Microsoft's decision not to retrofit security updates for IE for any other version besides Windows XP has a lot of people upset. Imagine if you are on a limited income and can not afford to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Also what if you are corporate entity and you have 1000's of PC's that run windows 2000.
Their is a simple answer for those running Windows 2000, switch to Firefox but that still leaves the Poor to fend for themselves. They are the ones that are more likely to not have up to date virus protection, firewalls or spyware software. So much for their security incentive. Bad Bad Microsoft. [Dan Gillmor]

How did the “Poor” buy their PC's in the first place? And if Microsoft even *did* retrofit their security-fixes, how many “Poor” consumers would be savvy enough to even know about potential issues with their software, let alone go through the motions to install the fixes? After all, if they don’t even have up-to-date AV or FireWall software what makes you think they’d keep up to speed on their OS and Browser fixes?
Concerning corporations I can *almost* see where you’re coming from. But Microsoft already provide bulk discounts to corporate licensees — from Windows XP upgrades to the full Office Suite. If a company is concerned about securiry they would surely find the means to update their Windows 2000 to Windows XP, and the impact on their budget would be negligible.
I’m not “Pro-Microsoft”, but I’m sure not “Pro-bash Microsoft if they don’t bend over backwards to satisfy the Universe” either. Also, from a developers point-of-view it is more intelligent to keep maintaining the current code-base than to try and update the old, and implement a discount scheme for your customers so they can upgrade. Yes, Microsoft do offer this.

I agree entirely with Mr. Brownstone, if you are still runing Windows 98 it is time to upgrade. I don't feel that MS should have to retrofit for all, it is time to move on to bigger and better? things!
Just my opinion. Btw great site.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I just like looking out for the consumer. After all the customer is always right.
