REVIEW: Jabra Freeway Hands Free Bluetooth Speaker

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 8:35 PM on June 19, 2011

I have an older car – with no Bluetooth and definitely no MP3 player. It hasn’t been a big deal – I have been using my iPhone through a device that sends an FM radio signal. But now I can take all those wires away and use this Jabra Freeway Bluetooth speaker. A pretty impressive device that was awarded the best of CTIA wireless in 2011.

The Good Stuff – Jabra Freeway

Let’s answer the “What is the FM button for” question. Well, it simply turns this device into a FM tuner. You can listen to the voice through the built-in speaker, or through the radio on a tuned frequency. Great for if the whole car needs to hear a conversation.

The Jabra Freeway charges on a Micro-USB plug. The device can be affixed to the visor of your car (or wherever you want to put it). Turn the power on and you hear a voice say “Jabra on – Ready for pairing”.

The pairing process on iPhone is pretty standard. Turn on Bluetooth and choose the Freeway. Key in the pin (if necessary) and the device will pair.

When you have to answer a call, just hit the button with the phone receiver on it. Need to hang up – do the same. Volume buttons on the bottom to turn up and down the audio and a mute button if sirens are piercing outside.

Even though it’s pretty big for a Bluetooth hands-free unit, the contour does make it work so you can place it on the visor without blocking the vanity mirror. However, the speaker will also do double-duty. Whereas most hands-free units only take the phone calls, you can play music right through this unit. Turn on the FM button and your music will transfer over.

Like most units nowadays, you can charge in a couple hours and be on standby for days. Even with moderate to heavy usage, you might have to re-charge once every 6-7 days.

Since the unit is most likely right above your head, I can talk to someone while my windows are rolled down. Everyone I talked to through the unit has said there was no issue in hearing me. That is the best test of the Jabra Freeway.

The Not So Good Stuff – Jabra Freeway

I wasn’t completely impressed with the speakers in the unit. There was a noticeable clip (a buzzing sound) when I was listening to either music or someone talking to me with the volume around 70-80%. I had to turn down the speaker a bit to make the clipping sound go away.

The devices’ wire clip to the visor causes a bit of concern – especially since this is a bigger unit. If I am driving down the highway with the windows rolled down, then get a blast from the sun – causing me to whip the visor to the side window – I could see that unit go flying into the cross-traffic. A piece of velcro could be the answer, since I don’t see a person moving this unit around too much.

There are a lot of voice commands in this unit. Other hands-free units let me say “Call – [person]” once I press the button. You have to learn the commands – although by asking for help, the unit will give you a list of options.

There is no pause or stop button for the music. You have to press voice and then say “Pause”. Would have been better with just the button.

The Verdict

It does have a couple flaws, but the device is pretty good. This is a unit that sells for $129.99, so the price might be the tipping point to saying no. After all, I don’t need a device to play my iPod music as much and I can get a hands-free bluetooth unit for $50 or less.

If the Freeway was to drop below $100 and fix the speaker clipping, then it will be worth it. Otherwise, if you need a nicely designed unit with a larger speaker, then the Freeway is for you.

Disclaimer: I did receive a unit from the company. This is a unbiased review of the Freeway.

Apple Releases a new iPad 2 TV Ad

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 6:59 AM on June 19, 2011

This weekend Apple began airing a new iPad 2 television ad.  The ad is called “Now” and it shows a mix of built-in features and third-party content is on display, including FaceTime, the iBookstore, and iTunes U as well as Spin, Star Walk, The King’s Speech, and The Wall Street Journal.  The announcer explains how iPad makes it possible to such things as “watch a newspaper” and “listen to a magazine”.

It’s a clever little ad that shows off some of the tablet’s best features.  No doubt it will get plenty of airtime over the coming days and weeks.  As with previous iPad ads, this one doesn’t give hardware specs as some of the other tablet competitors are doing.  That’s a wise move, as it keeps rivals from being to effectively use pure hardware specs to compete.

You can check out the ad below.

