I noticed my server being a little sluggish today, and when I looked at my log files was blown away. 880,000 plus attempts to deliver comment spam to this site in a 13 hour period. At some points in the day I was seeing as many as 28 attempts a second.
All of these attempts were coming from 32 IP’s from a broadband provider in Canada. By adding some rules to the firewall I was able to minimize the impact they were having.
MovableType did a good job handling the attack but my MySQL database grew to record proportions and I had to delete the junk comment folder a couple of times.
There really has to be a better way. I wonder how much of my bandwidth these people burned up today.

I have found the Bad Behavior http://www.homelandstupidity.us/software/bad-behavior/ and Akismet http://akismet.com/ plugins to have stopped most of my spam comments.
The good thing about Bad Behavior is that it blocks the actual http request, so it doesn't use the bandwidth.
