Freecom Mobile Drive Mg Review

Posted by Andrew at 4:01 PM on May 26, 2011

The Freecom Mobile Drive Mg is no ordinary 2.5″ external drive. It’s a thing of beauty. Intended to complement Apple’s MacBooks, the slimline Mobile Drive has a magnesium body that looks and feels great. The icing on the cake is that it’s USB 3. I’ve seen lots of external drives but this is the one you want.

Even the packaging reflects the target market. Instead of a relatively dull cardboard box, this comes in an acrylic box so that you can see drive before you’ve even purchased it. The model shown here is the slimline 320 GB USB 3 version which is just 1 cm thick. Freecom have used the bevelled-edge trick to make it seem even thinner than it is but it doesn’t detract from the fact that it is thin and Freecom claim that it is the world’s thinnest external drive. In addition to the 320 GB capacity, there are two 720 GB units which are a bit thicker at 1.5 cm – one is USB 3 only, the other is USB 3 and Firewire 800.

Apart from the USB 3 connector and the Freecom logo, the only other external feature is a white LED which indicates power and disk activity. It’s difficult to make out in the picture below as it’s not lit, but it’s pretty much right in the middle. The drive is bus powered so there’s no power supply needed.

The Mobile Drive Mg comes pre-formatted with HFS+, so if you have a Mac, you’re good to go out of the box. If you’re a Windows or Linux user, it can easily be reformatted to another format.

I think we’ve established that it looks good, but does it perform? Connected up to USB 3, the Mobile Drive recorded the following data rates:

- hdparm gave 75 MB/s for buffered disk reads.
- dd gave write speeds around 82 MB/s.
- bonnie++ gave 74 MB/s for writes and 85 MB/s for reads.

Under USB 2, the figures were obviously slower but still healthy for a USB 2 device.

- hdparm gave 30 MB/s for buffered disk reads.
- dd gave write speeds around 37 MB/s.
- bonnie++ gave 35 MB/s for writes and 40 MB/s for reads.

Looking at the data, using USB 3 roughly doubles the performance when compared to USB 2, which is not unexpected. If you are interested in the specs, there’s a datasheet .pdf.

Price-wise, the model here costs 79 euros, with the 750 GB model bumping the price to 119 euros. Adding the Firewire port will cost 10 euros extra.

You know you want one.

Thanks to Freecom for the loan of the Mobile Drive Mg.

Tango TRX Bluetooth iPod Dock

Posted by tomwiles at 4:47 PM on May 25, 2011

As an over-the-road truck driver I spend dozens of hours a week listening to various podcasts while I’m driving. In the past, my company truck had a stereo that had a cassette tape player, which made it possible to use an audiocassette adapter to plug in my MP3 player directly. Unfortunately, my current truck does not have an audiocassette player or an aux in port, leaving the only choices an ineffective FM transmitter, or ear buds. I gave up on FM transmitters long ago in favor of ear buds.

Why not go for some sort of iPod dock? Well, there’s a problem with iPod docks. They may work just fine in a stable environment, but a flopping docked iPod bouncing down the road in a truck invites a broken 30 pin iPod connector in no time.

So, I got the idea of looking for some sort of stereo Bluetooth capable boombox. Since I power all of my electronic devices from a DC to AC power inverter, the ability to operate on battery power isn’t a concern.

After searching through websites such as Amazon.Com and also searching through the local Best Buy store more than once, and talking to at least two Best Buy employees, I ended up finding on my own the Tango TRX Bluetooth-capable iPod/iPad dock. I paid $150 plus tax for it at my local Best Buy store.

The Tango TRX has a pleasing sound quality. The unit actually comes with two conventional iPod docks, one built in to the main unit that houses the speaker assembly, and a satellite unit that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth back to the main unit. The satellite iPod dock is adaptable to any generation of iPod device provided it has the standard 30-pin iPod connector.

