Adobe Rolling Out Connect Mobile 1.7

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 4:57 PM on August 23, 2011

Yesterday, Adobe announced the release of Connect Mobile version 1.7.  The Android version is now available, and the Blackberry and iPhone versions are coming soon.

If you aren’t familiar with Connect Mobile, then here is a brief introduction.  Adobe Connect is a web conferencing tool, geared mainly towards business users.  In other words, it’s mostly an enterprise tool.  It allows businesses to hold training classes and meetings online, thereby saving the cost of paying travel expenses for those involved. It’s based on Adobe Flash (like most Adobe products) which allows it to be used for richer content.

For enterprise level deployment they offer several tiers of hosted plans that I won’t bore you with the details of here.  If, however, you are interested in it individually, then you have two options.  The first is a $45 per month subscription, which gets you 9 hosts and allows each host to control webinars with up to 25 in attendees.  The second is a pay-per-use plan, which will cost you $0.32 per user per minute.  You can check enterprise and individual plans here.

You can download version 1.7 for Android from the Android Market.  Keep and eye on the Blackberry App World and iTunes App Store for those versions to show up in the very near future.

Ford and Toyota Agree to Collaborate on Developing a New Hybrid Power Train

Posted by geeknews at 8:30 PM on August 22, 2011

http://www.thefordstory.com/assets/1160/?w=519&h=315 Today August 22 Alan Mulally Ford Chief Executive Officer and Toyota President Akio Toyoda agreed to a memorandum of understanding to share information on the development of a new hybrid power train. One of the biggest problems with today’s hybrid trucks are their expense. Toyota is an acknowledge leader in the area of hybrid technology. While Ford is a leader in truck manufacturing, the Ford F150 being the best-selling truck in the US. By working together they hope to take advantage of their separate areas of strength to produce hybrid trucks that are affordable without losing capability. They will work together on the development of the technology, but will use the resulting technology to build their own systems to integrate within their vehicles. By working together they hope to take advantage of their separate areas of strength to produce hybrid trucks that are affordable without losing capability. The development of hybrid technology for trucks is necessary to met proposed fuel economy standards of 54.5 mpg by 2025. Derrick Kuzak, Ford Chief of Product Development answered some questions about this subject on this video.

The two companies also agreed to work together on their existing telematic systems standards and technology. They hope to create a safer, more secure and consumer friendly in-car telematics system. Ford currently has the MyFordTouch and SNYC, while Toyota uses G-Link, G-Book and a new system called Entune. They are only working together on the technology and standards and will continue to develop their own products and systems. This is just a memorandum of understanding and a full agreement will not be signed until next year. Toyota and Ford still remain competitors, but working together in this case make sense to both of their bottom lines. It will be interesting to see how far this cooperation goes and if creates a successful product in the end for either company.

Crushing Demand for HP TouchPad in UK

Posted by Andrew at 4:37 PM on August 22, 2011

It’s been an insane day and evening here in the UK if you were interested in HP’s TouchPad firesale. Rumours persisted throughout the day as to when various on-line retailers were going to cut the prices and there was disbelief that the prices were going to be as good as the US $100. Word leaked out that it was going to be £89 for the 16 GB and £115 for the 32 GB but no-one was ready to believe it.

The DSG group stores blinked first with Dixons, Currys and PC World all selling out within minutes, but the price had been confirmed as true. Carphone Warehouse then dropped their prices and within minutes were totally crushed under the load and the website went offline. Comet came on next and were slammed but many people managed to get orders in by refreshing the browser. I managed to snag a 32 GB one to upgrade my 16 GB but it took me an hour to get through all the steps. Amazon seemed late to the party with just the 16 GB on offer but also sold out pretty quickly.

No doubt more stores will drop their prices tomorrow and there will be another frenzy. HP.com is still to drop its prices and they should have a pile. The Pre 3 may also come to the firesale as well and I’ll snap one up if I can. But it tells you one thing…people are hungry for tablets but they can’t afford an iPad. For once it’s not all about apps, it’s about cash.

In exiting a market, HP has propelled the TouchPad to the #2 tablet slot. Can they capitalise on this and turn WebOS into a success or have they simply jumped the shark?

Time for Yahoo to Close Groups?

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 11:16 AM on August 22, 2011

It’s another Monday and seems to be another day of inbox Spam. However, I’ve noticed recently how more and more spam groups are being created on Yahoo! and joining me. They basically say the same thing:

I’ve added you to my akljsdfklj group. a free Yahoo! Group to send and receive group messages.

