good router.  If you have a relatively small home to cover  – say 2000 square feet – then it’s probably not necessary.  But, if you have larger space that you want to blanket with WiFi, and especially if your are slinging media around, then this is a must-have.  The additional signal strength this device provided was more than noticeable, as you can see in the pictures above.  It has made our first-floor devices much more useful now that we no longer need to walk around looking for the best spot for a signal.

The only drawback I found was with my phone.  While it can see, and “connect” to the extender, unfortunately Android does not support DHCP.  So, even though it “connected”, it could not use the connection.  Since the the laptop and tablet were the major devices involved in our daily home-use, this was only a minor setback.

[UPDATE: In fact, Android DOES support DHCP.  It seems that I needed to visit mywifiext.com with each device to enable, and the I was able to get it working flawlessly]

In the end the Netgear WN2000RPT proved to be more than worth its relatively minor cost.  It provided a significant signal boost and it could do so from almost nothing.  The connection was solid, never dropping out, as some WiFi can do.  And, you can pick one up online for $60-70, so it’s really a great little addition to any home that lacks a quality WiFi signal everywhere.

AT&T Dead Zones in Hawaii!

Posted by geeknews at 7:24 PM on April 29, 2011

I spend a lot of time in my car here in Hawaii and attempt to do some hands free business calls while I am mobile. It is a great utilization of my time given how bad the traffic is. Today was the final straw, I was disconnected a total of 23 times over a 150 minute period. For brevity sake, I am outlining the worst areas to be caught on the phone. I have no labeled AT&T that using the iPhone in Hawaii anytime you are mobile is now a Business Liability!

The funny thing is my wife who has a T-Mobile phone almost never gets disconnected. I guess that is why AT&T needs to buy T-Mobile, because they cannot keep people connected to their service so they have to buy a company that has better coverage and technology to protect against dropped calls. One thing is obvious AT&T cannot handle switching you from tower to the other. If you gave me a spray paint can, I could mark the areas on the highways where your cell is gonna drop the service is so predictable.

NFL ’11-Keep Up With the Draft Live

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 6:54 PM on April 28, 2011

This is a quick review of the NFL ‘11 on the [iPad], which can be used to follow the NFL draft.  On the application there are five tabs, draft live, draft tracker, teams, photos and video. The draft live tab, gives a live update of who been drafted and by what team.. It also tells you who is drafting next and the amount of time on the clock. On a side area there is NFL news headlines and the 2011 weekly schedule. On the draft tracker page you can check the players position, height, weight, college and draft grade. If you click on the player’s name you can get an expert analysis on the player. On the team tab you can choose your favorite team and then look to see what their needs are and picks by round. I would like to tell you how the photo and video pages look however I still can’t get them to come up and it been 2 minutes. Ok the photo page finally came up after about 2 minutes and it a series of pictures from the NFL, nice pictures, I’m wondering if they will update them over time.

Unfortunately the update slowness is not limited to the picture and the video pages. Every page seems to be slow to update It didn’t up the 1st two picks until they were up to the 4th pick on TV. It also keeps going black and saying no Internet Connection when I seem to be having no problem with the connection on any other application. Once it has updated who has been drafted, if I click the player to see details I get the circle of death on the draft tracker screen. In fact right now I am getting that circle on all the screens. I suspect that they were not ready for the amount of people that were going to be hitting the network from the iPad and iPhone.

I would love it if the NFL would follow the lead of the MLB and start streaming games on line and this would be a good application to do it from, once they get the bugs out. Unfortunately based on its history, I doubt they will. There are three more days of the draft the application is free for the lite version and $1.99 for the premium, so it is worth downloading, however if you expect live draft updating you maybe a little disappointed, but once the updates come there is a lot of information available

Groupon Adds Some Personalization

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 4:51 PM on April 28, 2011

Groupon has been the hottest tech company of the past year, even reportedly turning down an offer of $6 billion from Google.  They have approximately 35 million users, and I count myself among them.  If you are also among them and receive a daily deals email then you may have received a message about the new personalization options.  And, if you didn’t then you will soon.

When you click on the email’s link you will be taken to a quick 3 question “personalized deals” forum.  The forum prompts users to fill in their gender, zip code, and birth date.

The zip code seems a strange option since Groupon already has this information and uses it for the daily deals email.  As for using gender and age to target my deals I am not sold on how it will work.  After all, I am also looking for deals on things for my wife and kids.  Will Groupon recognize that my demographic may be married with children?  I guess that in the coming days I will find out since I filled out the “personalized deals” forum.  Wish me luck…

First Look – Google Docs Comes to Android

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:25 PM on April 27, 2011

Today Google finally released a Docs app for Android.  It surprising that it took this long but the fact it’s finally here has been met with a lot of fanfare.  The app allows users to create, edit, upload and share their documents.  Edits appear the almost instantly for other collaborators.  In addition to documents, users can view PDF’s and images.  You can even upload new documents or take pictures of text and use Docs’ OCR to convert it.

To get started you will need to search for and download the new app from the Android Market.  Surprisingly it’s not a featured page 1 app.  In fact, it’s not even the first result for a search of Google Docs – it’s the second.

After it’s installed and you launch the app you will be greeted with the terms of service and some brief instructions about how to use your new app.  You will need to click OK to continue, but first you may want to give a quick read-through of the tips for using Google Docs for Android.

Once you are past that then you will be greeted with main Docs screen that allows you to choose from All Items, Collections, Starred, Documents, Images, and More.  More consists of Test, Spreadsheets, and Presentations.

There’s a lot to play around with here and I will be doing so over the next few days.  It’s not a whole lot different from Docs on your PC, but there is likely to be some minor differences and stumbling blocks.  Over the coming days we will be going more in-depth with the various features and letting you know what we find and how it works.  In the meantime, if you are using it, tell us what you think in the comments.

O2 Prepares for the Royal Wedding

Posted by Andrew at 12:55 PM on April 27, 2011

As the world is gripped by Royal Wedding fever (yawn), mobile phone operator O2 have blogged about their preparations from the big day. As you might expect, there will be a few more mobile phones, texts and picture messages sent from heart of London than you’d get on an average Friday in April but what might surprise you is how much more O2 is predicting.

O2 reckon that there will be an additional 300,000 customers in the London area, each making at least one phone call, receiving four texts / picture messages and sending or receiving one email. The usage sounds a little low to me but they’re the experts. Astonishingly, they expect 327 million pictures will be taken on a mobile phone. That’s a lot.

To cope with the extra traffic, there will additional cells around the wedding hotspots such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the procession route, St James’ Park and Hyde Park, bringing the total number of cells to 283. The London network has been recently upgraded as well, so it’s going to hold up under the extra traffic – fingers crossed.

They’re also expecting people outside of Westminster Abbey to stream the wedding ceremony itself from the BBC’s iPlayer and similar services. That’ll put some load onto the 3G network, nevermind the BBC’s servers.

And to ensure that network maintenance doesn’t have any unintended consequences, O2 has locked the phone network down between the day before and the day after the event and only emergency repairs allowed. Very reassuring for the wedding watchers.

I’m sure other mobile phone providers will be doing similar things but it’s interesting to see a little of what goes on behind the scenes.
