Available in 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB capacities, the CF cards support the VPG-20 specification meaning the card has been tested and guaranteed for professional video capture streams at up to 20 MB/s. To get the video off the card, Lexar offer a high performance USB 3 card reader.

Included with the purchase of a Professional CF card is Lexar’s Image Rescue software (downloadable) which will help recover accidently deleted photos and videos from the card.

The new Lexar Professional 1000x CompactFlash card will be on-sale in February, though the 128 GB variant won’t be ready until April. Recommended prices are 16 GB – $169.99, 32 GB – $299.99, 64 GB – $529.99, and 128 GB - $899.99 (ouch!)

You might be wondering what significance the “1000x” is. The original CompactFlash cards had a transfer rate of only 150 kb/s which itself was based on the data transfer rate of CompactDiscs (CDs). Geek fact for the day.

Do world events have you rattled? Ever thought of learning to live off the grid?

Follow Frank Belcastro as he attempts to drag his family (sometimes kicking and screaming) toward his goal of being able to live completely on their own, off the grid.

“Independence USA” premieres on January 18, 2012 exclusively on GBTV.Com, Glenn Beck’s new streaming Internet-based television network. “Independence USA” is produced by GBTV and The WorkShop, L.L.C. whose team has produced shows for History, ESPN, ESPN Classic, Animal Planet, HGTV, trutv, Travel Channel, Lifetime, Discovery Channel, TLC, The Golf Channel, and Broadcast Syndication. The show will air weekly on Wednesdays.

The “Independence USA” trailer has hit reality show written all over it. In my opinion this is going to be a real game-changer for the concept of streaming video and new media. This is the first professional-quality TV series aimed at a mainstream reality TV audience produced exclusively for an Internet-based television network. Though networks have played around for years with streaming re-purposed television shows and movies, this is the first time a network is being built from the ground up, one module at a time to create a pay TV network for exclusive distribution on the Internet.

Will people subscribe to an Internet-only high definition TV network? The answer is, yes they absolutely will subscribe provided that the content is there. It’s highly likely that the addition of the “Independence USA” reality TV series will get many people over the hump and cause them to pay.

People already in the new media/streaming media space should welcome GBTV, because it is going to be a game-changer. It’s success will likely cause a bit of a land rush towards streaming. Devices such as the Roku are in a great position to reap those land rush benefits. The presence of professional level TV networks on the Roku will potentially have a bit of a “halo effect” for existing new media creators.

His television career included both CNN and the Fox News Channel. On Fox News, Glenn Beck had the most-watched nightly show of any of the cable TV news networks.

Recently, Glenn Beck left Fox News to form his own online streaming television network, GBTV, available at http://www.gbtv.com.

About a month ago, after viewing a few of the free Glenn Beck highlight clips from his two-hour nightly streaming television show, I took the plunge and subscribed.

I am very impressed with the production quality. GBTV, LLC currently has 120 employees. This is a genuine, highly-professional high definition television network that has a spectacular set and world-class production facilities that is just as good if not better than anything that Fox, CNN, etc. are capable of doing. Like any genuine television network, live streaming shows start and end right on time and incorporate a number of regular breaks. GBTV is creating genuine television programming that is broadcast directly to the Internet as opposed to satellite or cable distribution. As such, it removes the filter between the content creators and the end viewers, yet high broadcast standard production values are maintained throughout which lends what GBTV is doing an aura of genuine excitement. Real multi-camera live HD broadcasts can be sent directly to subscribers, thus eliminating the cable/satellite middleman.

There are a variety of subscription plans, including monthly and yearly plans. One can subscribe for $4.95 per month, or $49.95 per year. I subscribed to “GBTV Plus” for $99.95 per year, which includes the 6 camera HD shoot of the daily Glenn Beck Radio Show along with other streaming television programs that are coming onto the streaming service. GBTV is in the process of becoming a full-fledged streaming television network that has ultra high production values along with impressive content. Subscription plans include a 14-day free trial.

