This Engagement is OFF!

Posted by susabelle at 6:50 PM on December 19, 2011

It appears as if the engagement is off in the proposed AT&T purchase of T-Mobile.  Was it something T-Mobile said?  Or did AT&T not bring enough bling to the union?  Or was it just a falling out, a difference of opinion?

Actually, it rather looks like the minister in charge of officiating (the U.S. Government that has to approve such mergers) questioned a bit too deeply AT&T’s commitment to the plan.  In the end, AT&T realized that the government would never approve the merger.

AT&T is still crying that it can only build available bandwidth by buying up other companies with bandwidth to spare.  It is now using the equivalent of that old pre-marital argument, “you didn’t deserve me, T-Mobile, but someone else will want me.”

I have to wonder why AT&T isn’t investing their billions of dollars in profit in building its own infrastructure to fill what it claims is a huge demand for bandwidth and service.  I would think that if it built it’s own infrastructure, it would ultimately control its market share by sheer force of its available service.  This seems like a no-brainer to me, but I may be missing something.

And since I moved from a place where AT&T coverage was ubiquitous (St. Louis Metro area) to a place where AT&T coverage is spotty at best, I do realize that they come up short in the “we are everywhere” broadband service spectrum.  They aren’t everywhere.  There are places in my own town where we are completely in a dead zone.  They definitely need to improve their coverage areas.

I’m probably one of a lot of people who are very happy to see the end of this potential merger.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see who they try to buy next.  I, for one, would rather see more wireless carriers, not fewer, in our country.

Magellan Back-up Camera Wins CES Innovations 2012 Award

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 2:47 PM on December 19, 2011

The run up to CES always picks up speed in the second half of December when early award winners begin to be announced.  Today Magellan, one of the leaders in the GPS market, announced that they have been named the winner of the CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Award for their Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera.

Many cars today are beginning to come with this technology built-in, but if yours doesn’t Magellan makes it an easy retro-fit.  The tiny wireless camera mounts to the car’s license plate and when the vehicle is put into reverse compatible Magellan GPS devices switch from navigation mode to camera view.

“Magellan is proud to announce it has been named an International CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Award Honoree for its Wireless Back-up Camera. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the prestigious Innovations Design and Engineering Awards have been recognizing achievements in product design and engineering since 1976. Products in 32 categories are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the media.”

The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera is available from the Magellan Store for $149.99.  You can find out more about the CES Innovations Awards by visiting this page on the CES website.

Sennheiser Brings New Earphones to CES

Posted by Andrew at 11:49 AM on December 19, 2011

Sennheiser today announced that it would be presenting its latest in-ear headphones, the IE 60 and IE 80, at CES in January. Extending the Professional line, the new models build on Sennheiser’s experience in the music business and are aimed at audio enthusiasts who want the best possible sound quality from MP3 players and smartphones.

The IE 60 and IE 80 ear-canal phones are ideal for discerning listeners who want to hear music with the finest possible detail,” explained Eric Palonen, senior product specialist for Sennheiser’s consumer electronics division. “Based on the huge success of our earlier models and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from our customers, we developed new models that have an even more innovative design.

The IE 60 has passive noise attenuation of up to 20 dB, with a frequency response of 10 to 18,000 Hz, tuned to deliver modern rock and pop. The IE 80 provides a frequency response of 10 to 20,000 Hz with a passive noise attenuation of up to 26 dB, but its special feature is a unique sound tuning function. By using a miniature rotating control, the user is able to increase or reduce the bass response to suit the music being played.

The IE 60 and IE 80 are available now for MSRPs of $250 and $450 respective, though you can find them online for about half of that. Still, serious prices for serious sound. The full spec sheets (.pdf) are here and here, respectively.

Olympus LS-100 Audio Recorder

Olympus has announced the latest addition to its popular LS series of digital recorders with the addition of the LS-100 linear PCM audio recorder. Aimed at musicians and audio enthusiasts, it comes with a combination of professional interconnects, high quality sound recording, multitracking and extra features in a convenient pocket size.

Olympus LS-100 Audio RecorderIt’s an impressive little device with a matching list of features

- uncompressed 24 bit/96 kHz Linear PCM digital recording saved to the internal 4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB) / SDHC (up to 32GB) / SDXC (up to 64GB) cards.

- separate audio and system circuitry to keep the signal clean.

- low cut filter at either 100 Hz or 300 Hz to eliminate low frequency background noise.

- two quarter-inch XLR / standard phone combo jacks, supporting phantom power at 48/24 volts to power high-quality external microphones.

- 8 track multitracking, with independent volume and pan control.

- tuner and metronome.

- Lissajous measurement which shows the phase difference betweenthe left and right mics.

- direct CD mastering.

- 2″ LCD screen and all-metal body.

The Olympus LS series has been a favourite of musicians, artists and music lovers, and the LS-100 is an evolution in this series designed with the working musician, specifically, in mind,” said Amy Leslie, Sr. Marketing & Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “For songwriting sessions, band rehearsals, live performances, broadcasting, or really anything that requires the highest quality of audio recording, the LS-100 is an ideal, all-encompassing recording solution.”

Nevermind all that, it just looks cool. Full details on the LS-100 are here and it will be available from all good stores in February 2012 for $399.

Independence USA Reality Show

Posted by tomwiles at 10:10 AM on December 18, 2011

Do world events have you rattled? Ever thought of learning to live off the grid?

Follow Frank Belcastro as he attempts to drag his family (sometimes kicking and screaming) toward his goal of being able to live completely on their own, off the grid.

“Independence USA” premieres on January 18, 2012 exclusively on GBTV.Com, Glenn Beck’s new streaming Internet-based television network. “Independence USA” is produced by GBTV and The WorkShop, L.L.C. whose team has produced shows for History, ESPN, ESPN Classic, Animal Planet, HGTV, trutv, Travel Channel, Lifetime, Discovery Channel, TLC, The Golf Channel, and Broadcast Syndication. The show will air weekly on Wednesdays.

The “Independence USA” trailer has hit reality show written all over it. In my opinion this is going to be a real game-changer for the concept of streaming video and new media. This is the first professional-quality TV series aimed at a mainstream reality TV audience produced exclusively for an Internet-based television network. Though networks have played around for years with streaming re-purposed television shows and movies, this is the first time a network is being built from the ground up, one module at a time to create a pay TV network for exclusive distribution on the Internet.

Will people subscribe to an Internet-only high definition TV network? The answer is, yes they absolutely will subscribe provided that the content is there. It’s highly likely that the addition of the “Independence USA” reality TV series will get many people over the hump and cause them to pay.

People already in the new media/streaming media space should welcome GBTV, because it is going to be a game-changer. It’s success will likely cause a bit of a land rush towards streaming. Devices such as the Roku are in a great position to reap those land rush benefits. The presence of professional level TV networks on the Roku will potentially have a bit of a “halo effect” for existing new media creators.

Ford revealing it’s new car via mobile App

Posted by Mike Dell at 10:41 AM on December 16, 2011

Ford is giving you the chance to “test drive” the new 2013 Ford Fusion via an Augmented Reality App for iPad, iPod and Andriod OS. The 2013 Ford Fusion will be revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January and will also be the “Official Car” of the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show (CES).

The App is a game that lets players “unlock” levels that will reveal more details about the new car. Once a player has unlocked all the levels (you can only play one level a day kind of like an advent calendar) you will see an image of the new Fusion and be able to share a picture facebook and twitter. You will also be able to drive any of the versions of the Fusion on the track in the game.

To download the game, go to fordfusionapp.com

Here is a walkthough on how the app works:

I think this is a fun way to let us in on what’s coming up at Ford.
