Is There an Amazon Android Tablet Coming?

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 2:05 PM on July 8, 2011

Rumors are making their rounds on the internet that Amazon will be releasing their very own Android tablet sometime in the third quarter of this year (which could be tomorrow or September or anytime in between).  In fact, today I even saw projected sales numbers – 1.2 million shipments in the first 3 months.  So what is actually known about this release?  NOTHING!  Amazon still is mum, so it’s all speculation.  Still, with the success of the Kindle, Amazon has proven that they can enter a hardware market and make a strong run.

Given the Amazon initiatives into the tablet and smartphone market with apps for Kindle, MP3 store, Video Store, and music cloud, it seems like a no-brainer for them to release their own devices.  Amazon also seems poised to make the biggest splash since Apple.  They have more behind them than any other tablet maker.

Reliable rumors say that Amazon will be releasing two devices, but all we really know about them, at this point, are code names – Coyote and Hollywood.  We assume this means two different size tablets, as opposed to a tablet and smartphone.  Perhaps 7″ and 10″?  We have also heard that one would run the Tegra-2 processor, while the other will sport a Tegra-3.  So, perhaps, they will be the same size and vary between entry level and pro devices?

That’s a lot of questions and absolutely no answers.  All indications point to these rumors being based in fact, though, so I assume we will find out more pretty soon.  So, would you buy a tablet from Amazon?  Do you think that Amazon entering the tablet market could mean real competition for Apple?

Google Docs Adds New Features for Videos

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:20 PM on July 7, 2011

For as long as I have been using Google Docs you have been able to play videos from within it.  But, now, according to Google, “you can now insert your videos into Google Sites, embed them anywhere on the web, and caption them for your viewers.”

Google Sites has added “Google Docs Video” to it’s insert menu, to go along with Google Video and YouTube.  From within Google Docs you will now be able to get an embed code, just as you can on a YouTube page.  The code will work exactly the same embed code does from other video services.  Finally, you can caption videos to make them more accessible for the hearing impaired.  This has the added bonus of creating a transcript of your video, which will make it available from within search.  According to the Google announcement you can “give it a try, choose Manage caption tracks from the Actions menu for your video, then click Upload caption track… Anyone who has edit access can upload a track.”

There is mention of a gradual roll-out, as these Google releases frequently have.  So, it should be available for everyone right now.  To check it out you can just visit the Google Docs site.

“News of the World” Phone Hacking Scandal

Posted by Andrew at 3:45 AM on July 7, 2011

News International today announced that this Sunday’s edition of the News of the World newspaper would be the last edition and that the newspaper was closing down. Ostensibly the reason is that a phone hacking scandal had a irretrievably stained the name of the newspaper but the suspicion is that there’s far more to the closure.

For non-UK residents, it’s an astonishing story that involves several alleged crimes and some disgraceful behaviour. First of all, News of the World (NOTW) is one of the biggest selling Sunday newspapers with around 40% of the market and 2.8 million readers. It’s been going for 168 years and while considered a tabloid paper, it has been instrumental in revealing other scandals involving politicians and other well-known figures.

The scandal itself is that around six years ago, a private investigator used by the newspaper is alleged to have hacked into the voice mailboxes of over 4,000 people, including royal aides, sports stars, celebrities and politicians. Even worse, it is further alleged that the mailboxes of soldiers killed in Iraq and murder victims were hacked into. In particular, the alleged deletion of messages on Milly Dowler’s phone is suggested to have given hope to her parents that she was still alive when she had been killed.

Rumours of the hacking arose when the newspaper published stories that could only have been discovered from personal messages. The private investigator and the journalist involved were sent to prison back in 2007 and at the time, a police investigation suggested that the two individuals involved acted alone. In 2009, the Guardian newspaper claimed that thousands of mailboxes had been hacked and that the practice was well known and routine. The Metropolitan Police refused to re-open the investigation. It has also now been alleged that NOTW made payments to the police in return for information. The hacking of the mobile phone’s voice mail was not sophisticated. The private investigator simply relied on the fact that most people did not bother changing the default PIN on their voice mailbox.

Over the past week, as the revelations of the alleged hacking continued, public opinion turned against NOTW. Major advertisers in the paper withdrew their contracts, unwilling to be associated with the unfolding scandal. It was perhaps inevitable that the NOTW would have to close but it seems harsh to punish the current staff for the activities of their predecessors.

