MovableType gets performance boost

Posted by geeknews at 4:42 PM on January 18, 2007

The folks over at SixApart have been looking at the performance of MovableType and have some recomendations for those of you that upgrade to the latest version 3.34. Those that have their own servers or that are on hosting accounts can install FastCGI to get as much as a 15x increase in performance in their existing installations.

I will be adding the FastCGI support here, and we will see how much it helps when the site is under a comment spam attack. [www.sixapart.com]

Putting ones Dirty Laundy on the Interent is not being smart

Posted by todd at 1:24 AM on December 21, 2006

It seems some Bloggers love to air their own dirty laundry on their blogs. For those that are gossip mongers I am sure that type of material really gets the juices flowing. I must admit that I love industry gossip. But the type of gossip I am looking for is not usually associated with  a deal gone bad or someone getting fired.

Here is some advice, when you have a business deal go bad close the door talk about it, learn from it and move on. When you fire someone do it in private and if a public statement has to be made, be as gracious as possible and leave the dirt off the net. If someone calls looking for a reference then you can say your piece otherwise when I and many others look to do business with you we will likely avoid ya like the plague because loose cannons can cost companies and projects millions of dollars.

PayPerPost gets a Partial Clue

Posted by todd at 4:00 PM on December 17, 2006

One of the companies that has been on my Web Based Evil Empire list has been PayPerPost, yesterday they took the first step to getting off the list. They are now going to require full disclosure on paid blog postings.

They still have one step to go though to get fully off my list. They need to eliminate the option that advertiser require the post be positive. I think any company that is willing to allow a group of bloggers write about their product publicly for pay, should also be willing to take the good with the bad.

Here is one thing I will be doing when I see a blog post for a product or service that falls in the tech category that is a PayPerPost blog post. I am going to do my own unbiased review and see how it compares with the PayPerPost postings. If enough people do this, then PayPerPost and the associated bloggers who inflate posts will be shamed when they cross the line. [TechCrunch.com]

No HARD questions for Bill Gates how come?

Posted by todd at 3:07 PM on December 14, 2006

I am really disappointed with the Bloggers that went to Microsoft yesterday and got to meet with Bill Gates. I was pretty excited to read the commentary on their blogs but highly disappointed that none of them asked hard questions.

Frankly it pisses me off that none of them could ask a  hard question, here are a few question that I would have asked.

  • Why is the Wifi in the Zune Crippled?
  • What are the changes to the Zune that will be made due to the public bashing Microsoft has taken?
  • Why has Microsoft Ignored Podcasting?
  • When is Microsoft going to live up to a promise to make Windows security a #1 priority?
  • Why is Microsoft ignoring Citizen Fair use Rights and buckling to the RIAA and MPAA?
  • With it’s worldwide dominance why does it take so long to get a new Operating System out of Redmond?
  • When will Microsoft put security tools on the Windows desktop that really protect consumers, versus face saving applications that have been released today that are ineffective?

In my humble opinion these are hard questions that are worthy of being asked of one of the most powerful business men in the world. I would not have asked what’s on his Zune as Steve Rubel did, he should of asked how come Microsoft launched Zune when it was clearly not ready!

What serious questions would you have asked Bill Gates. I will compile your list and post them here next week and then mail them off and see if he can answer questions that come from people that are passionate about Microsoft Technology and not what’s on his Christmas list. Word of Mouth Marketers Must now Disclose Relationships

Posted by todd at 1:09 PM on December 13, 2006

FtcFor the first time in a long time a decision by the FTC may actually have a positive effect to some bad things that have been happening on the Internet. Primarily that word of mouth marketers may soon be forced to disclose when they have a financial relationship with a vendor.

Some bloggers, podcasters and others have been criticised in recent times for not disclosing when they have been paid an incentive to talk about a product. For example I do reviews on products from time to time here. While I never guarantee a favourable review I always try to put a disclaimer on the review the company has sent me a loaner unit.

This action if enforced will cause sites like PayPerPost to enforce disclosure among those that have been promoting products they have been paid to review.

As many of you remember several years ago I was involved in the Marqui pay to blog program. That promotion was a terrific success not only for Marqui but it also set a standard in which bloggers were asked to disclose the relationship and bloggers were told to say what they wanted to say positive or negative. Jason Calacanis reportedly has left AOL

Posted by todd at 6:41 PM on November 16, 2006

Seeing the buzz around this I am pretty sure that the rumors are true then indeed this is a pretty amazing turn of events. The question to be asked is what’s next Jason? I know that he is doing a podcast over on Podtech and that makes me wonder if he is going to get more heavily involved in that space or will he try something else.

But regardless what he does, whether it be a new startup, lead another company or just take some time off I am sure that he will continue to be a major force in the new media online space. [TechCrunch]

Somebody Screwed Chirs Pirillo!

Posted by todd at 11:09 PM on November 8, 2006

I don’t think I have ever seen Chirs Pirillo say anything negative on his Blog but someone must have really shafted him. The packing trucks where coming to move his household goods when all of a sudden the moving plans were canceled and he has apparently been sworn to secrecy as he is indicating he cannot say anything about the situation.

But a tell tale hint that it was related to a company in the blogging space is that he says this at the end of his post.

One thing is certain: my trust in the future of our industry (and the alleged transparency of the blogosphere) is at an all-time low.

Keep your head up Chris you have a lot of fans out here. [Chris Pirillo]
