Dear Yahoo!:

It’s time. Time to make a decision. Time to stop holding onto the past. Time to realize you were on the top of game in 2000, but now it’s 2011. Time to see that Yahoo! is Yahover.

Can you turn the company around as Jerry Yang talked about during AsiaD in Hong Kong? Anything can happen. But you are not willing to put the money in to do that. Investors are weary and you have no leadership.

If I was your business analyst (and that isn’t even my profession), I would tell you what I tell other companies that choose not to sell:

1. Change your name
2. Set a new 2-year business plan
3. Get a CEO that knows Social Media
4. Re-build your look and feel
5. Re-build your clientele

Did I just say “Change your name?” YES! When I hear Yahoo! I think of a company that was on top of their game back in 2000. Eleven years later and I don’t associate Yahoo! with today. I associate Google, Microsoft or Facebook. I even have a better chance of associating AOL  with 2011 over Yahoo!

Even the best business person will buy land just for the land. They’ll strike down the building and create a new epicenter. If the roof leaks and the foundation is shaky; if the building takes more energy to keep going, then rebuilding might take less money than repairing.

I wouldn’t fret, though. You really helped shape the Internet. You should be proud of that. Now it’s time to save what’s left of the company and maybe put together a new venture. I hear Microsoft is putting together a bid, among others. It’s not going to be $31 a share as in 2008, but I would guess it will be comparable.

If you are going to keep it, then find someone that can turn this company around. Get a CEO that knows what’s going on in the new media space. Someone that is active in Social Media. Someone that will bring new blood into the company.

Huffington Post

For anyone that wonders why AOL got into bed with Huffington Post, here is your answer. People use the site. At least, that is what HuffPo says and we believe.

Last month, Huffington Post claimed they hit 1 billion page views in the month of August. With as much diversity that the post has, I wouldn’t be surprised. With the growth of the site in the last 30 days, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hit 2 billion a month by early next year.

So how are they doing this right?

Sites with Communities

This seems to become a new trend – divvy up a site into several niche markets. Make the site feel like it caters to what you like. If you cannot group people in one big circle, make little circles and put all the numbers together in the end.

The announcement also talked about the purchase of “Localocracy” – an “online town common where registered voters using real names can weigh in on local issues.” This could bring the HuffPo to your local community. Get news and comment on it.

The HuffPost 50 is another good example. They call it the “Internet Newspaper”. You can get a little bit of everything on this page. You can scan the front page, find the one thing you like, read it, and move on.

Top Name Site Hires

This is how part of the press release reads:

The Huffington Post Media Group announces today the launch of four destination sites: Huff/Post50 (www.huffingtonpost.com/50), HuffPost Gay Voices (www.huffingtonpost.com/gay-voices) and HuffPost Weddings (www.huffingtonpost/weddings). Each offers HuffPost’s unique combination of real-time news and opinion, and passionate communities powered by a leading social news platform.

HuffPost/50 — whose Editor-at-Large is actress, producer and writer Rita Wilson — covers the challenges, complexities and joys facing the boomer generation, now 77 million people strong. It spotlights boomers who fearlessly tackle new challenges in the spirit of reinventing themselves, regardless of age, and encourages boomers to question conventional wisdom about aging. Topics being covered include: longevity, relationships and sex, politics, the intense “sandwich” pressure of simultaneously taking care of aging parents and children, retirement, spirituality and religion, friendship, politics and dying.

Not only did it announce new communities in LGBT and Wedding categories, it also put a staff together that includes comedian Margaret Cho, Heidi Klum, and other celebrities in their respected fields.

Engagement

It’s amazing to see how many people “Like” an article. Whereas a site has a good day with 34 likes on an article, HuffPo good post would see 1000x the traffic. For example – their “Arrested Development is back” post produced 79,000 likes.

Integrating the Facebook Factor really helps. Then again, their social comment section also adds community response, which – in turn – can be posted back to the social networks. I guess the day of the forum is really dead.

