Gawker Media is now Old Media

I had to laugh today when I read Gawker Media is going to pay performance bonuses to Bloggers on their network based on the traffic the drive to the site makes me really sit back and ask why?

Some of the Gawker Media blogs are top notch. They are probably read by a lot of people that are influential in the community. So why now are they worried about page views.

Is it that the revenue they are generating is solely reliant on the number of page views that they now have to push their editors to focus solely on driving page views.

Again folks my thoughts is that Audience numbers / Page Views are not important its the influences and engagement of those that do subscribe. It has been a long time since Gizmodo or Engadget have influenced a purchase of mine.

The reason is pretty simple I don’t feel that they are that objective. They say they are bloggers but to me their content is a breeding ground for content being feed to them by PR and marketing people. ValleyWag

A Merry Christmas for some

I hope everyone that was celebrating holidays had a great time. With 42C heat New Years in Melbourne was as much an endurance event as a celebration (110F for the unmetricated). The music industry did not enjoy a Merry Christmas with revenues down 20% over the last holiday season. The reasons for this will surprise no-one. A move to online purchases has been accompanied by a decline in album sales, with people more likely to cherry pick the good songs out rather than pay for the poor filler songs quickly put together to fill up the album by the release date.

The smaller and boutique music labels may still strive for the album nirvana of "All killer, no filler!" but in the world of the pop charts, there is no focus on making a good album. Writing a good song is not easy and in a short sighted world it is not economical to waste those resources on a single new artist. Better to give them one or two "hit" songs and fill up the album with cheaper material. If the artist manages to make it past the first album and get a big enough following they can put more effort in to a known return from a bigger fan base.

I say in a short sighted world because although it has given record companies more control over their artists (and hence the money) in the short term, they have changed the dynamic of at least part of the industry. The relationship with the artist is what drives people to purchase everything they produce, and that is created by the emotional connection between the person and the music. It is hard to do this with a single (although definitely does happen) and much easier to do this with a well thought out, artistically crafted album that you can play over an over.

I am probably starting to sound a bit like a grumpy not-that-old-yet man. I discussed this infomally with somem friends as we sweltered through the new year, and while we remembered some of the hit songs from our youth they did not bring back the memories of the time like the albums. We recalled artists like The Knack, Carl Douglas, Toni Basil and The Buggles we wouldn't dream of buying anything more than the one memorable song each of them put out. Meanwhile most of us spoke of a concert that we had recently attended or planned to attend of an artist that while aging had touched us in our youth through one or more albums. The Cure, Neil Diamond, The Police, Black Sabbath, David Bowie and even one mention of Bon Jovi, although most of the bands we wished would tour are not likely to. All the people in this group were Gen-Xers, but if you have a similar discussion with your own friends I am sure you will get similar discussions with sligthly different bands.

Art is an emotional thing, and does not sit easily with commercialisation, and cannot be built on an assmbly line. In trying to control the industry the record companies have messed with the art and alterred the connection between artist and fan. This is starting to effect their sales and will likely continue to. The problem for the industry is that the top 100 is where the youth enter the market. Boomers and Gen-Xers continue to buy music today because of their emotional connection to the medium. If the current generation do not develop that bond, where will the music industry get its growth from in the future.

Best green tech 2007 - Print on solar panels

The problem solar panels have had to date is that they are more expensive than coal power ($3/W to $1/W). This is only really a problem of scale and funding though as is proven by the Nanosolar Powersheet which won the Popular Science Green Tech Grand Award for 2007. While they are no more efficient than the current solar cells, their manufacturing process makes them cheaper and quicker to produce while also making them more versatile.

By printing a layer of solar cells that use no silicon onto a wide range of materials as thin as a sheet of aluminium foil, these panels can be produced for a tenth the cost of traditional solar panels. And this is not just a pipe dream, funding from Larry Page and Sergey Brin have helped them build a plant that can produce 430 MegaWatts of panels a year and shipped their first batch of panels in December and have pre-orders for an entire years worth of production.

Good advise on protecting your privacy

Tom Lee over on Techdirt has a well written post on Scoble's banning from Facebook for violating its privacy terms. The dispute in question is that Robert used a Plaxo script (a beta developed script written by Plaxo) to transfer his Facebook contacts (name address and birthday) into Plaxo. Facebook claimas it is a violation of their privacy policy to extract user information with a script. Scoble believes that he only transferred information he could access manully. Other suggested that he should not be penalised himself for using a feature of a companies site he did not develop himself, and that Facebook is engaged in restraint of trade by trying to prevent Plaxo from gaining any information on their network.

This is not new ground for Scoble having previously been suspended on Secondlife for allowing his under 18 son to use his account. I think this issue will probably involve a lot of noise but is unlikely to lead to much. The title of Tom Lee's article is fantastic advise though

Blogger Room at CES

We are in the blogger room at CES in the Sands and it is very different than the press room. First its much much smaller so dependent on the number of bloggers here it could get crowded but we are in the sands a much smaller venue than the main hall over at LVCC. They have a flat screen TV up, and a couple of couches along with some tables with computers.

Missing is the back room with all of the press kits and b roll video. We were told we can go to the press room and pick up that stuff. But all told there are 12 computers to use and enough Lan connections and power dongles for at least twice that number of more laptops.

Sadly no lockers, I had suggested lockers last year when we did our post CES follow up with the team last year. Lockers would make life really good as we could stash computers and such and not have to hump it all.

With no one in the room the download speed was an impressive 17816kbs down and 5447kps so this may be the place to push quick videos during the day.

Update we pushed a video to Blip and it took about 10 minutes somehow they are throttling the uploads which is disappointing

So we will see how things go here. Nice to see CES supporting the bloggers.

