Yahoo Steps Up Image Search

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 4:32 PM on August 10, 2011

yahoo image search

Yahoo announced today that they are enhancing their image search.  It has a new tiled interface, a “latest” tab for trending results, a “galleries” tab, and Facebook integration that displays pictures from your friends with your results.  The biggest change is, perhaps, the way clicked images are displayed.  According to the Yahoo announcement:

“By clicking on any image on the search results page, the image will appear on a fresh page allowing users to browse effortlessly through full-size images with a simple click on the desktop browser.”

The new tiled interface renders all images in equal size, which I actually like better than Google’s “mismatched” look.  Like Google and Bing, Yahoo enlarges an image if you hover your mouse over it.

Yahoo is also claiming that more improvements are on the way.  These changes are worth checking out because I think this may be the cleanest, prettiest image search of any of the big three search engines.  Of course, the bottom line is the results your query gets, and that remains to be seen.  You can test it out at images.yahoo.com.

They’re brilliant on so many levels, bringing wartime effort to Big Brother and a line that is so close to being crossed without us even knowing. There are nine posters in the series, so check them all out and buy one.

Anonymous Plans November 5th Facebook Attack – Needs to be Stopped

Posted by Jeffrey Powers at 10:27 AM on August 10, 2011

The following message showed up on YouTube. I have transcribed:

Attention citizens of the world. We are anonymous. We wish to get your attention hoping you heed the warnings as follows. Your medium of communication that you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing activist, or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information, then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy. Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so they can spy on people from all around the world.

Some of these so-called “White hot infosec” firms are working for a formatarian governments such as those of Egypt and Seria. Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “Privacy” settings and deleting your account is impossible – even if you delete your account all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time.

Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more private is even a dilusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. You cannot hide from the reality in which you – the people of the internet – live in facebook – is the opposite of the anti-sec cause.

You’re not safe from them nor any government.

One day you will look back on this and realize what we have done here is right. Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history.
November 5th 2011. We are anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive, we do not forget. Expect us.

Why Nov 5th, 2011?

Guy Fawkes Mask

Guy Fawkes Mask

This is Guy Fawkes Day, which commemorates when Fawkes and others placed explosives under the British House of Lords in 1605. Fawkes is the mask Anonymous wears. Therefore, they chose this date to bring a social network down.

Joke or Reality?

That is tough to say. Anonymous is an established group, so the attempt can be taken a little more serious. Since we don’t know who makes up this group, it makes this harder to determine. For all we know, several of the members used to work for Facebook. Possibly even a programmer that might have created a secure back door to initiate this attack.

Bottom Line: This Needs to be Stopped!

This is a terrorist action and Anonymous should be treated as such. There is a famous term that most of us take to heart – We shall not succumb to terrorist threat. Violence does not beget violence.

If Facebook is doing what Anonymous says, then they need to be prosecuted in a court of law. No one group gets to decide their fate.

What will be next? Google+? Twitter? Your website?

Zero Tollerance – FBI Needs to Get Involved.

Think about it – You take down a giant in Facebook like that and it has a major economic effect. People build business around Facebook and with the site forcefully taken down like that, people can literally lose millions. Bringing in a new financial crisis to an already unstable economy.

We do not know how this organization will bring Facebook down – and that is the most important part. We assume that it’s going to be something like a DDoS or major virus. What if it’s a physical attack on their server farms or offices?

Remember: Guy Fawkes Organization used explosives to take down the British House of Lords.

This is not the way to do it. With these actions, Anonymous might find that they are protecting the one thing they want to bring down. A threat is a threat, whether a joke or not.

Facebook has many protocols in place to prevent such an attack. I would suggest, however, that Facebook change some policy and review their systems just to make sure there is no back door. Then make sure they have security in place on November 5th.

This is never something you should joke about. I hope they take Anonymous down. Period.

Boxee on the iPad

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 2:35 PM on August 9, 2011

BoxeeToday Aug 9, 2011 Boxee released Boxee for the iPad. This allows you to play videos from the home screen of Boxee on your iPad and also local video which are on the same wireless network. After you install Boxee on the iPad and sign in, you will see your Boxee home screen, which shows the videos your friends are sharing with you, videos you have saved for later and the Boxee feature videos. At this time you can not play Boxee Apps on the iPad. If you want to play local video files you need to down load the Boxee Media Server to your computer. This is where I ran into my first glitch, according to the system requirement it should run on any Intel Mac running 10.5 and above. However when I tried to install it on my Mac Mini core duo, running Snow Leopard, I received an error message stating it couldn’t run on the machine. It did install fine on my MacBook running Intel Core 2 running Lion. I did send a support ticket to Boxee, but haven’t heard back yet. I did look at the Boxee forum and it appears I am not the only one with the problem. Once the Boxee Media Server is installed to your computer, you can add your media files by clicking on preferences. By default it will add your My Movies folder if you are running it on a Mac.  To add additional folders click on the plus button. I had no problem adding my video folders that are stored on external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme.