So in a nutshell, Huffington Post is a community site. You can go to get your tech fix, political fix, LGBT fix, and more. It  has news, commentary, pictures, video and so much more. Of course, it’s staff of bloggers and reporters is pretty impressive. So 1 billion page views is not surprising. With addtional website acquisitions, the 2 billion view mark a month is very possible.

I used to get a lot of pleasure in bashing AOL when they would send me literally thousands of CD’s that all ended up in the land-fill. I even told my buddies who had stock in AOL, that they better unload it while the getting was good. Every last one of them wishes today that they had taken my advice as they lost 100′s of thousands of dollars on the stock when the AOL stock collapsed.

So the whole debacle about Mike Arrington, the CrunchFund, Arianna Huffington then Mike’s final ultimatum left AOL with a decision to make. This evening the folks at Fortune say Mike is officially out. You can see the vultures circling from a variety of second rate start-up sites, because these sites have been getting their butts kicked for so long by Mike’s crew, they now see blood in the street and are gonna try and swoop in for the kill.

The next question is how many of the excellent writers at TechCrunch are now gonna bail? We will see how many of them pick a paycheck over loyalty to Mike. My bet is we “will not” see a mass exodus from TechCrunch, but what we will see is that website turn into another piece of crap site that AOL now has editorial controls. Mark my words this decision by AOL is gonna end up being the beginning of the end of AOL as people know it today.

Ohh an lets not forget, that their is the TechCrunch Disrupt event next week, and if Mike is missing from that event, it will likely be it’s last. I am sure the TechCrunch crew are just gonna love working for Arianna Huffington when she peers down at them with her beady eyes and says obey slaves.

I spend some time at the beginning of the show tonight talking about the tragic loss of life and issues facing Japan. The massive earthquake hits Japan just as I start my show, we are under a Tsunami Warning here in Hawaii with first strike due at 3am local. Based on what has happened in Japan it could be bad. On Monday Facebook will be making a special announcement, the latest rumor is that they are going to be announcing an email program that is run through Facebook. If this rumor is true, then to me this is a step backward to the walled gardens of yesterday. If you’ve were on the Internet in the 1990′s and early 2000′s then you remember AOL at its height. You would get the disk in the mail pop it in your computer and you were in the AOL universe. Want the news sure you could have it as long as it was what AOL said was the news. Entertainment no problem as long as you wanted what AOL had to offer. For a long time this was the Web to a lot of people. It was safe and seemed to have everything you wanted. Of course those who were computer savvy knew that the Web was a whole lot larger and the Web itself was only a small part of the the larger Internet. AOL was just one room in a house standing in the middle of a huge world. Once people knew that there was a larger web out there then AOL felt like a prison rather then a garden. Happily with the explosive growth of broadband and the decline of dialup the AOL walled garden broke down and the Web opened up for most people

To me Facebook is rebuilding that walled garden and many people are happy to play all day in that garden. There seems to be everything you need there games, music, news video and according to the rumors starting soon email. Everything you could want, except what happens when or if you want to leave, how easy is it to get or stuff back, your pictures, your videos. Or God forbid you get banned from Facebook, which can happen and does. Many times the person who is banned doesn’t know why and it can take awhile to correct the problem. Meanwhile you can’t get to anything on Facebook, image if this happened and your email was in Facebook. I realize this is a bit of dooms day talk, but it does happen.

I want to make it clear I not against Facebook, I use it all the time to keep up with my family and friends. However I make sure that when I add something to Facebook, like a picture or video I also upload them to my own Web site, which I own. It’s important that you have a place that you own for the important things you put on line. If you can’t afford a Web site then at least upload your pictures and videos to multiple sites. Also make sure there is a way to get the media back if you want to leave a site. What ever happens Monday I’m sure it will be the talk of both the tech world and the social media world. It will be interesting to watch.

Seeing the buzz around this I am pretty sure that the rumors are true then indeed this is a pretty amazing turn of events. The question to be asked is what’s next Jason? I know that he is doing a podcast over on Podtech and that makes me wonder if he is going to get more heavily involved in that space or will he try something else.