Description: asdflkhasdf

To gain access, click the link…

This is another reason that Yahoo! just doesn’t care about their product. I use Google Groups all the time and don’t get any spam messages like this. Yet, every week I am removing stupid posts like in the image.

Where is the confirmation? I really have to click on a link and tell them this group is spam? Why not have some protocols in place to avoid me getting annoyed like this?

Here are some ideas that anyone running a group website could implement:

1. Multiple fields on form

Make them fill out more information than your name and small description. Make them enter in some contact information. Require a description field to be 20 words or more (not just characters). Have an algorithm determine if the description is jibberish or actually says something.

2. CAPTCHA

It’s annoying, but in a way, it’s meant to be annoying. That way, you know someone is human. Yahoo! does have some CAPTCHA algorithms that they could use in this group. It also kills the bots attempts to register groups.

3. Confirmation

Email confirmation means they have to register an email address first. That might also stop some bots from creating groups.

These are not revolutionary ideas. They have been used before and can be used again. The more we can stop spammers and bots, the less phishing scams and malware can be created. When that happens, people and companies save millions of dollars.

So Yahoo! – If you’re just going to let it continue, then why not shut down YahooGroups and get out of the business. It’s what you’re doing anyway…

Turn Your iPod Nano into a Watch with TikTok

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 10:49 AM on August 22, 2011
TikTok Watch

TikTok Watch

TikTok was a product that was turned down by Apple, so they went to Kickstarter to raise funds. After 30 days, the end result was not only a great amount of enthusiasm, but also the funds to create the TikTok watch.

The TikTok watch is a case for your iPod Nano. Once you put the Nano into your watch enclosure, you can use this just like a watch. The casing – made of Aerospace grade Aluminum – Comes in several styles and colors. So you could easily change watch enclosures to go with your wardrobe.

Best part – It’s more than just a watch. Not only can you listen to music, but you can use the watch as a Pedometer, a fitness application, an FM radio and more.

Scott Wilson (@ScottWilsonID), founder of MINIMAL (based in Chicago, IL) was the creator of this enclosure. Their company works by enhancing products from companies like  Xbox, Nike, Dell, Microsoft, Apple and Coalesse.

These enclosures start at $79. Check out LunaTik.com for more information. Of course, get a Nano at the Apple Store.

A Brief Look at Markdown

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:04 PM on August 21, 2011

I have never liked using HTML, I know it’s necessary but I find using it annoying. Editing a post with a lot HTML in it is even worse. It is hard to separate the code from the actual text. I had been looking for something easier for awhile when I stumbled across a post by John Gruber on Daring Fireball about a thing called Markdown. Markdown does two things it allows you to write in plain text and then using a software tool written in Pearl it then converts that plain text into to HTML. I don’t know exactly how it works but it does. In fact when I first stared using it I thought for sure I was missing something, but I wasn’t.

# Some Examples

To write an unordered list in Markdown simply write * space and then the word.

* Links
* Bold
* Italicize
* Images
* Headers

If you  want to do a numbered list do the number then a period, then a space and the word. If you want to make something bold just surround it by two * as in **Puppies** are great. To italicize a word surround it by one * as in *Kittens* are cute. To do a link you do [the word or phrase you are linking](the link) as in this post is about [Markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/).
These are is just a few example of  the use of Markdown.

Using a Markdown enabled text editor the above paragraph becomes

Some Examples (a header)

If you are interested in learning more about Markdown I would start with John Gruber’s post on Daring Fireball. The blog Practically Efficient also has some great post about Markdown.  Katie Floyd and David Sparks of the Mac Power Users did a whole podcast on it. Some Markdown enabled text editors that are on the iPad include Plain Text, Nebulous, Elements among others. On the Mac itself you can use Scrivener, Byword, TextMate (with bundle) and BBEdit just to name a few. I am not a Windows user so I am not as familiar with the available text editors, I do know Markdown works with Sublime. If you are a Linux user you may want to try Writr, although I am sure there are other options. You can also use Markdown within blogging software like WordPress, (with a plugin) and also SquareSpace. If you want to do more complicated text editing and include things like footnotes, tables, citations in addition to various output formats then try MultiMarkdown which is a superset of Markdown. If you do a lot of writing that involves the use of HTML, then I recommend trying Markdown. If you have trouble remembering the various Markdown codes you can download a cheat sheet from Dashkard