Videos directly from Boxee played and sounded great. However, when I went to play local videos there was no sound. In fact the volume rocker was not working at all. The first thing I did was a full shut down of the iPad and then a restart. That didn’t fix the problem. Then I went into Settings and then General and for some reason decided to switch my side rocker from where it locks the  iPad rotation to where it works as the mute button. Surprisingly that fixed the problem, although I have no idea why. So far it has played all video formats I have sent to it without any problems. You can send your videos to your TV using Air Play if you have an Apple TV or Boxee Box attached. If you use a Mac Mini as a media server you can use Banana TV to send videos from Boxee on the iPad to the monitor.

The Boxee Media server also works with Window XP, Vista and Windows 7, at this time it is not available for Linux. I haven’t been using Boxee on the iPad long since it just came out, but so far I like it. It will be interesting to see if they add the ability to view video apps on the iPad, I suspect the hold is due to licensing issues rather than technical ones.

Update: Aug 11-  Received answer back from Boxee on the Mac Mini  issue, and unfortunately the Boxee Media Server only works on 64 bit machines, so it will not work on that machine which is 32 bit.

I talk about constraints tonight, you will notice show is 1:23:00 I have realized I have been feeling constrained and rushed with the 1:10:00 limit I imposed on myself. Unless I get a barrage of email begging me to go back the show is going back to a semi un-constrained time limit.

Read it Later

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 3:17 PM on August 8, 2011

Read it LaterMost mornings when I wake up I usually have over 500 post in my favorite feed reader. Clearly I am not going to read all of them so I skim through them and then save those that look interesting to Read it Later. Once I am finished skimming my feeds I then can go to Read it Later and read those articles that really interest me. I have the choice of seeing just the text or the full article. I can also adjust the font size, which I like especially at night when my eyes get tired. You can also adjust the backlight on the app for reading at night. Although I prefer the black type on white background, you do have the option of doing white text on black background.

After you have read an article you can share it out to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or Digg. If you want you can save the article to Pinboard Evernote or to Tumbler. Read it Later is available on the iPad, iPhone, Androids, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. Read it Later is accessible through various Twitter application including Twitter for iPhone and IPad, Tweetbot and Osfoora and Seesmic just to name a few. Which is great if you see a link to an article on Twitter and you want to read the article later. As far as RSS readers it works with Reeder, River of News, Feedler, along with Google Reader among many other. I personally use it with Zite and FlipBoard. It is also available as an add-on or an extension for all major browsers.

A lot of people will compare Read it Later with Instapaper. which I have also used. However I tend to use them differently. To me Read it Later is a more temporary holding place, after I read a post I may send to my various social networks or save it to Pinboard or Tumbler and then I archive it. If it is article that I think might use to write a blog post at some later time I will save it to Instapaper and put it in my Blog folder. What about you do you use Read it Later or do you prefer Istapaper or perhaps something else. I always willing to try something new to see if it has something that I am missing.

Geek Joke of the Day

This is really bad….

Apparently the NASA Juno probe
couldn’t use a real-time operating system
because it’s Io bound.

Thanks to @marnanel for that gem.

At What Point Do We Run Out of Time?

Posted by susabelle at 12:02 PM on August 8, 2011

I just attended a two-day technology conference aimed at higher education faculty and staff.  One of the big features of the conference was a track on personal learning environments and “technology engagement” of students.  In other words, how can faculty and staff use the technology tools out there today to engage their students in ways the students already understand and use.

One of the sessions I attended advocated creating an entire pod of space including blogs, Twitter, facebook, and wikis focused on one class.  One of the presenters bragged about how she had created a “mother blog” and all of the students each had their own blog, and every student was responsible for two weekly posts to their blog, and had to read and comment on all of the blogs the other students in the class were working on.  They were also supposed to Tweet whenever they posted an entry on their blog, and update the wiki with their new entry as well.  I did the basic college math and figured that to do this effectively, each student needed to be spending some 10 hours twice a week simply reading and commenting on their classmates’ blogs, if there were 30 students in the class and each blog took 20 minutes to read.  Never mind the hour or more it might take to post a respectable blog post, and then updating the wiki to reflect the new information.  Once they’ve done that, there’s still the reading assignments, paper assignments, tests and test studying, that has to go on.  This new “personal learning environment” was tripling the work load for these students, right out of the gate.  Multiply this by the number of classes they might be taking (let’s say 5), and suddenly, there’s more homework time than there are waking hours in a week.

I was not the only one to attend this session and make the same conclusion afterwards.  Who has time for all that?

As it is, I don’t have time for half of what I want to do.  I read about 10 blogs religiously, another 15 or so when the topic sounds interesting, plus local and national news.  I post on facebook, I write posts for GeekNewsCentral plus my own blogs, as well as answering emails and taking care of other online business.  And somewhere in there I have to eat, work, sleep, shower, and mow the lawn.

While I think “Web 2.0″ and all of the social networking is a great resource and source of entertainment and information, I have my doubts as to whether integrating this so deeply in the classroom experience of college students brings any real value to the mix.  Seems like an awful lot of busywork, which I’m not sure any college student needs more of.  I don’t see these methodologies replacing current classroom teaching and assignments, either, for many reasons.

I will be interested to see if this truly takes off on my campus.