The intrigue continues as the parent company, News International, is keen to buy out the remaining shares in BSkyB. However, this had raised concerns that one single company would own too much of the UK media – News International owns the The Times too. The suggestion has been made that by closing one newspaper, NOTW, this will reassure the regulatory authorities but there are also now questions about whether News International is fit and proper to take over BSkyB. It is rumoured that News International will launch a Sunday edition of a sister newspaper The Sun. The domains “TheSunOnSunday.co.uk” and “TheSunOnSunday.com” were registered two days ago, though it’s not clear by who registered them

It’s an amazing scandal and totally despicable – some of the stuff you couldn’t make up. If there’s one thing to be learnt from the scandal, it’s make sure you change the default PIN on your mobile phone’s voice mailbox.

Amazon Takes on Google in the Cloud Music Market, Doesn’t Impress

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 8:10 PM on July 6, 2011

Amazon came first with the cloud music storage service, but Google tried to trump them.  While I never tried out Amazon Music because I just didn’t find it compelling enough, I have been test-driving Google Music for a couple of weeks now.  Why did I find it more alluring?  Storage space!  Now Amazon is upping the ante, though.

While Google has no paid plan and no space limit, simply offering 20,000 songs of storage, regardless of file size, Amazon now has a different, but  also intriguing, plan.  It does come with one important, and potentially deal-breaking, caveat – you have to buy the music from the Amazon MP3 Store.  The unlimited storage they are advertising is for music you buy FROM them.  Although, if you already have an account, and have uploaded a bunch of non-Amazon purchased music you will also have unlimited storage….for a limited time.  How limited remains to be seen.

If you are wondering just how much space 20,000 songs takes up, well, I can’t say for sure, it varies based on your file type and encoding.  However, I can say that my 11,000+ songs (most at 256 KBPS) total approximately 90 GB.  That’s only slightly more than half of the number of songs that Google Music is willing to store in the cloud at no charge.

I am a big fan of Amazon and a regular customer, but for now I am happy with my choice of Google Music.  Amazon will need to go a bit beyond today’s announcement to sway me.  With this market still being new and just starting to heat up, though, I expect that they will be forced to compete with, not only Google, but the upcoming Apple threat as well.

White Noise

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:03 PM on July 6, 2011

http://f.cl.ly/items/3z3u0T383k2o1u2o2h3O/Untitled.pngI have to admit I am one of those people whose mind starts racing right about the time I am ready to fall asleep. Which leads to me staring at the ceiling not being able to sleep. I think this is not uncommon, especially if you work in tech and keep odd hours or are working on a project.  I have taken sleeping pills before, but I  don’t like them. When I do use them I usually wake up groggy and out of sorts.  I use to have an alarm clock that had some various smoothing nature sounds and white noises and I really liked it. Unfortunately it got broken during a move and I couldn’t find a replacement for it that I liked and could afford, until now. What I found was an application that is available for both the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad it is White Noise Pro by TMsoft. . It has 40 ambient sounds, including those from nature, city noises, white noises and others. You can set it to play a single noise or combine noises together to create a mix. My favorite mix is a cat purring, fire, brown noise and a heartbeat. You can set it to play for a specific time period or to a specific hour. When it stops you can have it play an alarm, music from iTunes, or a different mix. You can have the alarm or music fade in from 10 seconds up to 5 minutes. One of my favorite aspects of this application is that when you hit sleep all you see is a digital clock, which you can dim to your liking.

I know  a lot of people who use this application not only for sleeping, but also while traveling on a plane or train to help relax. I have tried a couple of other similar applications, but White Noise is the best of them all in my mind and has everything I want. There is a lite version you can try for free. The pro version of White Noise is available for $2.99 in the iTunes store. For me this application is in my top ten must have applications for the iPhone or iPad.

What Do You Love?

Posted by Andrew at 3:15 PM on July 4, 2011

While Google+ may have been making most of the headlines, Google also introduced “What Do You Love” at www.wdyl.com. It’s a way of searching Google services such as Maps, YouTube, News, Patent Search, Blogger all at once will the results presented together.

The user interface is much as you’d expect.

The results are displayed on a single page broken up into applets showing the individual returns from each service.

Let’s say you love kittens – who doesn’t? The results for a WDYL search for kittens is shown below.

You can easily dismiss it as superficial – who cares about the popularity of kittens on the web – and the name WDYL doesn’t help. But if you were wanting to get an idea of emerging trends, say democracy in the middle east, you can see what’s happening along with (mostly) relevant books and videos from YouTube. The more you experiment with it, the more you get the feeling of how powerful a tool it is for research. There’s nothing that you couldn’t have done yourself, but by presenting everything together you can start to see synergies.

WDYL isn’t going to replace standard Google search, but if you want to go a little bit further and search beyond text, give it a try.