GBTV currently can of course be viewed on a computer. Other devices include the Roku, as well as iPad and iPod/iPhone apps. All programs remain available for streaming any time for a period of 30 days before dropping off.

I cut the satellite cord more than a year ago, because I felt I wasn’t getting $100 dollars per month worth of value out of my satellite programming. I am more than willing to pay for good content, but I want it on my terms, on a variety of devices, and on my schedule. GBTV offers a tantalizing glimpse at the future of high production value TV content.

Rumors are circulating that the new HD user interface will start rolling out to DirecTV subscribers beginning November 1st. It’s been quite a while since DirecTV has done a complete revamping of their UI. For the past several years we have only seen minor tweaks and updates. Now, users of the HR20 and newer boxes, including the HR21, which is the most widely used version, are about to get a whole new experience.

DirecTV describes the new features as a “dazzling new look and feel, lightning fast scrolling, visual browsing experience, and personalized recommendations”. You can read about each feature by visiting DirecTV. They have also released a video tour of the new UI, which should really get subscribers excited.

Given that DirecTV has posted an official page showing off the UI and even posted a video tour, it seems safe to assume that a release is very close. If not November 1st then it should be sometime right around then. Likely it will be a gradual roll-out, so not all users will see it on day one, but once it begins, it should go quickly. The video tour is posted below.

The satellite and cable providers, namely Sky and Virgin Media, have been quick to offer HD on their subscription services, but the terrestrial digital broadcast system, Freeview, has been somewhat slower to offer HD. Some regions of the UK, e.g. Northern Ireland, will not have HD terrestrial broadcasts until 2012. Consequently, there’s been a great deal of uncertainty and misinformation.

So it’s fortunate that ConsumerChoices has added Freeview HD coverage to its HD Coverage Checker. By putting in your postcode and your house number, you’ll be presented with all the HD options available to you, including satellite, cable and terrestrial. In addition, for Freeview (terrestrial), the website will tell you which transmitter to use, how far away it is and the likely signal strength. If Freeview HD is not yet available in the area, it will give the expected date for it to be turned on.

With Freeview decoders now available in a range of products including set-top boxes and HD TVs, there’s often a small price premium to pay for the HD decoder over the standard definition. By using the HD Coverage Checker, you can make informed decision whether to go HD and pay more, or stick with the standard definition decoder.

The Colossus card is designed to record high definition video from sources such as an X-Box 360, Playstation 3, as well as high definition video coming from a cable TV or satellite box via component video outputs on those devices, thus avoiding the DRM problem. The Colossus HD Video Recorder retails for $169 dollars, available in the first week in February 2011. According to Plotkin, the Colossus is the only recorder solution available that can record high definition video from component video outputs.

The Bloggie 3D (MHS-FS3) is equipped with twin lenses, twin sensors and stereo microphone to properly capture the 3D perspective. Able to record both 3D or 2D video (as well as still photos), the content can be shown in 3D on the camera’s 2.4″ screen without glasses or else shown on any 3D capable HD TV with 3D glasses. I’d be interested in seeing the 3D playback on the Bloggie’s screen – sounds like a neat trick in pocket video cam. Expect it on the shelves in April

“As the popularity of pocket cameras grows, Sony can provide simple, compact video and photo solutions that are fun and easy to use,” said Melody Charlesworth, Category Marketing Manager for Bloggie. “With Sony paving the way in 3D entertainment, it’s the perfect addition to the Bloggie family and offers an easy yet high quality 3D solution.”

The Bloggie Duo (MHS-FS2) is the narcissist’s favourite coming with a 2″ front mounted LCD display in addition to the 2.7″ one on the back, making it really easy to get in on the fun while still taking video. I can see this model also becoming a favourite with video bloggers operating on their own. Available from March.

Finally, a new entry level Bloggie (MHS-FS1) will offer great performance at a great price, with HD MP4 video, 5.1 MP stills and 2.7″ screen. Also available from March.

