VidaBox Introduces Power-Over-Cat5 Charging

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 10:41 AM on May 31, 2012

VidaBox, makers of high-end Media Center computers and media servers, today announced a brand new product that brings charging capability to your Cat5 cables.  There are actually two new products – the vPower Station and the vCharger.  To my knowlege, VidaBox is the first manufacturer in this field, although there have been ways of extending USB via Cat5 around previously.

The vPower Station can connect a single CAT5/5e/6 cable at up to 328 feet [100m] long, and provide steady power to the vCharger, which has a powered USB port.  The vPower Station is a 4 port adapter.  The vCharger has one ethernet port and one USB port for charging a device.  The vCharger is also backwards compatible with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switches as power sources.

While both devices are aimed at custom installers, as are most of the VidaBox products (they even state in their press release that ”The vCharger can be also used in a table-top environment, or custom-built into new or existing furniture, as its gloss black finish gives it a high-end look that blends into any environment,”), the retail price makes them a real possibility for the general consumer market.

Both products, the vPower Station and vCharger, retail for $99 each and the purchase of 4 vChargers will get your a free vPower Station.  You can head over to the VidaBox site to check them out, find out more, and place an order.

Google Nexus Tablet to be Priced $149?

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 4:48 PM on May 30, 2012

There has been a load of “information” floating around the internet the past few days regarding the Google Nexus tablet, which can pretty much be confirmed as a real product at this point.  It’s only the technical specs that are still just rumors, and we have seen nothing but speculation regarding the price, although rumors have been pegging it at $199 to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

Personally I was expecting Google to try and undercut Amazon, perhaps going $189, but now tech news site SlashGear is jumping into the story with a report that the new Asus-manufactured tablet will hit the market priced at just $149!  In addition, they are reporting that the device will feature a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and the latest version of the Android operating system, although not 5.0 Jellybean as some sites have been reporting.  Instead, SlashGear claims it will likely be version 4.2, which will still be known as Ice Cream Sandwich.  SlashGear cites sources from both Asus and NVIDIA for their information.

So, what do you think of a $149 Android tablet?  Is it real?  Would you buy it?  Personally, I will not only buy one at that price, but also one for each of the two kids and the wife!

SoftBank Unveils a Radiation-Scanning Phone

Posted by JenThorpe at 3:36 PM on May 29, 2012

SoftBank, the third largest Japanese phone carrier, is releasing something new for its Summer of 2012 lineup. The new Pantone 5 SoftBank 107SH Android smartphones will have integrated radiation detectors. It is able to detect estimated gamma radiation of between 0.05 and 9.99. Press a button to activate the radiation detection feature. Wait ten seconds for it to take a reading. It will place the location that the reading was taken onto a map.

SoftBank is debating on whether or not to add a social aspect to this, for people to share their radiation readings. This is because the readings can vary, depending on how they are taken. Another issue is that there isn’t a hard definition of a minimum dangerous level of this type of radiation. These phones will go on sale in Japan in July of 2012. A price has not yet been set.

There is a lot of concern in Japan about the harm that can come from high radiation levels. This is especially worrying for parents of young children. There has been a call for radiation monitoring at schools and other public facilities in the country. Parts of northeastern Japan are still off-limits because of the high radiation levels after the Fukushima nuclear power plant was devastated by a huge earthquake and tsunami that occurred in 2011.

The Pantone 5 series of SoftBank phones come in eight bright colors. The advertisements show the phones with an image on their screen of ice cream cones that match the color of the phone it is being displayed on. The phones have a 3.7 inch screen with 854 x 480 pixels resolution. They are powered by a 1.4 GHz single-core processor. The phones also have a 4-megapixel rear-facing camera, Bluetooth 3.0, and will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Windows 8 Release Preview Leaks

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 10:10 AM on May 29, 2012

Poor Microsoft just can’t keep anything secret.  Today the Release Preview version of Windows 8, which will be released in the coming days, has leaked out to P2P.  The build, which is labeled 8400, hit bit torrent and is spreading quickly.  Numerous sites have already posted screenshots of the next version of the operating system.