More importantly to me, the Tango TRX will also connect to any device that has stereo Bluetooth capability. I am able to easily pair it with my iPod Touch as well as my Android Evo smartphone without having to enter the typical “0000” pin code so common to Bluetooth devices. It will simply connect automatically. Interestingly, the Tango TRX will also function as a speakerphone since it also comes equipped with a built-in noise-cancelling microphone specifically for that purpose.

There’s also a free Tango TRX iPod/iPhone/iPad app that gives additional functionality in the form of a 5 band graphic equalizer, as well as iPod remote control functionality. The unit comes with its own small infrared remote control.

The Tango TRX works extremely well in my truck. It has plenty of volume and does not distort at higher volume levels. It solves the problem and frees my ears from endless hours of ear bud purgatory.

Freecom Data Bar XXS Review

Posted by Andrew at 12:10 AM on May 25, 2011

If you are looking for a Father’s Day gift, then you might want to take a look at the Freecom Data Bar XXS. As you might guess from the XXS, it’s a tiny little USB memory stick. My measuring says that it’s just 2.5 mm deep, 12 mm wide and 31 mm long – it’s basically the same size as the USB socket, only longer.

Because it’s so small and easily misplaced, the Data Bar comes with a keyring lanyard and the little silver barrel (see picture) unscrews to easily detach the memory stick when you need to use it. The Data Bar is also waterproof and dustproof, which is handy because anything this small is bound to go through the wash at some point.

Performance-wise, bonnie++ reported write rates at around 13 MB/s and using dd, it came in around the 15 MB/s. Remember these figures will be specific to the particular setup used but should be indicative of the Data Bar’s speed. The Data Bar XXS tested was the 2 GB version.

Available in fashionable white and in 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB sizes, prices start at 9.95 euros going up to 79.95 euros. If you want small, they don’t come much smaller than this.

Thanks to Freecom for the review unit.

Miro 4.0

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 7:29 PM on May 24, 2011

Miro just came out with version 4.0. and its a clear hit. If you believe in supporting open source application, you have to try Miro. Miro is a open-source music and video player. It has been around since 2005 and was originally known as the Democracy Player. It is a part of The Participatory Culture Foundation a nonprofit foundation. You can use it download, watch, and listen to video and audio podcast. You can also add sites such as YouTube and Ustream and watch them within Miro. It is available for the Mac, Windows, and Linux.

With the newest update to Miro 4 it has become even better. The ability to buy mp3 and applications directly from the Amazon or the Google store within Miro has been added. Music stored in your Amazon Cloud Player can also be played within Miro. You can also add your iTunes music and movie library to Miro. Adding these libraries to Miro has no effect on ITunes, Miro simply points to the appropriate folders. If you have an Android device you can convert and sync music and applications to these device from Miro. I can see Miro being use with any Android device as iTunes is used with iOS devices. You can play almost any video format within Miro including HD video.  You can also use Miro to convert videos into mp4/h264 formats which are playable on most portable devices. If you have Miro installed on multiple computers within the same network you can now stream and transfer media between these computers. YouTorrent is built right into Miro and is really fast. You also have access to media that is available from ClearBits which provides hosting and distribution for open license media.  These are just some of the features that are available within Miro.

When upgrading from Miro 3.5 to Miro 4 I did run into a problem, when I added my ITunes library. It imported the library itself rather quickly, however it did take awhile to import the metadata. In fact it froze up a couple of times, if you have a slower machine like mine (Mac Mini 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo) I would recommend deleting the application and then downloading Miro 4. This seemed to fix the problem. Before you do this make sure you export your podcasts as an opml file, so they are easy to add back in. I have been using Miro since before it was Miro and I have always liked it, and it gets better with each version.

