One of the main purposes of CES is for major business alliances to either be started or finalized, One such alliance was announced between Samsung and DirecTV involving multiple set-top boxes. A major irritation with having a multi TV home is it requires you to have a box either cable or satellite for each TV, well if you are a Samsung owner and DirectTV subscriber this problem maybe coming to an end. At CES 2011 Samsung and DirecTV announce an alliance which will allow a consumer to have one central server for multiple TV in a home. This is done by using the RVU protocol this protocol uses the combination of DLNA and [UPnP]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPnPAVmedia_server) both industry standards. No longer will you need a separate box for each TV.

This will be first available on certain Samsung smart TVs, the LED D6000, LED D6400 and LED 6420 series which should ship to stores in March. The central server will allow each TV to receive separate live programing. You can also record and play recorded program from it on to any connected TV. You can also use it to access content on any personal media player or computer that is on the same local network. It can be updated at anytime thru software update. Meaning that additional services can be added over time. It allows secure access of copyright material by the use of DTCP-IP (Digital Transmission Content Protection over Internet Protocol.) The RVU protocol can even work with 3D TV.

There is no reason this same protocol could not be used with any smart TV and service provider whether they are satellite or cable. Of course that would mean that they couldn’t charge you five dollars a month of each box, but I am sure they will find a way around that problem. I look forward to a time when this is available through my cable provider, there are several boxes I would like to return.

The new Samsung SH100 digital camera is being introduced at CES 2011. It has 14x mega pixels with a 5x optical zoom and digital stabilization. There is a 3 inch LCD screen. Smart Access UI allows the user to control a range of camera features including the ability to click and flip through photos right from the LCD screen. You can quickly upload photos to your favorite photo site, such as Facebook, Picasa, Photobucket among others wirelessly from the camera.. An optional account with the mobile hotspot provider Boingo is available allowing the upload of larger files. Boingo has over 200,000 hotspots worldwide.

If you have an Android Powered Galaxy S smart phone you can connect the SH100 with the phone and view what you are shooting in real-time on the phone. This means you can hold the camera at any angle even over your head and still see what you shooting at in realtime on your phone. You can also set the camera up on a tripod and control the shutter from your phone. No more running back and forth from the camera to those you are taking pictures of. You can also use your phone to upload the GPS information on to the photo. As long as you are on the same network you can get your photos from your camera on to your computer wirelessly with just the push of two buttons. This is true even if the computer is turned off the feature is compatible with most computer’s Wake on Lan system. You can even send the pictures from the camera to your HDTV wirelessly using DLNA. You can also use it to take videos that can be upload to YouTube straight from the camera. At $199 it is affordable and a great purchase or gift for a young person who wants to be connected with their friends no matter where they are. It will be available in March 2011. The SH100 provides the instant satisfaction of a smart phone with the picture-taking capability of a stand alone camera.

Samsung Electronics Co., LTD is introducing the HMX-Q10 camcorder at CES 2011. The idea behind the HMX-Q10 camcorder is too make recording movies as easy as possible, with the use of ground-breaking technology and smart features. This allows the consumer to record high quality videos with little effort. The HMX-Q10 is compact, easy-to use and affordable.

The first thing that you will notice when you turn on the HMX-Q10 is the Switch Grip. The Switch Grip allows the user to hold the camcorder any way they want and the G-magnetic sensor inside the camcorder turns the LCD display so it can be read at any angle. Easy Operation means that the user controls even the most detailed process through the LCD display including turning the camcorder on and off and operating the playback function. The HMX-Q10 is not only a great camcorder but it also doubles as a 4.9 Megapixel still camera. This means there is no need to carry a separate still camera.

Seoul-based Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a Solid State Disk (SSD) with a capacity of up to 16GB. Using two NAND-based modules, the SSD is a low power, lightweight storage media for notebook PCs and, eventually, consumer electronic devices.

The SSD has uses only five percent of the electricity required to power hard disk drives, and weights less than half of a comparably-sized disk drive. Because the SSD has no moving parts, there almost no noise or heat is emitted by the module, and it is less prone to skipping or damage from movement.

The SSD has read/write speeds of 57/32 MBps, respectively, making it fast enough for both computer and consumer electronics applications.

Dave’s Opinion
SSD modules with greater capacity are expected soon, making the memory product a serious competitor for micro-data devices. Look for the Samsung SSD, not only as USB flash memory key, but also as a replacement for portable digital music hard disks and, eventually, notebook hard disks.
