Regular readers will recall that I was quite taken with the integration of Pogoplug into the Buffalo CloudStation Duo, so I was very interested to hear that Pogoplug have released a new device, the Series 4. If you aren’t familiar with the Pogoplug device, it’s a network gadget that makes attached USB devices available across the Internet. In short, you can make your own personal cloud. More recently, Pogoplug has released a cloud service that complements the hardware devices.
Unsurprisingly, the Pogoplug Series 4 is the 4th generation of their of their original device, and while retaining the form factor of the Pogoplug Mobile, the devices now includes four different connection types for hooking up hard drives and other media.

The Pogoplug Series 4 is on-sale now for an RRP of $99.99.
I received this email this morning from CEA.
“Thank you for your participation in CEA’s Tech Enthusiast membership. You were truly early adopters in a program designed to reward fans of consumer technology. We are sorry to report that the Tech Enthusiast program has not driven the membership numbers we would have liked to see. CEA’s Board of Directors has decided to discontinue this program as a paid membership effective immediately.”
The Tech Enthusiast program was introduced last year as a way for people like me that where consumer electronics fans to stay abreast of CE trends without having to be a full fledged CEA member. Sad to see this has not worked out for the CEA.
All good intentions have a serious consequence when executed incorrectly. You will get a nice chuckle out of my goof up this weekend.. This show has some interesting topics that should make us all sit back and say hmmm..

In a change to the mobile phone contract status quo, UK mobile telco O2 has announced a 12 month smartphone leasing service. For £55 per month, you get a 16 GB smartphone, 750 minutes, unlimited text, a paltry 500 MB of data and insurance. Allegedly unique in the UK market, both consumers and business will be able to take advantage of O2 Lease.
If you are wondering what the difference is between a 12 month lease and 12 month contract, it’s simply that the smartphone doesn’t belong to you and must be returned in reasonable condition at the end of the lease. That’s why insurance is included in the cost of the lease so that the smartphone can be replaced in the event of damage or loss.
O2 extols the benefits of a 12 month lease, tying it into the upgrade cycles of the smartphone models and giving you the latest model without a long contract. The choice of smartphone models isn’t mentioned but O2 offers all the premium smartphones – Apple iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nokia Lumia 800 and Blackberry Torch. 32GB models cost an extra £10 per month. Update – O2 Lease is specifically mentioned against the iPhone 4S here.
If you really want the latest phone and you’re a big talker or texter, this scheme might be worth considering but the tiny data allowance really makes it all a bit of a farce. My monthly data usage is between 600-800 MB and I don’t think that I’m a particularly heavy user. Yes, I might download the odd podcast but it’s mostly email, web browsing, Twitter and RSS feeds.
Personally, I tend to buy my smartphones SIM-free as there are far better tariffs out there and you can easily sell the smartphone after 12 months to part-fund your next purchase. Do the maths for yourself and see what works for you.
The full press release is here.
Quick intro for all the vendors/viewers coming to Geek News Central looking for info on whats ahead for CES 2012!

For a while now we have been hearing about the coming hard drive shortage due to issues in the far east (mainly the flooding in Thailand), but before those problems reach the world, Hitachi is going to go for gold. Maximum PC is reporting that Hitachi has released the first 4 TB internal hard drive for sale in Japan. For those keeping score, that’s a new record for the largest storage drive.
Hitachi hasn’t actually announced this, which I find a bit strange, but Maximum PC found a website reporting the drive was on sale in stores in Japan. They report the drive is part of the Hitachi Deskstar line, has a SATA 6Gbps interface, 32 MB of cache and Hitachi’s proprietary CoolSpin technology, which is supposed to allow the hard drive to run both quieter and with less heat.
The reported price for a Hitachi Deskstar 4 GB hard drive is 26,800 yen, or about $345. That’s a steep price given the current price range for hard drives in the U.S. In all likelihood other manufacturers will have their own 4 TB offerings on the market soon so, unless you’re really desperate for the storage or have money to blow, I would recommend waiting.
I have been looking at Google Currents since it came out on the 8th and it’s ok, but that’s all it is just ok. In many ways it is similar to FlipBoard or Zite, but it is missing the social connections that FlipBoard has and the personalization of Zite. First the good news it is well designed and fairly intuitive to use. It is offered on all iOs and Android devices. You have two areas first is your Library and the second is trending topics. The first time you open the app up you are given some default content in your library including Forbes Magazine, Fast Company, Saveur Magazine, PBS and Bleacher Report just to name a few. If you want to add more you simply tap on Library and add the sources you want. You can also add your google reader sourc if you want. There is also a list of curators including Robert Scoble , tech enthusiast and photographer Thomas Hawk. The trending topic shows what is happening now in your area of interest. To dig down into a source you tap on it and then tap on the article, you swipe right to left to read through an article and tap on the arrow at the bottom to get to the next article in the source. If you want to get back to the table of content click on the book at the bottom of the screen. To go back to the main home you hit the home icon. To save or share the article tap on the circle with two arrows pointing up. You can +1 to Google Plus, share to Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook. You can save to Pinboard or Instapaper. You can also email a link.

Like I said Google Currents is ok, but although you can share out, there is no connection to your social network coming in like there is with FlipBoard. With FlipBoard you can add your Twitter list, you can’t do that on Google Currents. Also there is no way to teach Google Currents what articles interest you and those that don’t. On Zite you can thumb an article up and down. You can request more from a certain author with Zite. You can’t do anything like that with Google Currents and that is where it fails. I also find it strange that although you can +1 something you can’t share directly to a specific circle within Google Plus. You would think that the first thing a Google product would do be to share with another Google product. This isn’t to say it will not get better, but for now I am sticking with FlipBoard and Zite.
It seems Apple thinks you may want to give the gift of the Beatles this holiday season as they have released a brand new iTunes Beatles ad. The new ad comes right on the heels of a free children’s eBook hitting the iTunes store. The Yellow Submarine eBook carried with it the simple “For Steve” dedication and tells the tale of the 1968 movie in the form of a children’s book, with clips from the film, animated illustrations, and a read-along from actor Dean Lennox Kelly.
The new TV ad, which was posted to YouTube by Apple yesterday, features a clip from the song Magical Mystery Tour as the video rolls seamlessly through a history of the Beatles albums with real and animated pictures. The commercial excludes U.S.-only Beatles releases like “Meet the Beatles” and focuses exclusively on the core U.K catalog, ending with Abbey Road. The ad ends with a simple “The Beatles on iTunes”.
With Beatles music still fairly new to the digital form and still just as popular as it was when it was released more than 30 years ago, it’s not really a surprise that Apple would put out this little reminder in time for holiday shoppers looking for just one more little gift. The Beatles music has now reached a whole new generation of fans, including my own children who were 13 and 10 when we took them to their first concert two years ago – Paul McCartney won them over.
