Posted by Andrew at 12:00 AM on November 21, 2011

German Enigma MachineGeeks in the UK may be interested in “Britain’s Greatest Codebreaker” on Channel 4 tonight (21 Nov) at 9pm. Described as a drama documentary, the programme follows the life of Alan Turing, the mathematical genius who was instrumental in breaking the German Naval Enigma code during World War II. Set your PVR now.

(The notes also say that the programme will be available on 4oD shortly after transmission, but this is usually only available if you are in the UK or Ireland. 4oD is Channel 4′s on-demand Internet streaming service.)

Starbucks’ Free Pick of the Week

Posted by Andrew at 3:09 PM on November 20, 2011

Starbucks Coffee CupI’m possibly a bit slow on the uptake here, but Starbucks in the UK are offering a free “Pick of the WeekiTunes download. Some weeks it will be a music track, other weeks it will be an e-book, some will be well-known, some will be up-and-coming.

I came across this freebie last week while frequenting my local coffee house but after checking on-line, it looks like the promotion has already been running for a few weeks.

You’ll find little credit card-sized vouchers with a download code on the back close to the tills. I picked up The Damned United by David Peace. Enter the code into iTunes / iBooks and it’s added to your collection. Easy.

Connect and See Your Devices with DLink Products

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 8:12 PM on November 19, 2011

http://images.dlink.com/new/products/DIR-645/DIR-645_front.pngIf you live in a large house or have an office that has a lot of concrete barriers or pillars you may have deadzones where it is difficult to get a wi-fi signal, then you may want to take a look at the D-Link Amplifi WholeHome Router 1000 (DIR-645). It helps to eliminate wireless dead spots and delivers a signal to all your devices at once by the use of the SmartBeam. You can connect devices directly to it using the SharePort Plus for streaming USB devices. There are also 4 Ethernet ports to connect your favorite gaming or entertainment devices also. It will give them up to 300 Mbps speed and advanced QoS bandwidth prioritization for great HD video streaming and clear lag free VoIP calling. Not only does it work with multiple devices but the setup is simple. The Whole Home Router 1000 has Wireless G backward capability, is IPV6 capable and has 128 bit security encryption.

One thing you can connect to the Whole Home Router 1000 is the mydlink-enabled Wireless N Network Camera (DCS-932L). The DCS-932L is easy to view and manage through the mydlink.com website. You simply log into the website and choose your device and start viewing. You don’t have to configure the router to open up a port, or remember some internet address either. It also comes with night vision so you can view your home or business 24/7. Not only can you see what is happening but with the built-in microphone you can also hear what is happening. It is plug-play for novice users, but for more advance users it has some great features, including the ability to set recording schedules, email alert notifications and trigger motion detection. The website can handle up to 32 cameras and you can upload a floor plan of your house or business so you know exactly what you are looking at. You can record directly to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device or a computer. It works with the mydlink app for both the iPhone or Android.

To be able use all those device you plan to get for the holidays no matter where you put them in your house or business take a look at the D-Link Whole Home Router 1000 and to make sure they are safe the mydlink-enabled Wireless N Network Camera (DCS-932L).

Google Music Has Hit the Android Market on Verizon Devices

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 7:29 PM on November 19, 2011

Owners of Verizon Android devices woke up this morning to a pleasant surprise.  Google Music, announced this past Wednesday, was said be getting rolled into an Android Market update which would be going out to all mobile devices “over the next few days”.  Overnight on Friday the Android Market version 3.3.11 hit Verizon’s Android phones.

The update is both exciting and nothing special all in one.  On the one hand, it’s just a simple addition of a “Music” tab on the Market home screen.  No fancy UI changes here.  On the other hand it’s exciting because of everything contained in that one simple tab.  Click Music and a whole new world, previously unavailable to Android users, opens up before you.

There are new releases, staff picks, recommended (based on your Google Music library), and, best of all, “free exclusives”.  If you have been with Google Music since the private beta then you’re ready to go.  If you joined after it went public then you have some catching up to do.  You need to sign up for an account, install the Music Manager, and upload your music collection.  The background upload can be time consuming – my 12,000 songs took several days.  Visit music.google.com to get started

If you haven’t yet received the Android Market update then you will have to wait until it is rolled out to your device.  There is, unfortunately, no way that I have seen to force the update.  Everyone should have it soon, though.  In the meantime, here’s a couple screenshots to give you an idea of what to expect.

Ford Announces the Green Escape, Focus on the Enviroment

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:26 PM on November 17, 2011

Much of the focus lately on Ford products has surrounded technology, as in Ford Sync.  That changed yesterday, however, with the announcement of the new Ford Green Escape.  That’s green as in environmentally friendly, although you can get it in green the color also.  The emphasis for the Green Escape is in two areas – the components and the noise.

The components that go into building the Green Escape are all made from environmentally friendly materials designed to make it 85% recyclable.  Some of the features include seats that contain 5% soy foam, carpet made from 25 recycled 20 ounce plastic bottles, dash insulation made from 10 pounds of scrap cotton from the clothing industry, and a climate control gasket made from 100% recycled tires.  In addition to the eco-friendly components, there are also features like the EcoBoost engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Ford’s engineers also put a lot of thought into noise levels and worked out ways to make the new Green Escape as quiet as possible.  For instance the body structure is 20 percent stiffer to help reduce road noise, the sunroof has a fabric mesh deflector to reduce wind noise when open, and the exterior mirrors are what Ford calls “aero-acoustically optimized” which also helps to reduce wind noise, both with the windows open and shut.

Ford also used special sound treatment methods to audibly insulate the carpet, dash panel, and interior trim panels to further reduce the transmission of noise.  They even enhanced door and windows sealing.

Of course, the Green Escape still contains those great tech features that today’s Ford customers have come to expect.  The Sync computer system helps the driver control everything from music to phone to directions.  The Green Escape also has a great aerodynamic look that fits the small-sized SUV.
