Toshiba was recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas showing off their new Excite X10 tablet.  The X10 is impressive upon first view because it is currently the world’s thinnest tablet at just 7.7 millimeters.  Toshiba senior product manager Duke Dang explains that using magnesium and a bonding method between the touch panel and LCD  helped them achieve this.

The tablet features a micro SD slot, micro HDMI port, a micro USB port, headphones jack, a 2 MP front-facing camera, a 5 MP rear-facing camera, and Corning Gorilla Glass.  One unique software feature that Toshiba has introduced is a file manager, which gives the Excite X10 more of a PC feel with the ability to create folders and move files around.  They have also added a screen rotation lock button to the side of the tablet.

The Toshiba Excite X10 is running Android 3.0, also known as Honeycomb, and should be available very soon – they are looking at first quarter 2012 release.  There is not yet a price available.  For more info you can visit Toshiba and also check out the video below.

Todd and Steve Lee (from Waves Of Tech) talk about seeing the 3D TV’s at the Toshiba booth at CES 2012. The one that impressed them the most was Toshiba’s 55inch 4k tv which will ship sometime in “early 2012″ and cost somewhat less then $10,000. I personally don’t know how much I would use the 3D on the set, but I would LOVE the 4K. Now to get more 4K content. Anyone have a Red camera I could borrow?

Toshiba MKxx61GSYG

Toshiba created a new drive with an interesting security feature: If it gets placed in another system, the drive erases everything.

It’s called the Toshiba SED (Self Encrypting Drive). It’s a 2.5 inch, 7200 RPM drive in sizes up to 640 GB. The drive has a AES-256 encryption and Opal Security Subsystem Class (Opal SSC). But it has even another feature. One that can erase the drive.

It’s a setting you can choose. If the drive gets taken out of the selected device and put in another to read the data, the drive can be set to delete all it’s information. You can also choose to only “deny” access, but what fun would that be?

There is a hybrid mode, too. You can choose certain areas of the disk to be wiped. Therefore, not all data could be lost. I suppose you could have a folder on the drive that opens to a video of Dennis Nedry saying “unh-unh-uh, you didn’t say the magic word” (Jurassic Park reference)…

This drive is meant for higher-end systems and high security computers. Point-of-Sales machines would benefit from this drive if certain data gets stored. Client and service kiosks as well.

While the standard computer user doesn’t need this level of security, it would be great if you have documents that you don’t want people to see. Just remember: if you set it, then try to change the drive, you loose it all.

Of course, to use the drive, you will need to have a computer that supports it. You would also have software that would control the encryption. That way if you want to safely move it to another computer, you can change the settings to move it, move the drive and reset the protocol.

Great for higher security computers. Bad if you forget the function is there in the drive…

3D TV is great in theory except for one thing the glasses. The glasses are often bulky, expensive and lets face it most people don’t want to wear them. The dream scenario is glass free 3D TV.  Toshiba is attempting to creating such a TV using lenticular sheets of magnified lenses. At CES 2011

Tom Newman visited the Toshiba booth and a took at the Toshiba 3D glass free TV.   According to both his and other reviews, it is definitely a 1.0 product and is not ready for prime time. The picture is pixellated and lacks stabilization. The viewing angle is only 40 degrees, 20 degrees on both sides. There are 2 screens the 20″ which can be viewed up to 3 feet away and the 12″ which can be viewed up to 2 feet.

It also cost a lot of money, expected price for the 12 inch is $1400 and the 20″ is $2800, Samsung is offering a traditional 50 inch 3D with glasses at $990 according to PCW.   At this point those of us in the U.S. don’t have to worry about the price since it is coming out in Japan first and there is no release date for the U.S. Most people don’t expect glass free 3D TV to be ready for the public until 2015 at the earliest.

Todd casts his eye over Toshiba‘s upcoming Windows 7 tablet, with a larger than usual screen at 11.6″, Atom processor and dual cameras. Being very early to the booth, there was no one readily available to talk to, but as you can see from the video, the Toshiba tablet appears to be a prototype. The jury’s still out on the oversize screen on this one, but there were tablet designs for every possible configuration and use.
