There will be some bugs to work out like any new show but I hope that you enjoy the first episode. I’ll get things fully dialed in for show #2. A Couple of Applications for Independence Day

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 3:53 PM on July 2, 2011

FireWorks The 4th of July is coming up here in the U.S. on Monday, which of course means a lot of parades and firecrackers. Unless it rains, which of course somewhere it will. If it does rain in your area there are a couple of iPhone and iPad application, that may help some. The first application is called Firework Arcade by Mike Newman. This is a free app, with ads although if you pay .99 cents you can get rid of the ads. It has two modes a gaming mode and a show mode. The gaming mode has 5 versions you can play, Spark Samurai, Zen Warrior, Minefield, Spark-A-Mole and Someone Said. They all have the same basic premise swipe or tap the fireworks to make them go off before they disappear from the screen, but watch out for the bombs. The faster you go the more points you get. You also get points by popping multiple fireworks at a time. This method has been used in many games it is easy to understand and rather addictive. If you just want to watch some fireworks just hit the Firework Show on the menu and sit back and relax.

The second application is more for information and learning it is Declaration, There is a copy of The Declaration of Independence you can read. A picture of the Declaration on parchment and an engraved copy of the Declaration of Independence. It also has a short biography of all the signers of the Declaration. A brief history of its creation and how it was publish. There is also a copy of the famous picture by John Trumbull of the signing of the Declaration and some information about it.

I know these applications have little to do with technology, but on The Fourth of July things should be about fun and if you learn something along the way thats ok too.

WordPress Launches First Visual Editor App for WebOS

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 2:43 PM on July 2, 2011

WebOS is the most underrated mobile operating system on the market.  It has everything but a large user-base.  So, it seems a bit strange that WordPress has chosen it to be the first recipient of their new visual editor app.  Android, with the largest market share, would have been a no-brainer, iOS would have seemed logical, and Windows Phone would not have been a major surprise (Microsoft has been know to throw some money the way of developers for things like this), but it landed on WebOS.

WordPress already has rudimentary apps available for Android and iOS, but they lack the power and functionality of the WebOS release.

The WebOS WordPress app uses sliding panes to navigate between various sections and editors.  You can easily edit text, add media, and get a preview of what your post will look like before publishing it to a website.  You can not only moderate comments on your posts, but also get notifications when new comments arrive through the WebOS’s native notification system.

The app supports both WordPress.com hosted sites and self-hosted sites also.  WordPress for webOS is a free app and is available for the HP TouchPad through HP’s App Catalog.  You can watch a walk-through video below.

Security: The Weakest Link

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 7:32 PM on July 1, 2011

In one of my more paranoid moments  last month I started using Google’s 2 step verification. Now anytime I want to connect an application or Web site with my Google account I not only have to enter my user name and password, but also a code that is sent to my iPhone. For those applications that don’t take the codes, Google generates application specific passwords. Having listen to Security Now for over 306 episodes I have no doubt this method is more secure then just a user name and password. Well, it would be if I was willing to stick with it, but to be honest I probably will not. It would be all right if I was using it on sites that I thought needed extra security on like shopping, bank and other similar sites. However do I really need two step verification for a site like Goodreads, at that point it just becomes annoying. I have a choice to make I can be secure but constantly annoyed or less secure but happier. I sure you can guess which road I am headed down. I do not think I am unique either I think I am pretty normal. Lets face it most of us want to be secure on-line, we just do not want to work to hard at it.

The problem with most security methods is the better they are the more difficult they are to use.  I do not care how great your security system is, if it is not easy for people to use it is useless. It needs to be as effortless as possible. The more effort it takes to use it the less likely users are to stick with it. Unfortunately the more human friendly security is the more likely it is to be insecure. Security and ease of use tend to work against each other. Somehow we need to find the middle ground between security and ease of use, and as more of our information resides in the clouds this becomes more and more important.