GNC-2008-01-05-1 #334 Pinnacle Video Transfer Press and Go

Pinnacle Systems had a very impressive new product at CES Unveiled. The demonstrated their new "Video Transfer" product dubbed Press and Go.

Press and Go is a very good term for this device and it is brilliantly simple to use. You can plug and Analog Video feed into it and encode real time into a Apple iPod, Sony PSP, USB Memory stick.

They were playing a "Home DVD" ;) and encoded it real time into the Sony PSP, iPod, Memory Stick. While not the first product to do this Neuros has a device that will do similar thing the price point on this will definitely compete with Neuros.

CES-TPN-2008-01-05-4 Pulse Link Wireless HDMI

Andy McCaskey from Slashdot Review takes the lead on this Interview

Imagine you hang a flat screen TV on the wall plug the power in and thats it. Coming to a retail store close to you soon is Wireless HDMI Flat Screens.

The picture coming out of this TV was flawless. The wireless HDMI uses a transmitter that can be placed up to 30ft away and when sets are released next year with the receivers built into them you will not need to run HDMI cable to TV that is on a wall you do not want to have to tear down and rebuild to hide the HDMI wires. Check out the cool stuff the folks at PulseLink.net are doing

GNC-2008-01-05-4 #336 Novatel U7272 USB EV-DO Card

I am a big fan of Novatel USB EV-DO cards and was chomping at the bit to get a look at the new one that they have out.

The new card is the U727 and what makes this USB EV-DO stick special is that not only does it have a antenna port that they are known for but you also no longer need to run through a splitter to run the USB device on two USB connections which an older model required.

The next thing that makes this device nice is a port for 4gb memory card so the U727 can double as a memory device. For those on Sprint it also has a built in GPS which will allow you to use the card with mapping programs.

Retails for $79.99 with a two year contract on either Sprint or Verizon. I personally like the slime design and new antenna configuration.

What if I told you that you could remove all virus protection from your computer. Disable any firewalls and replace all of that technology with a USB stick that would re-route your internet connection through the Gatekeeper Pico card and provide you the same level of protection.

Yoggie Security has a new device that they claim does just that. Their thought is you can remove all of the spyware, virus and firewall protection software and have a faster computer by protecting your computer with their USB www.yoggie.com

CES-TPN-2008-01-05-9 Parrot Motorcycle Wireless Headsest

Andy McCaskey takes the lead on this Interview www.slashdotreview.com

If you are a motorcycle buff you will want to keep your eyes open for the Parrot SK4000 wireless headset. It apapts to any helmet and has great communications with an exposed mic.

What makes this wireless headset different is that it is really smart it takes voice commands to dial your cell phone, change the radio station, play a different track on your media player.

A very robsut system that even has handlebar controls that work with motorcycle drivers with gloves on.

I am very proud to accept this award, it is largely my listening audience that makes the show great, they are all part of my Ohana (Family). I have always strived to make the Geek News Central website, and podcast a great resource to go for information on Technology, Science and Podcasting. I work very hard to come up with informed opinions on topics I cover. My show is also a venue to get the word out on what we are doing at my company RawVoice. I have a team that works tirelessly to make sure that Podcast creators that we work with are treated fairly in the podcast business space.

I want to thank all of you for being such large supporters and thanks to the folks over at podcast.com for considering and awarding the show.

CO2 back to petrol

The frustration with the attitude we have taken in addressing global climate change concerns is some of the cool technologies that could be already but have not been able to get funding. Now that the general public opinion, and therefore government concern, is directed towards the potential detrimental effects of fossil fuel use there is money available to get research into some of these missed technologies.

The enormous leaps being made in wind and solar power are meaning they are starting to become cheaper than coal power production. Another very cool technology that is being researched is the ability to scrub carbon dioxide in the air and transforming it back into hydrocarbons. The team and Sandia National Labs are using a solar furnace to alternatively heat and cool cobalt ferrite which allows it to turn carbon dioxide in carbon monoxide and oxygen. The CO is highly reactive and can be used to easily create more complex hydrocarbons like methanol or even gasoline.

Even if you are not convinced that global warming exists, it would still be better if we were not breathing in the gasses from cars and coal fired power plants. And oil can be used for many more things that are useful in our lives than powering cars. And if we can convert the CO2 in the air back into those useful hydrocarbons at a reasonable price then we are all better off.

The "green" sector is definitely starting to produce some cool tech.

Sony, will you ever learn!

I despair of Sony ever deciding to do anything to make their customers life simpler. Sony-BMG have announced they are facing up to reality and releasing music without DRM. In typical style for the current Sony management, they cannot even do the right thing right. Rather than just release their catalog to one of the existing online distributers like iTunes or Amazon in unprotected form, they are releaseing only 37 albums and they are available only from Sony's Musicpass store. The details of the albums they are releaseing are in their press release.

And just to turn a bad idea into a completely stupid one, they have created a long and complicated process to buy an album online.

1 - Go to a store, that's right an actual physical trip to a store like BestBuy or Target where you could also buy the physical CD while you are there.
2 - Buy a "Platinum MusicPass" gift card for $12.99
3 - Scratch said card for a code number to validate an album purchase
4 - Go back home and log into MusicPass
5 - Use your code to buy an album from the extensive selection of 37 available.
6 - Wonder why you have no option to buy an individual song
7 - Step into the room of mirrors and have a good long look at yourself, trying in vain to rationalise that what you have done to purchase some music is superior in any way to any other method of getting music.
8 - Resolve to never buy anything Sony sells ever again for fear that their stupidity might somehow rub off on you.

A similarly incredulous blogger on Dvorak Uncensored posts an amusing comparison to a potential new pizza puchasing system.

[It was unbelievably hard to write this post expletive free!]
