Nexus 7

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 8:13 PM on November 30, 2012

I had a iPad 3 which I really liked except for the size. It always felt too big for me, so I have been looking for a smaller tablet for a while. I thought of getting the iPad Mini, but it was a little above my budget. Today I picked up a Nexus 7 at the local Office Depot. Originally I was going to purchase a 16 GB model, however they didn’t have that model available. So I ended up getting the 32 GB model for a total of $264.99 (tax included), the second to last one they had in stock. I opened it up as soon as I got home and started to set it up. The first thing I noticed was it was heavier than I thought it would be. It feels good in my hands though, the weight is well distributed. I have the hands of an average American woman and I can hold it in portrait mode in the palm of one hand. Although I am not sure how long I would want to hold it that way, since my hand was open as far as it could be comfortably.

The set up was fairly straight forward, first it asked me what language I wanted. It then asked for my Google information and whether it could collect location information. The set up itself took a little while, I already have a Galaxy Nexus phone, so it had to download and than update all the applications. Once that was done I also had to download and install a system update. The tablet is now at 4.2.1 Jellybean.

When the setup was finished I started to place apps into folders and put them on to the screen. When I did that I noticed how small the folders were. They were phone size instead of tablet size. I am hoping the size is adjustable, that something I will have to explore. Right now having really small folders, just looks weird. I really like how widgets look and work on the Nexus 7. I watched a brief YouTube video and it looked and played great. Photos also look great on it. I haven’t taken any pictures with it, so I can’t comment on how well it takes photographs. I am use to either typing on a phone or a large tablet, so I will have to get use to typing on it. Text is crisp and easy to read on it. The battery life seems to be ok, it wasn’t fully charged when I started to use it, so it is hard to judge.

I have only had the Nexus 7 less than a day now, but so far I am very happy with it. I like the way it feels in my hands and how smoothly it runs. If you are on the fence about getting a Nexus 7, I would recommend it.

Zynga and Facebook Change their Relationship Status

Posted by JenThorpe at 7:57 PM on November 30, 2012

It’s not yet “Facebook official”, but it looks like game maker Zynga and the social media website Facebook have talked about changing their relationship with each other. The two have been together for years, and I never expected them to consider revising their partnership. However, it seems that they have had “a talk”.

The two companies have reached a new agreement that amends the one they created together in 2010. They aren’t going to do a complete and total “we are never, ever, getting back together” breakup. It’s more like they have each become interested in a more open relationship than what they previously had with each other. Each appears to want have less inter-dependence with the other.

It seems that at least some of the changes will become effective on March 31, 2013. Facebook is going to stop giving what has been seen as a “privileged status” or as “preferential treatment” to Zynga. The 2010 agreement provided Zynga with guaranteed promotions of certain Zynga games on Facebook. Instead, Zynga will be governed by the same rules and policies as the rest of the game companies that are on Facebook.

Facebook will be allowed to develop its own games. Word has it that the company feels it “was not in the business of building games” and doesn’t have plans to start creating them.

Zynga is going to have more freedom to operate its own, standalone, gaming website. They can choose not to display Faecbook’s ads on Zynga.com. They can also choose to not to collect revenue for games on Zynga.com in favor of using Facebook’s payment system. If it goes that route, Facebook will take a 30% cut of that revenue.

Those of you who are playing Zynga games on Facebook need not worry. Games like “Farmville” and “Mafia Wars” are staying put. The difference is that the games will stop featuring cross-promotions that direct you to Zynga.com. At the same time, you won’t be able to play at Zynga.com and tap into your friends who are connected to the games through Facebook.

Personally, I think this is good news. The changes could, potentially, make it possible for people like me, who play games but do not want a Facebook account, to be able to check out some of Zynga’s games.

Buffalo Launches Thunderbolt Portable SSD

Posted by Andrew at 3:13 PM on November 30, 2012

Buffalo LogoFollowing on from GNC’s review of the MiniStation Air earlier this month, Buffalo have a launched the MiniStation Thunderbolt SSD. As you might guess from the name, it’s a portable SSD with a Thunderbolt connection so it’s ideal for connecting up with Apple Macs.

Combining the SSD with Thunderbolt, the MiniStation has a read performance of more than 370 MB/s and a write performance that exceeds 250 MB/s, which is pretty nippy in anyone’s book. And I think those are Bytes and not bits. PC users aren’t left out with a USB 3.0 connection too, though it’s not as fast as the Thunderbolt connections.

MiniStation Thunderbolt SSD

Paul Hudson, Sales Director for Northern Europe at Buffalo, said: “The MiniStation Thunderbolt SSD combines a highly robust and aesthetically pleasing design with exceptionally fast data transfer speed. We have seen how Thunderbolt hard drives have transformed the available speed for read and write to storage devices, but with the additional of SSD in the Buffalo range, the speed stakes are raised again providing astounding performance.

The drive is bus-powered and will be available in two storage sizes, at a recommended price of £229.99 for the 128 GB product and £349.99 for the 256 GB version. There’s a .pdf spec sheet here.

Hopefully GNC will be bringing you a review of the MiniStation Thunderbold SSD in the not-too-distant future.

Using PlayOn with DirecTV

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 12:05 PM on November 30, 2012

PlayOn has been around for several years now, but for most people it has remained on the edge. However, the app has managed to become more prominent and insinuate itself into more places. It can work with almost any DLNA-capable device and also works with other popular  hardware like Roku and Google TV. Since DirecTV’s HR line of DVR’s are DLNA-capable I decided to give it a shot.

