Meet the Audi RS5

audi logoWhat do you get when you cross an Audi RS8 with an Audi A5? A sports car for the more tame driver. The A5 is considered a high-performance version of a luxury car, while the RS8 is a straight up exotic sports car to take on Ferrari, Aston Martin and the like. Recently TPN’s own Jeffrey Powers got to check out the RS5, which falls into the middle.

If you are wondering why this was at CES and not an auto show then you only need to look inside at the Audi Connect system. It integrates Google Maps and Street View embedded in Audi’s own QNX system. This is not just for the RS5 though, it is coming to all models of the cars. The company is also working on bring 4G into its cars.

Behringer’s iStudio

Behringer iStudio Behringer showed off the iStudio at CES 2013. They recently added a version that works with the iPad 5’s Lightning Connector.  This is an audio interface which the iPad docks into. There is all the connectivity you need to do professional audio work when you are mobile. There are inputs for both condenser or dynamic microphones. There is also an RCA input for line in or turntable and a Midi interface to plug a keyboard into. There is an output to connect to a studio monitor. The iStudio is great for professional musicians and also for podcasters.

The iStudio with the traditional connector is available now for $199.00. The nine pin Lightning connector will be available in quarter two and will also sell at $199.00. Information about where you can purchase the iStudio is available at the Behringer website

Cord Cruncher is a unique headphone and cable

cord cruncher logoWe all experience the problems created by headphone cords. Despite our best efforts these things can become a tangled mess with seemingly no effort. However the untangling does require an effort.

Now Cord Cruncher provides a unique solution. The video below shows you what I would struggle to explain, but my best effort would be to call it retractable and easy to store and carry around without fear of spaghetti being the end result. You really need to see the video below to understand just how this works.

The Tea Maker

Tea Maker I drink coffee, but I also like to drink tea and since my husband doesn’t drink either a single serving machine with capsules is a great option for me. There are many single serving coffee machines on the market that use capsules, however there have been no machines that use capsules to make single serving of tea until now. The Cambridge Consultants Group has created a single serving capsule machine that is made specifically for tea.

The capsule with the tea in it is submerges in water. The capsule spins so the water goes into the center of the capsule and then out the sides and then back in through the center. This circulation is similar to the traditional tea making system. Then air is bubbled through the system to get rid of the bitterness that tea will often have. Right now the Tea Maker is still a prototype showing proof of concept and they are looking for companies who might be interested in manufacturing it. Once it does come out the Tea Maker should be priced around the same as similar coffee machines.

EyeMirror

EyeMirror The EyeMirror adapter combined with the GoPro 3 camera has created the world’s first 360 degree compact 4K camera. They have modified the optics of the GoPro. The frame rate while the camera with the EyeMirror adapter is in 360 mode will run at twenty-four frames per second, compared to twelve frames per second on the regular GoPro 3. It can output a 4k video. It works underwater down to hundred fifty feet, great for scuba divers, snorkelers, and surfers.

EyeMirror is getting interest from Disney, the military, law enforcement and many more. The whole kit which includes the EyeMirror plus the GoPro 3 will be around $800.00 expect six-eight weeks for delivery. You can find more information about EyeMirror and its many possibilities at the EyeMirror

Monster and Swizz Beatz team up

monster logoMonster is famous for its cables, but the company also produces other products — in this case headphones. Nick recently had a chance to speak with DJ Swizz Beatz about the Monster headphones.

Monster and Swizz Beatz have teamed up to collaborate on products. This brings a trained musical ear to the division to help make the best headphones possible. Beatz talks a bit about what he thinks makes Monster special and the headphones that he prefers to use in his personal life, where he DJ’s. He also talks a bit about what you can expect in the coming year.

Hyundai’s Technology BlueLink and More

Bluelink Hyundai showed off a lot of technology at CES 2013, BlueLink, haptic control, gesture control, face recognitions, advance heads up display and connectivity with your smart device. The infrared motion sensor, senses distance, motion and proximity. It allows you to change things with just hand gestures.  You can even reconfigure your gear cluster. They are also working on eye tracking software that can warn the driver if they are falling the asleep. They are developing face recognition software that would prevent the car from being stolen plus make things better for the driver.  When you buy a car a profile is set up for you and anyone else that is going to drive the car. When a person gets in the driver seat if the car recognizes that person (they have a profile) it will adjust the seat position, audio and climate control to the person’s preference based on their profile. If someone tries to steal the car and the car doesn’t recognize the person the car will not start or do anything.

It uses MHL Protocol to connect to your smart phone. Everything is in real-time. Navigation is projected on the windshield, so the driver can see the directions without ever having to take their eyes off the road. BlueLink Telematic System allows things to be  reconfigured remotely from an app, the web or using the in-car system. You can reconfigure heating, air conditioning, gage cluster, fan position and power. It keeps track of the health of the car and whether it needs maintenance. It can even tell you where your car is located when you lose your car in the parking lot of a mall. It is like putting remote start on steroid.

Vivick’s Latest Gadgets

Vivick HeadphonesCanadian firm Vivick produce a wide range of gadgets, covering everything from iPhone cases, laptop accessories and AV gear. Andy and Scott look at three of the latest products.

On show from Vivick is anLED desk lamp speaker that can be driven via Bluetooth but wouldn’t look out of place on the set of a 70s sci-fi movie. Continuing the theme, they had a Bluetooth headset which looked a bit more up-to-date but I can’t comment on the sound quality. Finally, they showed off a combo-laptop / USB rechargeable battery which had some really good design ideas. It seems to be a brand new product as it doesn’t yet feature on their website, but if you are a battery hogging traveller, keep an eye out for it.

Silicon Dust

silicon dust logoIf you are a home theater enthusiast or HTPC owner, as I am, then you have probably heard of Silicon Dust and the HD Home Run. The box has been out for some time and retails for $199, but can be found somewhat cheaper in many locations.

The box takes a cable card and then sends its data out via ethernet to the rest of your network and, as a bonus, it contains 3 tuners. The data is distributed to your network in both ATSC and MP2 format. It all works great with many of your screens, but now Silicon Dust wants to solve the problem with devices like smartphones and tablets.

The new box is a 4 tuner version that can handle hardware transcode that transfers that MP2 and changes it to H.264. Now customers can send 4 separate streams independent of each other and have access to the data on mobile devices as well. It is also smart enough to recognize the difference in screens and resolution and encode for the device. All of this is done behind the scenes.

This latest Home Run box will be available in late spring or early summer. While no price is yet available, the company hopes to keep it in the same area as the previous version.

Olloclip

Olloclip The Olloclip is a three way lens that you clip to the corner of the iPhone or iPod Touch and it goes over the lens of the phone. It works with the iPhone 4/4S, the iPhone 5 and the iPod Touch 4, 4s and the 5th generation iPod Touch. The lens can work as a fish eye, a macro lens or a wide-angle lens. The macro has 10x magnification, the wide-angle doubles your field of view and the fish eye gives you a 180 field of view. It comes in a pouch.

They are going to release a case that works with the Olloclip in March. Currently most people who have a Olloclip either use it without a case or an easily removable case. The new case has a tripod mount in both landscape and portrait mode. It also has an option for cold shoe mount for a light or microphone, It will work with a regular shoe mount. The Olloclip works with any photo application including Instagram, Flicker and Camera+. The Olloclip is available for $70.00, the website, at Best Buy, Amazon and other retail stores.