The build, which is offically 8400.0.WINMAIN_WIN8RC.120518-1423_X64FRE_CLIENT_ZH-CN-HRC_CCSA_X64FRE_ZH-CN_DV5, contains 3 new Metro-style apps from Microsoft – News, Sports, and Travel – as well as built-in support for Adobe Flash.  The web site Winunleaked confirmed the legitimacy of the leaked copy and also provides links if you are so inclined to try it out.  I recommend extreme caution with any such download.

Windows 8 Release Preview is expected to be released in early June and will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.  If you can’t wait another week then check your P2P client, but make sure you install it on a PC that you don’t mind experimenting with and is insulated from the rest of your network.  Better yet, just wait a few days and get it directly from Microsoft.

URs Holzlz - G+ Profile Image

At a Memorial Day barbeque over the weekend, I found myself sequestered in a corner of a friend’s yard with a mutually nerdy acquaintance talking about memory – both human and digital. The question was, “How much memory does the human brain possess – in bytes?” We theorized, but neither we, nor anyone else, it seems, has an answer.

While the human brain and its capacity is still largely a mystery, Google engineer Urs Holzle posted an interesting factoid about digital memory from his Google+ account over the weekend:

“59 years ago, in March 1953, the world had a grand total of 53 kilobytes of RAM spread over a dozen or so computers, the largest having 5KB. That’s not enough RAM to store a single icon…

For comparison, today the DRAM market produces around 40 billion billion bits per year. In other words, each second we produce about 25 million times as much memory as the world had in all of 1953.”

Those types of numbers are difficult to digest, but the advancement in memory and computing capabilities even over the past could of decades is remarkable. Moving forward, I would imagine not only the memory available will continue to rise, but the way we access it will continue to develop, as well – from sub-pint-sized memory sticks to consumer cloud storage by the gigabyte.

GNC-2012-05-29 #769 Family Loss

Posted by geeknews at 11:36 PM on May 28, 2012

Received the news late this afternoon that my Grandfather on my dads side of the family had passed away. While expected still has hit me like a ton of bricks. I am luckier than most as I had all of my grandparents up to a few short years ago. All lived into their 90′s and went out on their own terms which is all one can hope for at the end of a long fruitful life. On my past show we where close to the end as my Grandfather was reaching up and calling out my Dad’s name. So I know that my Dad was waiting for him and that he is in a better place. I will likely be heading to Michigan either Wednesday to Thursday so if there is a show it will be from Michigan..

Congratulations to Melisa Strayer she is out last listener appreciation month winner. Congrats to all of the winners this month, and a big thank you to all of you that participated in the contests.

A Facebook Mobile Phone?

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 8:30 PM on May 28, 2012

New rumors have been coming out in the last couple of days that Facebook is going to build their own mobile phone. That they have been headhunting Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone. During the initial interviews they are being asked specific questions that only would be asked by someone who was building a mobile phone. Like a lot of people I was confused about why Facebook a social media company would want to build a mobile phone, then I thought about the one thing that Facebook is known for and that is control. Currently, Facebook apps are limited by the platform they are on whether Android, iPhone, Rim or Windows Mobile. There are things they may want to do but they can’t because of the limitations the iOs puts on them.

Facebook on the web is built to be a walled garden, where a person could spend their whole time on line there. As an app on a mobile phone that they don’t control the walled garden has a gaping hole in it. If they build their own mobile phone, then they control the platform, the message and therefore the consumer. This would give them a captured audience they can market mobile ads too, something those who have invested in Facebook have been looking for.

The problem with this idea, is there is no indication that the consumer is calling for a Facebook phone. Facebook will have to persuade both the consumer to buy a Facebook phone and developers to develop on the Facebook platform. Developers who are already spread thin working on the iPhone, Android and the Window Mobile platform. Also do the carriers want another platform to deal with. I think most Facebook users would rather Facebook concentrate on improving the apps that already exist.