There are a few things you need to take care of before getting started. First and foremost, you need to make sure your DVR is connected to your home network — mine is hardwired thanks to an ethernet jack I installed behind the media cabinet and network switch that feeds, not only the DVR, but the HTPC, Netgear NeoTV and Blue-Ray player.

Now you will need to install the PlayOn server on a computer on your home network. The free version contains home media access, Pandora, YouTube and HBO Go (subject to your  subscription). The paid service contains about 60 additional channels and costs $19.99 per year.

Enable the “My Media” feature and then point it to the folders where your media — pictures, video and music — is stored. It may take a bit of time to catalog everything.

Now, on your DirecTV DVR click the “Menu” button, browse to “Extras”, click “Music & Pictures” and you will find a list of the available channels and files from your PlayOn server.

Under many of the stations you will find sub-headings, including subsidiary channels like NBC Sports under NBC. While it work great with a DirecTV DVR, it really is more for those who are looking to cut the cord and PlayOn with a Google TV box may just be the way to go.

How Much will that New Electronic Toy Add to Your Electric Bill?

Posted by KL Tech Muse at 8:18 PM on November 29, 2012

energy calculator Many people are going to be buying and getting new big screen TVs,  computers and other electronic gear  for Christmas and Hanukkah. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to calculate how much these devices will add to your electric bill.  Even if you are not getting any new devices, it is winter in the northern hemisphere which means you are probably spending more times indoors. Watching TV, playing video games and working on computers. This leads to the inevitable higher electric bill.

There are tricks you can use to lower your bill. However first you need to figure how much you are using. This is where the Consumer Electronic Energy Calculator created by the Consumer Electronic Association comes in. The calculator is now available at the GreenerGadget. The calculator is very easy to use. It is divided into various categories, computing, entertainment, home office, digital imaging and telecommunication. Under each category the appropriate devices are listed. You simply move the device you have or want into appropriate room on the diagram. It will ask you how many you have and how often you use it. It will also give energy tip for each item. Once you have added all your items it will calculate your energy usage. It will let you compare your usage to the average American household. It will also show you which category is using the most energy. With this information you can then start making changes on how you use your devices and save some money on your electric bill.  If you have a website and want to encourage your readers to be more green you can download a free widget from the GreenerGadget and add it to your website

Space Invaders

Posted by Andrew at 5:30 PM on November 29, 2012

Wind up Space InvadersSpace Invaders marched into the arcades in 1978, making the pixellated alien an instant classic, daa-da-ing his way backwards and forwards across the screen. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, Space Invaders brought video games to a worldwide audience.

The National Media Museum in Bradford, England, is offering a range of Space Invader-themed novelty items that would make great stocking fillers for old and young geeks alike. There’s an ice cube tray full of Space Invaders (£6), a Space Invaders-themed iPhone cover (£6), a pocket Space Invaders game (£8) and a wind-up Space Invader (£8). With the 80s being particular in vogue at the moment, anything Space Invaders is undoubtedly cool.

Somewhat bizarrely, you can’t order these on-line and you have to actually phone up to place an order. It’s probably taking the retro experience a bit too far but there you go. Order from the Museum Shop to beat the Christmas rush on 01274 203448 for our UK readers.

While reviewing the Museum of Media’s website (vainly looking for the on-line store), I also discovered that the Museum has a Videogame Archive, dedicated to consoles long forgotten such as the Nintendo Famicom. There’s also an Internet and Home Computing collection, with several items looking very familiar, including a BBC Microcomputer.

Worth a quick browse on-line or a real-world visit if you are in the neighbourhood.

Playdom Games Don’t Require Facebook

Posted by JenThorpe at 12:18 AM on November 29, 2012

I used to have a Facebook account. Earlier this year, Facebook stopped being fun (to make a long story short). I have since deactivated my Facebook account, for good, and have no intention of returning. The problem, though, is I have started to miss playing some of the little “time waster” games that I used to log into Facebook to play.

Zynga might be best known for their Farmville game, but they also have several others to choose from. Some of their games are accessible through Zynga.com. Hidden Chronicles is one of those “find the hidden object” type of games that I started playing when I was still on Facebook. Farmville isn’t part of Zynga.com, but they do have something new called Farmville 2. It sounded interesting.

This is when I encountered a big problem. It turns out that you cannot play any of Zynga’s games on the Zynga website unless you have a Facebook account. You can’t even log in without one. Clearly, Zynga doesn’t have any interest in attracting gamers who don’t happen to use Facebook.

Personally, I found this to be disappointing. I’ve already decided that I am done with Facebook. Zynga’s games are fun, but they aren’t important enough to me to convince me to get involved with Facebook again. It’s not worth it!

Fortunately, Zynga’s competitor is accepting all gamers, (even those without Facebook accounts). You can go to Playdom.com and sign in with an email address.

Two of the three games that you can play on Playdom’s website, Gardens of Time, and Blackwood and Bell Mysteries, are ones that I used to play on Facebook. Both are the “find the hidden object” type of games that I enjoy. I missed playing Gardens of Time more than I realized!

The games at Playdom, and the games at Zynga, can be played for free. However, it is possible to spend real world money in order to get something especially cool to use in a particular game. Right now, the only game I spend money on is World of Warcraft.

There is potential that someday, I will decided to spend a few bucks on one of these “time waster” games. Zynga has made it absolutely impossible for me to consider giving them money. Playdom, on the other hand, has been very welcoming. It is obvious which company has the chance to get some real world money from me, and which company does not.