All the models come with SteadyShot image stablilisation, face detection technology, auto-focus and auto-macro, HDMI output, USB arm and Bloggie software with Share-It-Later functionality. This will automatically upload video and photos to the most popular photo sharing and social networking websites as soon as the Bloggie is connected to a PC. Sony also offers its own Personal Space to keep friends and family updated with the latest photos and videos.

In addition to filming in full HD, 1920 x1080, the Bloggie can also record 360 degree video with a special clip on lens. I’ve no idea how this works but it’s quite intriguing. GNC is on the list for a review unit, so when I actually get my hands on one, I’ll let you know. The press release also mentions “freestyle shooting” which apparently allows you to capture video in both landscape and portrait mode. Again, no idea but will let you know.

Details that I do know are that the Bloggie has 8GB storage built-in and should record about 4hrs of video in 1280 x 720, though the battery will run out after about 2.5 hours. There’s a flip-out USB connector plus an HDMI connector for instant playback on a TV. Obviously the LCD screen can be used to review the video and stills but it also sounds like you can use the touch screen to select the photos and movies you want to upload to, say, Flickr, on the Bloggie and then when you actually connect the Bloggie to you PC or laptop, the material is automatically uploaded. That sounds pretty cool and a good compromise on a device that doesn’t have wireless.

You can peruse the full specs on Sony’s website.

It’s for pre-order on Sony’s website for £219 but should be available any day now.

The Envy 17 3D comes with active shutter glasses which wirelessly sync with the HD display giving a full 3D experience when viewing films or playing games that are “3D”.

Under the hood, it’s Intel quad core processors coupled with ATI Mobility Radeon graphics giving smooth Blu-ray playback and the cinematic experience is completed by Beats audio and a triple bass reflex sub-woofer.

Available for the holiday season and pricing not yet set.

Moving on to the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition, this is the one for the audiophiles. Featuring Beats Audio, a high-tech audio system developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre to deliver the best possible audio sound experience when listening through headphones or external speakers.

Inside, Intel i5 quad core CPUs do the heavy-lifting, complemented with 4GB RAM and Radeon HD5650 graphics.

The notebook itself comes in aluminium soft-touch finish, with the distinctive Beats black and red logo on the lid. In a refreshing change from the usual blue back-lit keyboards, the Envy 14 comes with red back-light. Nice.

To top-off the package, each Beats Edition notebook comes with a set of Beats Solo headphones from Monster. Very nice.

If I was in the market for a new notebook, I’d definitely be giving the Envy 14 consideration for its audio capabilities. Who am I kidding? I just want one because it looks cool.

The full spec is available on HP’s website and the Envy 14 Beats Edition is available now starting at $1250 (less a penny).

To round-off the multimedia extravaganza, the HP Wireless TV Connect will wirelessly stream full HD content from any HDMI-equipped laptop to an HDTV. The sender unit is powered via USB from the laptop, so there’s no need for additional power but obviously, it will drain the battery laptop faster.

Although apparently aimed at the consumer market, I can see this being a hit in the business presentation market where big screen HDTVs are replacing the traditional data projector. Available from October starting at $199.

I was able to pick up an LG monitor Model B233OH for a total of $257.00 including tax at the local Best Buy. I am using it as a media monitor. It was easy to put together, my husband simply snapped the base into the monitor and it was ready to set up.

The first thing I did was to use the HDMI input and connect that to my TiVo Series 3 DVR. I had I connected my Apple TV to the DVI input using a HDMI to DVI adapter I have. This is just a temporary set up until I can pick up an HDMI switcher. Right now I am not sure which one will give me the best value for its price. The next thing I did was to connect the TiVo to a Kenwood receiver I had. The receiver is about eight years old, so the only video connection it has are S Video, and composite video, because of this I decided to use it for audio only. I connected the TiVo to the DVD optical audio input. I used composite cables to connect the Apple TV to the Tape input on the receiver. I plan to pick up another optical audio cable, but for now the composite cables work fine. I then connected the speakers, two rear, two front and one center, with no subwoofer. Obviously, this is not an optimal setup, but it works and it was cheap.