Android 2.3 Coming to Droid Pro, Droid 2, and Droid X

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:41 PM on May 24, 2011

If you are a user of the Droid Pro or Droid Global and have had problems with corporate sync, the Motorola has a fix rolling out for you – it’s called Android 2.2 Gingerbread.  According the Motorola’s own support forums a company rep has stated that the problem will be fixed with the upcoming Gingerbread update.  The post, made May 23 at 4:49 pm has since been edited.  Here is the original:

A test version has already been rolled out to a few lucky Droid X users (I am not one of them).  That means it’s likely that it will be the first to receive the update, perhaps as early as May 26th, according to other rumors floating around.  We have also heard that the Droid X Gingerbread build has been approved by Verizon.  The other devices will likely be close behind.

After Verizon rejected Motorola’s first build it looks likely, providing testing goes well, that it will be a go this time.  As soon as it hits we will have screenshots and and update right here.

Boxee Opening European Office in London

Posted by Andrew at 12:19 AM on May 24, 2011

Following on from the previous post, Boxee have announced that they’re opening a European office in London. In an email to Boxee users, they said that Wil Stephens will be setting up shop to bring more content to the UK audience and will be working with D-Link to get more boxes into more stores. They’ll also be hiring staff so watch their Twitter feeds and Facebook pages if you are interested.

And to celebrate, Boxee is having a meet-up on 7th June in East London at an undisclosed bar. It’s an RSVP affair (and £5 in) but they’ll be showing off some new content partners and giving away some Boxees. And if you can’t make it in person, it’ll be streamed live on the Boxee as well.

Is Premium Content Coming to Boxee?

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 6:09 PM on May 23, 2011

Any questions about where Boxee may be heading could have been answered with the latest user survey.  The questions surround premium content that it seems they are thinking of making available to users.

What kind of premium content?  The best kind – pay-per-view, sports, and premium channels like HBO.  The gist of the survey surrounds what users are willing to pay for this type of content.  They are even floating the idea of NFL games on PPV – in fact, that’s the one listed in the survey.  In terms of premium channels, HBO and Showtime are names.

So, can they pull off actually adding such content?  HBO and Showtime are a possibility, but the NFL seems much more difficult, especially since they have a deal in place with DirecTV for Sunday Ticket.  It’s not out of the question, just a more difficult negotiation.  I have been waiting for this – a pay-per-view game is long overdue.  There’s seriously no reason for anyone to buy EVERY game of EVERY team in order to watch one team’s games.  It’s much more economical to pay for your game than to pay for DirecTV (plus Sunday Ticket).

Here’s hoping……….

Quirky – Social Product Development

Posted by Andrew at 3:42 PM on May 23, 2011

I love these entrepreneurial websites such as Kickstarter. It’s a vicarious pleasure in seeing other people’s ideas and helping these people succeed by investing in their products. I found a new one today – Quirky – which I think takes the idea development to the next level. Quirky refer to it as a “A Socially Developed Product (TM)” and they help you take a product from the idea through product development to production and sales.

Here’s Quirky’s product development process.

The Quirky Process (courtesy of Quirky)

What seems to be unique about Quirky (and to be fair, I haven’t exhaustively researched the topic) is that part of the process is to encourage feedback from Quirky members to improve the product. They call it “community curation”. It’s a great idea especially if it leads to better products.

Taking it further, Quirky has this notion of influence. You earn influence by submitting ideas or commenting on products, and influence converts into a proportion of the profit from those objects that you worked on. The explanation is a bit opaque in places and I’d be interested to see what sort of money people make but it seems to be way to reward everyone who helped make the product a success.

There are some really interesting products on the site and the one that currently has my eye is the Converge docking station. It’s probably less docking station and more charging station but it looks great and solves a problem that many of us have.

The Converge is in pre-sale and so far it looks like it has garnered only 69 orders out of the 1300 needed to put it into production, so I don’t know how many products actually make it from pre-sale to production.

Overall, I like the idea and I’ll be following along but with all of these things, exercise caution. If you’ve got a great idea, it might be an excellent place to get a product into the market. But you need to read the small print and understand ownership of the intellectual property and design, your portion of the profit and so on – I haven’t delved into any of these things yet. If you aren’t happy, walk away.