Get the +1 Lowdown from Google Themselves

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:00 PM on June 16, 2011

If you are wondering about implementing the new Google +1 button on your website, but worried about the proper way to do it, then you may want to free up your calendar next week.  Google has announced they will be holding a special, open-to-the-public webinar on Tuesday 21st at 3pm ET.  This should go a long way towards clearing up some of the misconceptions and unknowns about exactly what +1 can and can’t do for a web site.  For instance, there is a lot of speculation about +1 being a boon for SEO by raising the search ranking of pages.  But, Google can be very particular and very unforgiving about how their apps are displayed on sites – often banning users from Adsense for unknown reasons.

Google claims they will answer such questions as “how do you make sure this experience is user friendly? Where should you position the +1 button? How do you make sure the correct URL is getting +1’d?” The webinar will be conducted by Google Developer Advocate Timothy Jordan.  He will cover “technical implementation details as well as best practices to ensure the button has maximum impact.”

You will need to register for the event, which you can do here.

If you don’t, or can’t, attend then you can find some good information on +1 embedding code over at this unofficial Google blog.  If you just want automatic imtegration of +1 along with other sharing buttons like Twitter and Facebook, among others, then check out Socialize plugin for WordPress, which has already done an excellent integration of +1.

Jail Breaking iPhone 4.3.3

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 4:45 PM on June 14, 2011

First I don’t recommend you do this unless you have a good reason, although it is not illegal Apple does frown upon it. Also there is a possibility that something may go wrong. However there are very good reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. In my case it was a broken Home button, at first I could get it too work if I tapped on it about 10x, however yesterday it stopped working all together. In order to go to the home screen I literally had to shut down the iPhone down and then restart it. I can hear you now, you should take that to the Apple Store to get fix. Unfortunately the nearest Apple Store is three hours away and since this is our only phone it is not very convenient to send it back to Apple for repair. I read that under Cydia there was a way to have one button substitute for another, which is exactly what I was looking for. The problem is you have to jailbreak your iPhone in order to install Cydia on it.

I then started searching for a way to jail break an iPhone 4 that has iOS 4.3.3 installed on it. When looking for jail breaking options make sure you find the one that works with your iOS version and is untethered. Any time Apple does an update, there is usually a gap before the corresponding jailbreak becomes available. There is a really good article on the difference between a tethered and untethered jailbreak and why the untethered is better at the iPhone Download Blog. Unfortunately while searching I discovered that all the programs available to jail break iOS 4.3.3 required a working Home button, which I didn’t have. I tried to find a work around by googling the problem, without success. I then decided to try a method that had worked before for me, and that is to use an electric heating pad. If you lay the iPhone face down on the heating pad and heat it up a little, (use with extreme caution) that seems to fix the Home Button temporally. This allowed me to jail break the iPhone using Redsn0w. Redsn0w installs Cydia automatically. Within Cydia there is a program called Activator, which allows you to substitute one button for another, which is what I was looking for.

Remember jail breaking is not without risk, so before you do it make sure you back up your iPhone. Also when Apple does an update, you have to wait until someone jailbreaks it before you upgrade. Have you jail broken your iPhone, if you have why?

Phantom AOL eMail

Posted by susabelle at 7:34 AM on June 14, 2011

I’m still getting mail from dead people.  An AOL account belonging to a friend of mine who passed away almost three years ago has been hijacked and sends me at least one spammy email a day.  I tried to block her emails using my spam blocker, but some still get through.  She had three or four AOL email addresses, and all of them send me spam email.

Now I’m getting spam email from a mechanic I used a few years ago.  The same type of spam email, and I’ve tried to call him, but he appears to be out of business.

But good old AOL, they aren’t out of business, and they never delete email addresses in their system, so I’m destined to get multiple emails a day from these defunct accounts.  And seriously, mail from the dead is just creepy!  AOL doesn’t seem to be responsive to requests to shut down these accounts (I’ve tried that) and they don’t even want to talk to you unless you have an AOL ID to sign on with.  There is no way I want to sign up for an AOL account just so I can complain about another AOL account.

Short of turning on blocking, spam filtering, etc., what is the solution?  How many of millions of AOL (or Yahoo, or Hotmail) email addresses are really defunct, but still sending out spam email because they’ve been hacked?  And why does it seem so hard for these emails to get turned off or deleted?  I sure wish I knew the answer.
