No FIOS in Hawaii and Limited High Speed Bandwidth Options

As we are now in the middle of our move to our new home I was hoping to find some alternative high speed options. Currently I have Cable Broadband as provided by Oceanic Cable which is part of Time Warner. I also have a ClearWire connection and hopefully the coverage maps are correct as I am not a 100% positive that it will work in our new home.

Calling the local phone company all they have is crappy 3mps DSL the are I am in even though it is a swarming new development area does not have a central switch close enough to me to get higher speed service.

Which like many other people in the country I am essentially pounding my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get more bandwidth without breaking the bank.

It is not that the download speed is the issue it is the push speed that absolutely blows here. I pay for the turbo service with road runner and that is supposed to get me 512kbs upstream but it never really comes close to that.

For as small as Hawaii is you would think we would be a natural fit for FIOS but from what I can tell we will probably never see it here.

Broadband in the US is not that impressive and for that matter, not that cheap for what we receive.

I use Clearwire now, but in all honesty, there are times when it's not that much faster than dialup. Especially if you use it for streaming video or uploading video. And for $44/Month, Clearwire is far too expensive of a service for what they provide.

But since Clearwire is supposed to be 'wireless' as they say and I move around often, it's far easier and cheaper in the long run.

I know with Comcast and Qwest, I've had to pay a "setup" fee and other connection fees if I moved. Even when if I was a current subscriber.

I had an argument with both Qwest and Comcast in the past because both companies were going to charge me something like $99 for a connection and setup fee. And I was a subscriber to both companies. Talk about not caring about existing customers.

My explanation for not needed a setup was that I know how to setup my computer to connect to the internet. I didn't need anybody to come out.

Comcast explained somebody had to come out and turn the service on..Qwest did the same thing.. Like I said I move around often and I try to find the best possible service.

And since over the past year or so I've lived in apartment or condo buildings, the fact was a lot of people either had Comcast or Qwest.. The buidlings even had deals with one or the other.

I find it hard to believe anybody really needed to come out to "set me up" It was more like a rip off fee.

As far as Fiber optic, Verizon supposidly offers it in Seattle, but when I asked them about it, they told me where I lived was "Comcast" terriroty and they couldn't provide it to me.. But they could offer me crappy DSL service".

Why are they allowed to give me DSL but not fiber optic?

Who knows, but I'm still searching for better broadband connection speeds, prices and companies..

Good luck Todd.