But regardless what he does, whether it be a new startup, lead another company or just take some time off I am sure that he will continue to be a major force in the new media online space. [TechCrunch]

Well if you’re one of 500,000 randomly selected users on AOL, you may be surprised to know that they’ve released your search terms. Yes, every search term that you have typed in over a period of time is now available to be downloaded over the Internet.

Considering how personal some searches can be I can only attest that this is quite shocking, it would not take a rocket scientist very long at all to figure out who was conducting the searches. Are you and AOL user and how do you feel about this? [www.ugcs.caltech.edu]

Well seems a day after AOL said they were going to be giving away access to their site they have decided that being free means less money coming in so that equates to laying people off. This is going to put a lot of people out of work. I imagine with that layoff there will be marketing and sales people on the hunt for jobs.

I was forced to use a AOL account at a relatives house 4 or 5 years ago, it was the first time on the service, the experience was not pleasant and the bloated interface was horrible. Needless to say my impression before, after and now have not changed.

AOL filled a need back when people could not get overcome the technological hurdles to get on the net, that is why most respecting tech folks were never members of their service. The AOL bashing died down a long time ago but for many of us it still leaves a bad taste in our mouths everytime we read or hear the words AOL.

The question is now that they are going to make AOL free for broadband users is this. Does this mean I have to put there invasive interface on my computer? Or will I and others even take the time to check out AOL now that it is going to lower the gangway to it’s walled fortress.

Personally I do not thing so but I do have a prediction, those that are still paying and on dial up are going to leave in hordes and upgrade to broadband or ASDL because for many this may give them enough comfort to make the switch, second those of us that have not used AOL before will not now, given they are under pressure to make money I predict that they will not and Time Warner will be faced with a decision to close the service in less than 3 years or parcel it out to companies that want to buy small chunks of it.

I keep telling people if you have stock in AOL aka Time Warner sell. After seeing there so called retention manual, I can only imagine the agony those poor customer service people had to go through. This thing was definitely written by someone that owns a serious amount of stock in the company, as no person in there right mind would design this. [consumerist.com]

If this headline smells funny wait till you read the associated post, but the crux is this, if your a top poster at some of the top social sites like Digg, Flickr etc they are willing to pay you a $1000.00 a month for those skills over at Netscapes new site. But hey if I had the money backing behind me that Jason does I could not even imagine the amount of traction I would be able to put forth in the podcasting space.

When your building a site on sheer determination, no sleep, and a heck of a lot of heart there is only one thing in the end that will spur the success of the site and that is making sure the podcasters get paid so you can stay in business.

Hell if I had 1 or 2 kick butt marketing/sales people we could definitley move forward quicker. The key is finding people with heart that understand the space and are willing to work like a dog for a startup. It’s tough but hey thats what building a company is all about. The question is are you that person that can kick butt? I definitely need you!

Imagine your paying $14.95 per month for your AOL account that you are using largely for e-mail to only start getting advertisements jammed into e-mail. This has to be the most stupid move I have heard about. AOL is nothing more than a over priced ISP, for them to do this is beyond comprehension.

When you have a free account place somewhere you expect ads, this will add another nail in AOL’s coffin. [InfoWorld]

If the plan for AOL was to compete with MySpace with AIM Pages then by the look of the site today it is dead on arrival. Heck it does not even work in Firefox and some are saying even Safari users are having trouble. The site reminds me of GeoCities from the 80′s in fact I wonder if they actually used some of that code. [www.aimpages.com]

Update: This post by Jason Calacanis is an indication that he has drank to much of the AOL Koolaid. Your kidding Right?

I use Trillian to eliminate the need for four instant message clients running on my desk. This morning when I fired up the laptop I had this message waiting for me from AOL

“AIM added a new AIM Bots group to your Buddy List. AOL System Messate: Send IMs to moviefone and shoppingbuddy for great holiday flicks and gift ideas. (To remove ‘em, just right-click and delete! Learn More)”

Do you really think I wanted these Bots added by AIM to my buddy list? Needless to say I took 10 seconds right clicked and deleted them.

I don’t even have to say how big this is, THIS IS HUGE, purportedly they are getting between 20 and 35 Million.