After, having this set up for about three days I am happy with it for the most part. The picture is nice although during the daytime when the sun comes thru the blinds, there can be a problem with glare. This doesn’t last very long though and it depends on what angle you are watching from The sound is good. The biggest problem I have is getting Comcast HD to stay up, when it comes in its great, unfortunately I keep losing the signal. This unfortunately is a problem I can’t solve, other then that I am very happy with my set up. I do have a question for the readers, what HDMI switcher do you recommend and who should I purchase it from. I was looking at Buy.com, are they a good company to buy from? Any other recommendations?

In other words if you don’t like watching crappy Standard def channels on your big screen you now have a choice to get only the high quality HD channels starting at $30 per month with local channels. I understand that is their business model to give “free” equipment to get you hooked when you start out. My understanding when I signed up for service was that it is a once per lifetime deal. You can’t stop service then start again when you see a better deal. You can use a spouse to get another deal started I guess. I do feel slighted that being a customer in good standing, I can’t get the same options as a new customer who has not spent one dollar with Dish yet. I think the worry on their part is that too many folks will jump to the lower priced HD package and they will lose significant dollars. The word is that early next year current customers can jump to HD only so I am fine with that. I’d rather wait while Dish gets their plan together than have them lose a ton of money then go out of business 5 years from now because of dumb decisions.

I will definitely go HD only as soon as possible since I do not watch SD anymore. I am an HD elitist I suppose. When my buddy first got HD he said that he often watched a less interesting football game in HD instead of a better game in SD. I thought he was exaggerating but now I do the same thing. But now it is harder to find an SD game, which is a good thing. If not for sports and ESPN more specifically HD programming might not be as expanded as it is now. Football is the most watched sport in the USA so the fact that HD games have increased has only created demand for Hi Def in more programming.

Even though it takes longer to load (better off downloading) it looks so much better than Standard Definition. Mark Cuban has often dogged online HD as “not really HD” since the same content would not be HD on a big screen HDTV. I don’t know if that is true in every case but he should know since he owns HDNET. But the fact that the HD content online looks like Hi Def while viewing on a computer screen is all that matters. Perception is reality especially to the average non geek person. If it looks great to them they are not going to compare 10 different videos to see how much worse one looks than the other. Some content will never be viewed on a TV anyway. Stupid people falling down, ala youtube, only takes a minute to watch online at work or while waiting on an email. That stuff is not worth sitting down in the living room to watch. That said, it would still be better in Hi Def. I do some videos of my kids’ sports, my nephew’s sports, and local high school football with my Sony HD camera (consumer model). I share these online where family members can watch at work or while checking email. The best part of family or local content is that it can be easily shared. Watching a DVD of your child’s football game then waiting to see your sister to give her the DVD is a bit more time consuming than sending an email with the video in it. I normally do SD instead of HD just because of loading times and I know most people want to watch right then instead of downloading it.

There are a few sites that offer HD content: blip.tv, Vimeo, & Vuze. I like blip.tv since it is easy to use and I always get a human response to an emailed question. While content like major movies are much better in HD on TV that does not mean there is no room online for HD media. The right venue for the right content is the key. The phrase, “good enough for who it is for” also fits. Your Aunt Peggy in Florida will love your HD footage of your vacation. She won’t be comparing your media to a George Lucas production.

This unit connect to the iLink connection on a Sony Pro Video Camera and as you are recording to tape this unit will record the same video straight to the hard drive. The editing time savings in post production is worth the hefty price tag. Sadly the units are not due out until the middle of January but someone has to have some demo units.

If anyone has any connections to get one of these units early drop me a line geeknews[at]gmail.com [Sony]
