PhaseHD Runs HDMI for 100ft

Posted by geeknews at 6:47 PM on February 20, 2013

PhaseHD Logo

HDMI is great interconnect technology but it’s really only designed for relatively short cable runs. What do you do if you want to send a 4K UltraHD picture 100ft? PhaseHD have the answer.

Canadian outfit phaseHD uses standard, albeit long, HDMI cables with smart adaptors on each end of the cable to transmit a clean signal at one end and boost the received signal at the other, while preserving the control signals needed for encrypted content. Obviously it’s more complicated than that and it’s definitely worth watching the video to understand how this technology differs from the video extenders that use cat 6 network cabling for long runs.

It’s not cheap either, with the expected price around $500-$600. Expect to see early adoption by event management companies and sports bars.

Device Renewal Forum Certifies Phone Reuse

Posted by Andrew at 7:10 PM on February 19, 2013

Device Renewal Forum

With over 2 billion wireless devices (mobile phones) produced every year, the recycling and reuse of these gadgets is an important environmental issue. Todd chats to Perry LaForge of the Device Renewal Forum about how many major companies are now approaching the issue.

The DRF’s mission is ”to expand the growth of the device renewal market through the development of a common and branded certification process for renewed wireless devices”, which means that for consumers, a DRF-certified device will have been properly processed, removing any traces of the previous owners data, and confirms that the phone meets the technical requirements for use on a mobile network. Several major companies, such as Sprint, are joining the scheme and for the sake of the planet, let’s hope the DRF is a success.

SimulTV brings live internet TV to you

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 5:42 PM on February 19, 2013

simultv logoInternet-based TV has been the promise for sometime now, but it has proven harder to deliver than expected. SimulTV is hoping to change that. The CEO, Steven Turner, stopped by TPN to talk a bit about the service.

The company licences its product and can provide the portions you need, without the ones you don’t — a-la-carte, in other words. Users can also share viewing  experiences through things like live chat as well as  register devices and move feeds from tablet to phone to TV.

The service works across all devices — computers, iOS, Android, etc. Check out the video below to see an example.

Skifta talks whole-home audio

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 11:39 AM on February 19, 2013

skifta logoQualcomm’s Skifta rep stopped by TPN  during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to talk a bit about its whole-home audio systems and its iOS launch.

The new iOS app allows users to stream media to AirPlay devices. This includes images, music and video regardless of where it is stored — phone, tablet, computer or NAS drive. You can even grab media from the cloud using something like Dropbox or SkyDrive. The app grabs the photos and then looks for a DLNA device to play the media to.

The Android app, which has been around for sometime now, functions in the same way. Both versions of the app are free to download and install.

The company is also creating an entire DLNA system for whole-home audio distribution. You can learn more about that, and the mobile apps, by watching the video below.

Active Video for Cloud TV

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 9:59 AM on February 18, 2013

active video logoActive Video is a company that has become involved with cloud TV, an up-and-coming platform that aims to change how many of us consume content today. Doug Casselini stopped by to visit TPN and talk a bit about his company and what it can do and what it plans to pursue.

Video is rendered in the cloud and then delivered to platforms like set-top boxes and smart TV’s. Unlike devices such as the Roku, which downloads content from the cloud in real-time as it streams, this service actually renders and streams from the cloud, meaning nothing is being downloaded. It all runs on a very small thin-client installed on the boxes.

To find out more information you can head over to Active Video for details.

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 10:03 AM on February 17, 2013

Red Touch Media talks about content management and delivery

Posted by Alan Buckingham at 9:16 AM on February 16, 2013

red touch media logoWayne Scholes stopped by the TPN broadcast area to talk a bit about Red Touch Media and its content delivery and management solutions. The company handles this on a rather large scale — think Sony, Paramount, etc.

The company not only delivers and tracks the media, but also provides the data analytics for its customers. This content is delivered to TV networks and eliminates the middle area, like DVD’s. The company also operates kiosks around the world where customers can download content using points they win playing games in locations like Dave and Buster’s.

You can learn a lot more by checking out the video below, including exactly how all of this works.
